CHAPTER EIGHT
WRITTEN TRAGEDY
"Have you even talked to Bonnie?" I asked Caroline, as we walked passed a parked school bus. Books were clutched to my chest as I looked over to her.
"No, I'm mad at her. She needs to make the first move." Caroline replied.
"Be the bigger person." I said suggestively.
She scoffed. "Ugh, impossible in her presence." Caroline said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"Why are you so pissed at her anyway?"
"She's a thief, that's why!" Caroline exclaimed, flailing her arms around her. I shot her a look to explain. "I gave her my necklace and she refuses to give it back. It's a matter of principle."
"All right, I tried. I'm officially out of it," I said, adjusting the strap on my shoulder.
"Good," Caroline replied, grinning triumphantly. "Your turn. Where's Stefan and Elena? Have you talked to them?"
"They're avoiding me." I stated nonchalantly, not really wanting to delve into that specific subject.
"Why?" she pushed, and I groaned quietly. Of course she couldn't let it go.
"It's complicated, I guess - hard to explain." I muttered.
Caroline opened her mouth to ask another question when the bell abruptly rang. "I'll see you later," I told my blonde friend.
She awkwardly waved. "Bye."
I trudged into history, and immediately noticed that Stefan's seat was unoccupied. I lowered myself into my desk and set my textbooks atop of the wooden desk. I let out a long shaky breath through my nose, trying my hardest to forget about last night, but I just couldn't. I slumped back in my seat, rolling my eyes at my ineffective efforts.
Stefan not being in class caused my mind to wonder. I mean, so many possibilities popped in my head at once. Did he kill Damon? Did Damon kill him? Had they skipped town and left Elena and I without an explanation?
My thoughts were interrupted when a tall and attractive man entered the classroom. His light brown hair was neatly combed back and his pale blue eyes were shining with enthusiasm. He also had a pale complexion that was complemented with slight stubble on his chin, jaw and cheeks.
I tilted my head at the man, was he our new history teacher?
"Alrighty," the man said, removing his jacket and making his way to the blackboard. He grabbed a piece of white chalk and began writing.
My undivided attention on the man was disrupted when I noticed Elena was looking over at a distraught looking Bonnie. Elena was mouthing to Bonnie: "Are you okay?" and Bonnie just shook her head in response.
"Alaric Saltzman." The man said, pointing to the board, where his name was written. "It's a mouthful, I know. It doesn't exactly roll of the tongue. But, Saltzman is of German origins. My family immigrated here in 1755 to Texas." Alaric said, taking a pause, "I however was born and raised in Boston. The name Alaric belongs to very old, dead great grandfather, that I will never be able to thank enough. You're going to want to pronounce it AL-A-RIC but it's A-LAR-IC. Okay, so you can all call me Ric. I'm your new history teacher."
Alaric started his lesson for the day and it was actually interesting to listen to. He made it enjoyable and didn't get mad if you didn't know the answer to his question. I even opened my textbook to follow along. When the bell rang and everyone was walking out of class, I went up to his desk.
"Hello." He smiled.
I smiled back. "Hi, Mister Saltzman, I'm Elektra Gilbert. I just wanted to introduce myself and say that I enjoyed your class today."
"Well, thank you, I appreciate it."
"No problem. I'll see you tomorrow." I grinned and left his room to meet with Elena and Bonnie who were both waiting for me. Bonnie was explaining her dreams to Elena, so I only caught up to what they were in the middle of saying.
"And then, I ended up at the remains of the old Fell's church before I woke up back in the woods." Bonnie finished as we began to walk together.
"And you always see your ancestor Emily?" Elena arched a brow.
"Huh," I muttered, shoulders slumping at the subject.
"Mm-hmm. Do you believe in ghosts?" Bonnie suddenly asked us.
Elena nodded without hesitation. I pursed my lips at the question. "Two weeks ago I'd say no, but now..."
"Because I think I'm being haunted." Bonnie informed.
"I don't get it. Why Emily?" I asked.
"Grams said she was a powerful witch back in the Civil War days, and that this medallion was hers. A witch's talisman." Bonnie explained.
"And it all started when you got the necklace?" Elena furrowed her brows.
"I think she's using it to communicate with me." Bonnie pondered the subject.
"Okay, what does Grams say about it?"
"I can't call her." Bonnie denied. "She's going to tell me to embrace it. I don't want to embrace it, I want it to stop."
I stopped us in our tracks and faced Bonnie. "Bonnie, this is getting serious. You have to talk to her."
"I don't want to." She pouted.
I sighed, deciding not to argue with her and then we continued walking. We went to our lockers to get our books and went our separate ways to class.
Ever since our conversation with Bonnie, Elena had been ignoring me--I felt a sort of pang course through me at the thought of her being mad at me. It's a twin thing, don't read into it.
After class I ran after Elena. "Elena!" I called running down the hall. She ignored me and kept walking. "Elena! Wait!" I yelled again. This time she stopped.
"What?" she asked annoyed.
"Why are you avoiding me? Did I do something wrong?" I asked faking a pout. It always worked.
"No. Elektra, I'm sorry." She said and pulled me into a hug. I smirked over her shoulder. "Nice job faking, I'm not stupid." She said in my ear giggling. I gasped and pulled away.
"I can't believe you thought I was faking!" I said crossing my arms. She rolled her eyes, as we walked outside.
Elena stopped, which confused me. I followed her gaze to see what she was staring at and saw, Stefan. She took a deep breath and grabbed my hand pulling me towards him. Even though I didn't want to. I groaned and walked alongside her.
"Hi," Stefan greeted, standing from the picnic table he was perched upon.
"You weren't in class, we were worried." Elena replied, placing her hands on her hips.
"Yeah, I got your messages and I'm sorry I didn't get back to you, but what I wanted to say shouldn't be said over the phone."
"A simple, 'I didn't kill my brother' text would have sufficed." I quipped, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
"I didn't kill my brother, as much as he deserved it. He has Elektra to thank for that," he told us, staring down at me.
"So, what did you want to tell us?" Elena asked, rocking on her toes.
"I won't be coming to school anymore. I'm going to back off and keep my distance. It's the right thing to do." Stefan answered quietly, trying to avoid mine and Elena's gaze.
"Back off from school? Or from us?"
Stefan didn't answer my question.
"Alright, thank you for telling us." I snorted, my voice breaking. I looked at Elena's eyes, to see them glazed over.
"It's better this way." Stefan said.
"Yep, I got it." I responded solemnly.
"You're both angry. That's good, it will be easier if you two hate me." Stefan said, and then turned his back to us as he walked away. I glared into his back.
✥ ✥ ✥
"Elena?" I called.
"We're in the kitchen." Elena said.
I put on a smile and walking into the kitchen, Bonnie, Caroline, and Elena were all standing around together. Bonnie and Caroline were exchanging looks, while Elena looked at me for help to resolve our friends fight.
I gave Caroline a glare that said: 'Apologize-Now-Or-I-Will-Kick-Your-Ass.' Her eyes widened a little and then she turned to Bonnie.
"I'm sorry, Bonnie. There, I said it." Caroline said in an annoyed rushed tone. She looked over to me and smirked, as if to say 'you happy now?' "If you want the ugly ass necklace, then keep it. It's yours." Caroline continued, turning back to Bonnie. I looked over to Elena to see her shaking her head with disappointment.
"Will you hate me if I tell you I threw it away?" Bonnie asked Caroline. I groaned mentally and palmed my forehead.
"You threw it away?!" Caroline exclaimed outraged.
"I know it sounds crazy, but the necklace gave me nightmares, I had to get rid of it." Bonnie stated.
"You could have just gave it to me!" Caroline yelled, anger rising. I looked to Elena, she looked as helpless as I felt.
"Why, so you could give it back to Damon?" Elena asked smirking. I let out a long breath.
"Screw Damon. Are we doing manicures or what? Who has their kit?" Caroline asked, changing the subject.
"Mine's in my bag." Bonnie stated.
Caroline nodded and walked over to it and began to rummage through Bonnie's bag; searching for it. "So, Elena, how long do you think this fight with Stefan will last? Is it a permanent thing?" Caroline asked.
"I don't know, Caroline." Elena breathed out, annoyance written all over her face.
"Why are you such a littler liar, Bonnie?" Caroline asked angrily from the other room.
"What?" Bonnie asked, whirling around to face Caroline.
"Caroline," I scolded.
I turned to look at Caroline, to see her holding the necklace that I remember Bonnie throwing into the field. I looked to see Bonnie and Elena staring at each other with the same shocked expression.
What the hell?
"I'm not lying to you, Caroline."
Bonnie stated. "I swear."
"It's true. I watched her throw it into the field." Elena said, I nodded in agreement.
"Then explain it." Caroline said coldly. I looked to Bonnie and Elena for help.
"Emily." Bonnie said looking over to Elena and I.
"Who's Emily?" Caroline asked totally confused.
"The ghost," Bonnie said, looking around us all.
"Oh, the ghost has a name now." Caroline muttered sarcastically.
"Shut up, Caroline." I growled, holding my hand up to shut her up. She huffed.
"Why won't she leave me alone?" Bonnie's eyes were wide as she glanced between Elena and I several times.
"What is going on? Why am I not a part of this conversation? You guys do this to me all the time." Caroline raised her voice; obviously not pleased by Elena, Bonnie, and I not including her.
"That's not true." Elena said.
"Yes, it is." I corrected her.
"I can't talk to you, you don't listen." Bonnie said to Caroline.
"That's not true." Caroline yelled outraged. I knew that deep down, she knew it was true.
"I'm a witch." Bonnie said truthfully.
"And don't we all know it." Caroline retorted.
"See? That's what I'm talking about, I'm trying to tell you something! And you don't even hear it." Bonnie then stormed out of the room.
I looked over to Caroline and saw guilt in her eyes. I knew those words really did hurt her.
"I listen." Caroline said turning back to Elena and I. "When do I not listen?"
Elena cleaned off the table and I turned around and sipped on my water. Caroline crossed her arms as she stood next to me.
"Seriously guys, when do I not listen?" Caroline pressed. We kind of stood there not saying anything. "Elektra, I know you have something to say."
I sighed, "Caroline..."
"No, out with it." She urged.
"When someone says something to you, you do kind of shut it out. It's like if it's something you wouldn't be interested in, you just tune it out and only tune back in when it's something of your interest."
"That's not true." Caroline quickly denied, "I mean, I'm best friends with you."
"That's true, but Caroline; we're only best friends because we grew up together. We learned to love each other and be best friends and you're best friends with my sister and Bonnie."
Caroline looked a little hurt. "I didn't realize it was that way."
"It's whatever. The point is you should hear Bonnie out. You don't want to lose her." I nodded towards the living room.
Caroline nodded and went into the living room.
Elena looked up at me, "That was something."
"Yeah," I replied.
Bonnie was sitting on the couch, moping. I looked to Caroline, she nodded. She walked further into the room, where Bonnie was. Elena and I stood in the kitchen listening.
"Bonnie? Look, it's just not me. Okay? I don't believe in the "woo, woo." But if you do then, okay, I'm in. That's all it takes for me to jump onboard. Because I consider you to be my best friend. And I'm saying this knowing that Elena and Elektra are in the kitchen listening to my every word." Caroline paused to take a deep breath before continuing: "Look, I didn't know how real this was for you. But I'm listening now. Okay?" Caroline finished.
"Okay," Bonnie whispered back.
"Elena! Elektra! You can come in now! We're done!" she yelled, Elena and I smiled, and walked into the room.
"Well, there is just way too much drama in this room." Caroline complained, allowing her hand to fall back against the couch. "So, what do you guys want to do? Huh! I have an idea. Why don't we have a séance?"
"Uh...," I groaned, shaking my head at the idea.
"I don't think that's a good idea." Bonnie said.
"Come on." Caroline urged, standing from the couch. "Let's summon some spirits. This Emily chick has some serious explaining to do."
The three of us reluctantly agreed to Caroline's plan and we went to search for candles. Once we thought we had enough we arranged them on the floor in my room and lit them. Caroline turned off the lights before we all sat in a circle and held hands.
"What are we doing?" Bonnie asked.
"I don't know." I replied annoyed. Elena let out a huge sigh.
"Shh!" Caroline shushed me before glaring at the three of us. "Be quiet and concentrate. Okay, close your eyes." She instructed. "Okay, now take a deep breath. Bonnie, call to her." she finished. I could already feel my heartbeat speed up in my chest.
"Emily. You there?" Bonnie said in monotone.
My eyes snapped open.
"Really? "Emily, you there?" That's all you got?" Caroline asked.
"Fine, jeez," Bonnie murmured, and we all composed ourselves and began again. "Emily. I call on you. I know you have a message. I'm here to listen." She said slowly and seriously. I took in a deep breath to try and calm my nerves.
After a moment of dreadful silence, the flames on the candles flared up drastically. The four of us all retracted our hands and scooted away from the burning wax cylinders in front of us. My heart felt like it had leapt into my throat as I stared at the flames intently.
"Did that just-?"
"Yeah, that just happened." Caroline confirmed my unvoiced question. All of a sudden, a chilling shiver coursed through my body. I crossed my arms over my chest and rubbed my hands up and down the sides of my arms.
Bonnie noticed my reaction to the chill and quickly said: "It's just the air conditioning."
"Ask her to show you a sign." Caroline said. Bonnie silently shook her head. "Ask her. Emily, if you're among us, show us another sign."
"See, it's not working." Bonnie said sounding like she was trying to convince herself more than us.
The windows flew open and hit the wall with a bang! I screamed and so did everyone else. I could sense everyone's panic, including my own.
"I can't! I'm done!" Bonnie said ripping the necklace off of her neck, and throwing on the ground in front of the candles. She stood up, her eyes wide. The candles then blew out, leaving us in darkness. "Get the light on! Please get the light on!" Bonnie yelled.
"I got it." Elena said turning the light on.
"You guys, the necklace is gone." Bonnie said staring down at the candles. I looked over and saw she was right. It wasn't there.
We all stood in shock before Elena spoke up. "Okay, fun's over Caroline. You made your point and I get it, now give it back."
"I didn't take it!" Caroline protested, crossing her arms over her chest.
I looked over to the hallway, and saw a dark figure walk past. "Jeremy, are you home?" I asked walking over to the doorway. I got to the doorway and looked in the hall. I saw no one, not a thing. Elena was behind me, I slipped past her and back in her room.
I saw Bonnie walking slowly towards the bathroom. "Um, guys?" Bonnie said, as she walked into the bathroom. She bent down and picked something up. She was about to walk back out when the door shut. I ran to the door to hear Bonnie screaming.
"Bonnie!" I yelled, pounding on the door. We were trying to yank it open but it wouldn't budge.
"I'll check the hallway." Elena said running. Then the lights started to flicker. I looked over to Caroline, we stopped trying to open the door for a moment.
Elena ran back to our door with us. My heart was pounding as Bonnie's screams continued, and then they suddenly stopped. I opened the door immediately, and there was Bonnie in the middle of the bathroom standing. Her hands we clutching the sides of her head desperately, her breathing was heavy and unsteady.
All three of us walked in the bathroom slowly. "What happened? Are you okay?" Elena demanded. Bonnie slowly looked up.
She unclutched her head and looked at us. "I'm fine." Bonnie said in an emotionless voice.
"Oh, my God, you were faking it this whole time." Caroline yelled, outraged.
"Caroline, come on." I scorned.
"No, you scared the hell out of me!" Caroline shouted and then walked away from the bathroom.
"Bonnie?" Elena asked gently.
"I'm fine. Everything's fine." Bonnie said blankly. If I didn't know any better. I would say she was possessed.
When Bonnie walked past the bathroom mirror, her reflection wasn't her own.
"I can't believe I fell for it." Caroline shouted in irritation.
"I must go." Bonnie replied simply.
"If she's leaving, I'm leaving." Caroline announced.
"You can't leave." Elena protested, my eyes flashed to Bonnie, she was making her way towards the stairs.
"The hell I can." Caroline replied. "I've had enough freaky-fake-witch stuff for one night."
"Thank you for having me." Bonnie said all too politely. "I'll take it from here." She continued as she walked down the stairs.
"Where are you going?" I asked her.
"Back to where it all began," She replied, as she walked slowly down the stairs.
"Bonnie." Elena called, but Bonnie ignored her. "Bonnie!" she called again, as Elena and I started down the stairs after her.
"Oh, my God," I said quietly. So called 'Bonnie' had just proven my thoughts right. "Emily!" I yelled.
When she heard that name she turned and faced me. "I won't let him have it. It must be destroyed."
"Wait!"
We chased her down the stairs and she shut the door behind her. Elena tried to open it but it wouldn't open. I wrapped my arms around her stomach and helped her tug on the door again.
"What's happening?" Caroline cried out.
"I don't know. The door, it's not..." I started to say before the door opened and Elena and I went stumbling backwards. I landed on my back and Elena landed on top of me and I grunted in pain.
"What the hell?" Jeremy said looking at us in confusion before brushing it off and going up the stairs.
"I'm outta here." Caroline shook her head and ran out the door.
"Call Stefan." I commanded.
I was out the door before Elena even got off the phone. I took my car and drove to Fell's Church. I had been putting two and two together, since Bonnie had told us that in her nightmares Emily always brought Bonnie to the remains of Fell's Church.
I stopped a little ways from Stefan, Damon, and Emily. We were all in the woods, I was peeking around a tree.
"Stefan." Emily said.
"Hello, Emily." Stefan replied.
"These people don't deserve this. They don't deserve to know such evil." Emily said.
"What do you mean evil?" Stefan asked but was interrupted by Damon.
"Emily, I swear to god I'll make you regret this." Damon said standing up slowly.
"I won't release them into this world." Emily said.
"Them?" Stefan asked. He then turned back to Damon. "What part of the story did you leave out, Damon?"
"What does it matter?" Damon asked, grunting in pain.
"Emily, tell me what you did." Stefan demanded.
"To save Katherine and Beatrice, I had to save them." Emily responded.
"You saved everyone in the church?" Stefan asked.
"With both, comes all." Emily concluded. Wait, so when Damon told me the story of the people burning in the church, they were vampires?
"I don't care about them. I just want Katherine and Beatrice." Damon said pleadingly.
"Why should I believe a single word that comes out of your mouth? This isn't about love, is it? This is about revenge." Stefan stated, holding Damon's shoulders, so he couldn't push past him.
"The two aren't mutually exclusive," Damon muttered.
"Damon, you can't do this." Stefan retorted, tightening his grip on Damon's shoulders.
"Why not?" Damon growled, slamming his palms against Stefan's chest. "They killed twenty-seven people and they called it a war battle. They deserve whatever they get."
"Twenty-seven vampires, Damon. They were vampires. You can't just bring them back."
Damon placed his hands on the sides of Stefan's neck before whispering: "This town deserves this."
"You're blaming innocent people for something that happened one-hundred and forty-five years ago."
"There is nothing innocent about these people." Damon shouted and slapping Stefan's hands away. "And don't think for a second it won't happen again. They already know too much." Damon said, before looking over Stefan's shoulder at Emily. "And they'll burn your little Grand-Witch right next to us when they find out. Trust me."
"Things are different now," Emily replied.
"Don't do this," Damon pleaded, shaking his head.
"I can't free them...I won't." Emily said. "Incendia." Emily said, and then fire grew around her. I gasped.
"No!"
Emily threw the necklace into the air, it soared into the air until it was destroyed by an explosion. The fire then died down and Bonnie's head snapped down to look at her feet.
Bonnie looked back up, with a confused look on her face. She was back to normal, Emily was gone. Damon took this opportunity and ran at her growling, Bonnie screamed as he bit down on her neck. I finally came to my senses and ran to her.
Stefan threw Damon off of her. And Bonnie collapsed to the ground. Stefan put his head on Bonnie's chest listening for a heartbeat. "She's alive, but barely." Stefan said. "I can save her." Stefan then bit his wrist and brought it to Bonnie's mouth.
"Her neck, it's healing." Elena breathed out, her voice breaking. I looked over to Bonnie's neck to see it almost healed with dried blood around it.
✥ ✥ ✥
"I don't understand, Elektra. What happened to me? He attacked me and his face was like..." Bonnie rambled, tears streaked her cheeks.
I nodded sympathetically. "I know, Bonnie. How do you feel? Are you okay?" I asked, moving her hair away from her neck.
"I'm fine," she mumbled, bringing her hand up to touch her healed neck. "It's just the blood, I don't -"
Bonnie stopped midsentence and her face suddenly became pale. I followed her gaze, I glanced over my shoulder to see that she was staring at Stefan.
"I'm not going to hurt you," Stefan assured Bonnie. She nodded slowly, unsure. I couldn't blame her for being scared of him.
"What's going on, Elektra?" Bonnie demanded, yanking her hands out of my grasp.
"I'll explain everything, Bonnie, okay? Let's just get out of here." I replied softly. She nodded slightly and then glanced over my shoulder at Stefan. "Bonnie. Bonnie, look at me. Trust me, he's not going to hurt you." I said before looking over at Elena. "I'll take her back to the house. I'm sure you want to talk to Stefan."
Dear Diary,
I felt a pain in my chest. It hurt so bad. Once Elena got home she came up to my room, where Bonnie and I were sitting on my bed. Elena and I explained the vampire thing to Bonnie. She seemed so scared. But as we were talking and bawling our eyes out, I noticed something was wrong with Elena so I asked. Turns out Stefan and Damon are leaving town.
