08 - no confession
The static of Negans walkie-talkie caught his and Simons attention. The drove down the empty roads towards an entrance to the forest that was twenty minutes from their last stop. They would go into the forest to try and see if they could find any evidence of River camping out with her group. She was keeping her group well hidden and he could tell, because none of his men had a run in with her, and if they did they never made it back.
Negan looked down to the walkie-talkie in his hand confused. "Dwight that you?" He asked holding down the button before releasing it waiting for a response. The first thing he heard was a laugh, one that was all too familiar to him, "Damn," he heard followed by a sigh. "It's good to hear your voice old friend," he ran his hand over his face and told Simon to pull over. He jumped out of the truck telling Simon to stay put, he slammed the truck door shut and pressed the button on the walkie-talkie.
"River Montgomery," he said with a sigh running his hand over his face and through his hair tugging on the ends. "So, you read the letters," She said, he couldn't see her but he knew she was smirking. "Someone's killing my men, I'm sure you would get a little curious too," he replied leaning against the side of the truck. "You always were a curious man," River said, Negan groaned and hit his head against the truck softly. "River what do you want from me?" He asked into the walkie-talkie. He heard her chuckle before she said, "I want to meet up Negan, just you and me. We have some things we need to talk about. Read the next letter, you'll know where. Meet me there tomorrow around noon, don't keep me waiting," she said before he was met with the sound of static once more.
Negan looked down to the object in his hand wondering if the conversation he had was even real. Negan opened the truck door once more and turned to Simon, "Go back to the Sanctuary, the search is off," he said, Simon opened his mouth to protest but Negan sent him a glare. With a nod, Simon turned the truck around and headed back in the direction of the Sanctuary. Negan turned the dial on his walkie-talkie, so all the groups could hear him, "Search is off, everyone head back now," He said making it brief.
Negan reached for the next letter in the shrinking pile and tore it open.
'negan,
this isn't a confession, this is simply a letter from one friend to another; a letter of advice.
meet me at the old farm house 15 miles from the sanctuary on burke road, and come alone. don't try to bring anyone with you, you have no need to I wouldn't ever try to kill you.
don't keep me waiting there's a lot we need to talk about, in person. also, do me a favour and read the last two letters before you come, it will help you understand everything.
-river montgomery'
Negan looked at the letter after he finished, it made no sense, there was no taunting; no teasing. He flipped it over to see if it was some kind of gag but there was nothing. No 'unit next time' or 'xoxo' which confused him. What were the last two confessions going to be?
Why did they need to talk about everything else in person? What was so bad that they had to meet alone?
