Skyler's father stood in front of me with a grim look on his face.
Suddenly, there was a blast from the past in front of my eyes. I remember opening the door for him like this, and he assumed that I was Skyler's maid. I still remember our last encounter, when he called me to meet him for lunch. I have been out of Skyler's life for the past four years, and now I feel the same nervousness and anxiety I felt that day. My heart kept beating fast. I don't know what will happen next. He still had that mad expression on his face.
"Won't you ask me to come inside?" he asked with raised brows, pulling me out of my thoughts. I took a deep breath and swallowed hard.
"Yeah, please come inside," I said nervously with a faint smile on my face. I moved away from the door, letting him come inside. I looked at the door and trailed behind him with small steps. He didn't seem surprised when I opened the door for him. His face held an expression that indicated he knew I was here. Then what does he know about Neil? Is he here because of it? What if he doesn't know anything about him? I don't know how he will react after learning about his grandson. What if he doesn't accept him into the family? That question scared me. So many questions appeared in my mind, but I kept my mouth shut and kept following him like a lost puppy. It's the only thing I can do now. Soon we reached the living room, where Skyler was playing with Neil.
"Hazel, who is at the door?" Skyler asked without looking up. He was still busy playing with our son. His dad cleared his throat before I could say anything. He lifted his head and looked at his father.
"Dad," he said while standing up. His face had a surprised look on it. His father's eyes moved from Skyler to Neil, who was still in his arms. I saw how his eyes became soft when he looked at him.
"Come sit," he said, immediately gesturing towards the couch.
"Let me make one thing clear: I'm here to meet my grandson," his father said while looking at Neil. I looked up to find Skyler already looking at me. His eyes were filled with unknown emotions. I just nodded my head, not knowing what I should do. His father seemed mad at both of us, and I didn't want to worsen the situation.
"Look what I have brought for you," he said, looking at Neil, who hid his face in Skyler's neck. He was shy. That's when I noticed Skyler's father had bags in his hands that had toys in them. Skyler cleared his throat.
"Neil, baby, see. Your granddad is here to meet you. He has even brought toys for you," Skyler said, trying to make him look at his father. Neil peeked a little at his grandfather when he heard about toys. Mr. Addam smiled at him, and it made Neil hide his face back into the crook of his father's neck. Skyler pursued him again, but he still refused to look at his grandfather.
"I even have chocolates with me," Mr. Addam said with a soft smile on his face when he saw how Neil was refusing to meet him.
"Chocolate," Neil whispered while looking at Mr. Addam with his big forest-green eyes.
"Yes, chocolates," Mr. Addam said, showing him chocolates. His eyes brightened when he saw them. He immediately got down from his father's arm and walked to his grandfather, showing him his tiny hand. Mr. Addam chuckled, looking at him. He gave him the chocolate and lifted him in his arms before he could run away.
"Like father, like son," I heard him chuckle while lifting him.
"Are these all chocolates for me?" Neil asked in his baby voice while eyeing the bag of different kinds of chocolates.
"Hmm, only if you give a kiss to your granddad," Mr. Addams said with a smile on his face. Neil's eyes sparkled, and he didn't waste time and kissed Mr. Addams's cheeks. It made him smile with a full heart. This boy could do anything for chocolate. One second ago, he was shy in front of his grandfather, and the next second, he was kissing him. Skyler and I stood there watching them with a smile on our faces. Skyler still had those emotions swirling in his eyes.
"I will get water for you," Skyler announced, walking towards the kitchen. I silently followed him. I found him filling the glass with water.
"Are you ok?" I asked him once I was inside the kitchen. He cleared his throat before answering me.
"Yes," he said, trying to sound normal. He gave me a small smile. I smiled back, not wanting to budge him more. I could see something was going on in his mind, but he didn't want to share, and I couldn't force him. I will give him time and wait until he is ready to share it with me.
"Let's go," he said, and I nodded my head. He walked out of the kitchen with a glass of water, and I followed him. Both the grandson and grandfather were busy playing. Me Addam was showing him all the new toys, and Neil was escalating to see so many new toys. Skyler offered him the glass of water, but he didn't accept it.
"Hazel," he called my name, suddenly making me flinch in my place.
"Yeah," I stuttered because of his suddenly taking my name.
"Can I get a glass of water, and if you don't mind, a cup of coffee too?" he said while looking at me.
"Yes, sure," I said with a nod. He gave me a soft smile and went back to talk with Neil. My eyes moved to Skyler, and he had a hurt look on his face. He sat in the corner, looking at them. I walked to the kitchen and brought a glass of water and then coffee. Mr. Addam asked me how I was. I replied positively. Mr. Addam spent his whole time here with Neil. Neil even told him his birthday was coming soon. Skyler didn't say anything the entire time. He just kept looking at us. I insisted he stay for dinner with us, but he refused to stay. He will join us next time. After Mr. Addam left, Skyler still didn't say anything. We had our dinner in silence. I kept looking at him, but he kept his emotions masked. He took Neil to bed after dinner, and I decided to clean the kitchen before going to bed. I was done with my work in fifteen minutes. When I opened the door of the bedroom, I found them sleeping. Skyler had left space in between them for me. I changed my clothes and lay between them. I turned around to face Skyler, who had his eyes closed. I could tell he was pretending to be asleep.
"Skyler," I whispered his name while moving my palm on his face, and that's what it took for him to move forward and snuggle his face in my chest. His hands wrapped around me as if I would run away. His body shuddered a bit. I kissed his head and moved my hands on his back in soothing circles. I won't ask him anything.
I was again giving him time.
