"I dare you to stop me."
He started walking away, saying that. My whole body shook in fear of getting separated from my child. I breathe every day just for him. He is my life. He is mine. I can't let that happen. I saw him walking inside with long strides. My heart trumpeted loudly behind my rib cage. Tears of helplessness fell from my eyes.
"You can't do it," I stuttered in fear while running behind him. My heart was beating so loudly in fear that I could hear it drumming in my ear.
"Watch me," he said in the same determined tone without looking at me. He walked inside.
"Dwayne, call Michele and ask him to send me the custody papers I asked him for immediately," Skyler said in a firm tone while walking towards Neil.
"Yes, boss, I will do it," his bodyguard said obediently. My breath hitched when I heard that.
"What paper? I will not let you take my child from me," I announced with angry tears running down my face. I very well know how much power he has. What will I do if he takes my Neil from me?
I will die.
"Hazel, what's happening here?" my mother said, looking at my devastated state. He was about to lift him into his arms. But before he could, I ran towards Neil and took him out of his hold. I hugged him, hiding his face in my neck. Not letting him take him.
"Mom, tell him that he is my child. He can't take him away from me," I cried out loud while moving my head in denial. I hugged my son tightly.
"Mama is crying," he said, and he started to cry, looking at my crying state. My heart sank upon hearing his cry. More tears slipped from my eyes.
"No one is taking him anywhere; stop crying," my mother said while moving her hand on my back as I tried to hide in her arms. Skyler was standing only a few steps away from me. He will take Neil away from me. That thought made me hug him even more tightly.
"Mama is crying," Neil again wailed, and it broke my heart.
"No, baby mama is not crying, see," I said, pulling him out of my neck while wiping my eyes and then his. Fat tears fell out of his innocent forest-green eyes as he inspected my face. I held back my tears and smiled at him. Skyler kept looking at us with a clenched jaw.
"Mama is not crying. See, friend, Mama is not crying. She is strong," he said in his baby voice while looking at Skyler. He hugged me again while hiding his face in my neck.
"What is going on here?" A nurse came with an angry face.
"Keep your voice down. It's a hospital. If you want to fight, walk out of the hospital and do it," she scolded us before walking away. I saw my brother come running into the ward. His eyes fell on me and then on Skyler, standing on the opposite side of the bed. He glared at Skyler and stood beside me like a protective brother.
"Hazel Neil's test reports have come," Allen told me. "The doctor is calling us," he said, making my heart beat in fear. Yesterday, they did an advanced level of the test. I was scared to know the result.
"Let's go," he said while putting a protective hand over my shoulder. My mother, too, followed us out, and so did Skyler. Once we reached the doctor's office, Allen took Neil from my hand. I didn't want to let him go, but I can't even take him to the doctor's office. He catches everything and then questions me innocently. It breaks my heart every time.
"Baby Mama will be back soon. Be a good boy and stay with Nano until then," I cooed when he wouldn't let go of me.
"Come soon," he said, looking at me with doe eyes. I nodded at him with a big smile on my face. He smiled back at him. I kissed his forehead before handing him to my mother. I turned to find Skyler's keen eyes fixed on me. I swallowed my tears, bringing back my strong face. I averted my eyes and walked inside.
"You can't go in," Allen tried to tell Skyler. He stood in front of the door, blocking him.
"I'm the father, so fucking move before someone does it for me," Skyler warned him.
"Allen," I called his name, which made him move away from the door. Skyler walked in while undoing his suit button. I took my seat in front of the doctor, and Skyler sat beside me. Allen stood beside me with his hand on my shoulder. Saying he is with me. I gripped his hands for a second. Dr. Ken looked at Skyler with surprised eyes. He then looked at me in question.
"Neil's father," I said dryly, and it made him nod his head in even more surprise.
"I thought you would never say that," Skyler mocked, making me curl my fingers. I still kept sitting there, taking deep breaths. I don't want to fight with him now.
"Dr. Ken," he said, forwarding his hand towards Skyler.
"Skyler Addams," he said while taking his hands
"I know. It's a pleasure meeting you. Only because of your generous donation, all the kids suffering from cancer are getting treated," he said with a genuine smile on his face.
"I must help those brave kids and their parents, who work hard for them," he said with a genuine smile on his face. I felt his eyes on me for a few seconds when he said the last part, but they moved away. Dr. Ken nodded his head positively.
"Neil's reports are here. I had noticed something different in the last test, so I wanted to confirm it again, so I did advanced testing," he said while wearing his glasses. My heart was beating so fast with each passing second. My fingers frowned at each other in fear.
"Is everything okay, doctor?" I asked, swallowing the lump of fear.
"Sorry to say, but not," he said, making my heart stop beating. He looked at both of us before putting a drawing of a human heart in front of us.
"Why, what's wrong? His last report was good," I said anxiously. My fingers froze even more with each other.
"They were, but I notice his hole has increased by a millimetre." If it keeps increasing, it will affect his lungs," he said while pointing at the heart, which had a hole in it. My eyes widened in fear, and tears started to form in them. I felt a hand covering mine. I looked at Skyler when his fingers stopped my fidgeting fingers, and intertwined our fingers.
"Doctor, what step can we take in this situation?" he asked while holding my hand firmly under the table. I swallowed hard and looked at the doctor. He removed his glasses and looked at us.
"It's a critical change, so it would be great if we performed surgery," he said to him.
"I have talked with Dr. John about it. Do you think it will help if you have this case with him?" Skyler asked in a serious tone, making me look at him with furrowed brows.
"Professor Dr. John Dean of New York Medical Hospital?" he inquired with surprised eyes. Skyler nodded his head.
"What should I say? He is the best doctor for this critical case," Dr. Ken said in his stunned tone.
"Good, then I would like you to send him all the details about my son's case. My secretary will contact you soon," Skyler said while staying up. I had to stand up too because he was still holding my hand.
"Sure, don't worry. I will brief him. He is now in trusted hands." Dr. Ken also stood up.
"Thank you, doctor, for all your support and help," I said from the bottom of my heart. He smiled at me. He thanked him before walking us out of his office. Once we were out of the office, he let go of my hand. He turned around and looked dead in my eyes.
"Pack your things. We are going to New York today itself."
