ONCE UPON A TIME, IN THE LAND OF THE ENCHANTED FOREST, THERE WAS PEACE AND PROSPERITY ALL AROUND. But then came along a certain Evil Queen who turned the entire realm upside down. Her bloodlust for Snow White's heart caused chaos throughout the realm and brought a war like no other. Many were caught in her crossfire and some paid the ultimate price so the Queen could get the revenge she desired.

A curse was cast. An evil, dark curse that ripped everyone from the Enchanted Forest and whisked them away to another land. A land where time had been frozen and their pasts forgotten. Or as they knew it: Storybrooke.

For twenty-eight years, Carlos Garcia has had no clue about who he truly was. Stuck in a daze in a town that time never touched, Storybrooke's local thief stole from the rich to give to the poor, in a manner of speaking. The nunnery and school reaped the profits of his dangerous endeavours. After all, Carlos only stole to survive, so anything he didn't need he gave to those who did.

He was the best thief in all of Storybrooke but one day he let his ambition get the better of him and paid dearly for it.

Trying to steal from the Mayor was one of the dumbest things he had ever done in his life, and there were a lot of those to choose from. Caught red-handed with his slippery fingers amongst jewellery he knew she wouldn't miss, Carlos found himself in the hottest waters he had ever been in. All she had to do was call the Sheriff and report him, and he knew she had him on speed-dial. But, for a reason he couldn't understand at the time, she did not.

It soon became apparent that he hadn't gotten away scot free as he had previously thought, for the very next day he was called into her office where she made his position perfectly clear. He either work for her or be sent to the slammer. If he had to pick one, the lesser of two evils, he would have to choose the former. And that's what he did.

Carlos Garcia didn't particularly like being under the Mayor's thumb but there was nothing he could about it. She had twisted her way into his life and controlled him like a puppet on a string all because of one stupid mistake he could never take back. Now he must be at her beck and call or suffer the consequences even if it means doing something he really didn't want to do.

But then a mysterious blonde by the name of Emma Swan rolls into town in her yellow bug who only happened to be the birth mother of the very boy the Mayor had adopted a decade ago. Put on edge by her arrival, Regina started to rely on Carlos' services even more than before, desperate to drive the woman out of town and away from her son. And despite the nagging feeling in his heart, Carlos obeyed her wishes.

Because the Evil Queen had Puss in Boots by his furry little tail and there was not a single thing he could do to escape. But despite everything she had done to both him and Storybrooke, Carlos managed to see the good hiding away inside her heart and he was determined to bring it out.

Welcome to this book! I absolutely adore Carlos, my thief with a heart of gold, and his story. He's brave and selfless and likes to see the good in others which is why despite everything, he doesn't let Regina go. Unlike the majority of my books, this one won't have a prologue simply because with an OUAT fic there's rarely a need for one due to all the flashbacks. I adore him and Regina together and the fact that he's Puss in Boots, one of my favourite animated characters growing up, just makes it better. Hopefully this book will be as good as what it's like in my head, or at least near enough.
