I. The other mysterious chaperone

Cecilia Sharpe sighs deeply through her nose as she scans the middle school gymnasium for the 10th time, making sure to keep a careful eye on all the 12/13 year old children dancing to their hearts content.

The pop music playing loudly through the large speakers fills her ears, which seems to make her even more annoyed. This music isn't even good. They should really play something better.

But it's what she signed up for of course- it's her fault for giving into her kids' pleas of: 'Mom it'll be fun we promise! Mom it won't be that bad'.

Lia laughs at her own thoughts; thinking back on how her two devils swayed her into coming here. She shakes her head knowing she has to deal with this for a few more hours.

Lia would do anything for her children. Celine and Scott are the light of her lives and she doesn't know where she would be without them.

To be honest, when she caught her ex husband cheating she thought her world was ending, he was the love of her life of course! Her high school sweetheart.

But she knew she had to pull through for her children.

Although it's stressful juggling her career and taking care of her children, she makes it work. With the help of her family and friends she's made sure everything has been perfect for them.

Another sigh leaves her lips as she sips the very sweet tasting fruit punch/drink thing in her cup. Surely this is stuff is unhealthy, right? It's bright pink and the foam is about to bubble over the top of the cup.

Oh well, she won't be here much longer...at least she hopes so.

She contemplates adding some whiskey, or even some rum, to her glass but that wouldn't be very responsible of her...although the screaming and cheering of about 100 kids in this packed gymnasium hall does make it tempting.

However it seems like fate has other options for Cecilia. Her gaze moves from the dance-floor towards someone else in the room; another chaperoning parent: Elias Black.

She's seen him a few times at school visits and parent teacher conferences, but has never attempted to strike up a conversation with him.

There's something about him that makes her want to go over to him, though. To talk to him. To make him notice her.

He seems to be regretting his life choices too, it looks like he doesn't want to be chaperoning here either- but anything for the kids right?

With a new found confidence she decides to make her way over to him. She needs some adult support right now to soothe her aching brain from this hell they call a school.

"So...which one is yours?" Lia has to lean up to his ear make sure he can hear her over this garbage kids call 'music' these days.

Elias is surprised to see Cecilia approach him but doesn't question anything. He has one hand in his pocket so he uses his free hand (which is also occupied by a cup of this fruit drink as well) and points to a girl standing away from all the other kids.

"There, that's my daughter, June" He leans down to her level to talk to her too. He's only a little bit taller than Lia but, then again, she is wearing 3 inch heels to hide her real height.

She nods in response, she hadn't even noticed that June was over there. Not a very sociable one it seems.

"What about you?" Elias asks. Lia sighs again and points to two children in the middle of the crowd. They're doing some weird dance move they've probably found online to show off to their friends.

"My twins, Scott and Celine" Elias seems to now recognise her. He smiles in recognition, which shows off his dimples, and places his cup down on the table in front of him that seems to be covered in glitter, food and...even more glitter.

"Ah so you're the twins' mother. June has told me a lot about them" Elias then realises that Cecilia has to go through the same fate as him tonight.

But instead of watching one kid she has to watch over two in this chaotic environment. And it seems like her kids are the ones that created the chaotic environment. "She says they're quite loud in class"

Lia shakes her head, knowing exactly what he's getting at. She's been told this way to many times at parent's evenings.

"They get that from me...but they mean no harm. They're both lovely children" Elias nods in understanding. However, there's something about this woman he finds intriguing.

He'd be lying if he said he didn't find her attractive- but he'd never admit that. He definitely wouldn't admit it out loud and definitely not in an environment where it could be heard by a snitching child.

The woman's brown eyes glance over to June who still hasn't moved from her spot in the corner of the gymnasium "She's adorable, the quiet type it seems?" Elias laughs softly, his voice sounding like a musical symphony to Lia's ears.

"Yes she's quite reserved; much like me...and she doesn't really like the loud noises either" He smiles gently, he would do anything for his daughter, she's the bright light in his dull life.

"But she didn't want to feel left out tonight. I thought that she'd be having at least some fun...but it doesn't seem like it" Elias says sadly. Lia frowns at this too, she does feel sorry for the girl.

"I'm Elias, by the way, Elias Black" Elias changes the subject and holds out a hand for Lia to shake. He doesn't want to intervene in his daughter's life (at least not yet). She's 12 now and almost a teenager, which is quite scary to him. She's able to make some of her own decisions.

Elias moves his thoughts away from June and back to the lady in front of him. His heart flutters in his chest the more he looks at her.

She's beautiful, but he doesn't just fall for looks alone. She has this personality and charm to her, he feels like he's a moth being pulled to a flame. How could someone so gorgeous be talking to him?

"Oh i know who you are. I've seen you a couple times when the parents have been dragged into this hell-hole" Lia jokes and happily takes Elias' hand for a gentle handshake. His skin is rough, but there's something comforting about this handshake that she can't quite make out.

"I'm Cecilia Sharpe...but i prefer Lia" Elias nods and tries to calm the butterflies in his stomach. For the first time this night he's glad that this music is about to give him (and everyone else) hearing problems.

Because if it was quiet then she would have heard the way his heart was about to beat out of his chest at her presence.
