•chapter ten: family feud...not the tv show•
As soon as we were done at the crime scene, I drove to S.T.A.R. Labs and burst into the Lab and demanded,
"Harrison. You were at the crime scene earlier today. Why?"
Barry, Caitlin, and Cisco all stood around a set of monitors and stared at me in surprise.
Harrison clenched his jaw and said, "Why are you here? I made it clear I didn't want to see you."
I glared at him and I gritted out, "Last time I checked, Harrison, you're kind of on the public's bad side. Why were you there? I saw you."
Harrison took off his glasses and cleaned them on his shirt, then put them back on. "And I saw you."
"Yeah. We established that." I said dryly. "Crime scenes aren't supposed to be for the public's eyes. The line of caution tape was at least a block away from the crash. Officers were directing traffic around it. So, I ask again. Why were you there?"
I crossed my arms over my chest and stared at him. This was my way of interrogating people. Present the facts and stare. It's normally very efficient.
Harrison sighed. "I've been here for the past hour, Madeline, I-"
"Yes. My shift ended an hour ago and I saw you at the scene an hour before my shift ended." I grit out. "You're not getting out of this one."
Harrison frowns at me and says, "Madeline, I don't know why you are-"
"You know why." I interrupted angrily. Cisco cleared his throat and said,
"Yeah... we'll be in the room with the awesome super speed treadmill I made for Barry if you need us..." And with that he, Barry, and Caitlin raced inside. I pressed the microphone button on the dash to turn off their access to hearing our conversation as soon as the door closed.
"I don't understand why you are lying to me, Madeline. You've never lied to me before. We always told each other everything. You keeping this a secret from me hurt me." Harrison said, getting right to the point.
"And you sending me away hurt me. You're a smart man, but that wasn't smart." I growled in return.
He sighed. "I know it wasn't. And I apologize. It was rash, and I was caught in the heat of the moment."
I crossed my arms over my chest and said, "You know, I sometimes wonder what happened to my dad. Not my biological one. You. You were the one that took me in, gave me a home and a love for science. I've looked up to you my whole life. But lately you've been so distant. Reserved. Like a different person. And I know you have been lying to me, too."
He cocked his head to the side. "I have? Do enlighten me."
"I'm not one to place blame before I know all the facts, but you, Harrison Wells, are hiding something from me- and the rest of the world. And I'm going to find out what it is."
Harrison chuckled. "Good luck with that, Madeline. Some secrets are buried so deeply that they're never to be found out."
I smirked and leaned forward against the table. "Not for me." I then turned on my heel and left the Lab.
I wasn't going to go back there until I had found out what Harrison was hiding from me.
But, in the meantime, I had an apartment to clean and get ready for a new potential roommate.
******
That weekend, I met my new roommate. Her name was Jessica, and Eddie had known her for his whole life. They were great friends, and she was from Starling City and moved here after the whole ordeal with the Queen family and Malcolm Merlyn went down.
I had received several text messages from Felicity about how pissed Oliver was when he found out Moira was a culprit.
I helped bring the last of her boxes and bags up to my apartment and helped her set up in the guest room.
After she had unpacked with my help, we crashed on the couch and I ordered take-out.
Jessica smiled. "Thanks, Madeline. There were a lot of boxes. I hope you're not too sore, though."
I laughed. "Oh, no problem. And I'm not sore. Physical therapy is helping with that." She nodded, seeming to believe me, then said,
"What's life like being an engineer and a detective?"
"Busy," I say with a laugh. "But it's worth it. I wouldn't call myself an engineer anymore. Now I'm really only working as a detective at the CCPD."
She smirked. "Cool. I'm going to apply for a job at the fire station. I was a firefighter back in Starling and helped a lot in the Glades. I figured Central City could use a new fire expert."
I raised an eyebrow and she laughed.
We sat together on the couch, eating lomain and watching Netflix. Sherlock was now my new favorite show.
We had binged all of season one and by then I was hooked. "Oh my gosh! They stop there?!" I exclaimed after the show ended. "That's where the season ends?! That's terrible!" I say, clicking onto season two.
Jessica laughs. "Maddie, you're funny. I had to wait almost a year and a half for three episodes. You're lucky you just get it on Netflix."
I chuckle. "I guess you're right."
Over the next few days, Jessica and I really bonded. She joined the fire department, and helped pay rent. She even bought all the groceries. She was an excellent cook.
Eddie was very happy that Jessica and I got along well.
The next day at the station, a call came in about a robber. We jumped on the case and drove over to the scene: an electronics store.
It was around six pm, and we entered the store quietly and carefully, knowing that the intruder could jump out and attack us at any moment.
I used my powers as an advantage and discretely tapped my glasses, holding my hand gun out, resting it on my fist clenched around my flashlight.
Eddie was in the same position to my left. "CCPD! Come out with your hands up! You're surrounded!" Eddie called out.
I looked around and I heard the robber's thoughts. He was behind the counter, and it was as if I could see him.
I paused and caught Eddie's attention and pointed towards the counter at the back of the room I had found the man behind. He nodded and crept to the left and I went to the right.
Heart pounding in my chest, I crouched down and hid my flashlight and turned it off. I hesitated, then decided to do it. I had never tried it... but maybe I could do it. I'd just have to be careful with Eddie just right there.
I closed my eyes and focused on the counter and thought of myself behind it...
...and I was.
I pinned the robber to the ground as he yelped in surprise. "Where'd you come from?!" He screeched as I pinned his arms behind his back and handcuffed him.
I didn't even take time to congratulate myself for not screwing up my teleportation abilities this time. I pushed his face into the floor and ground out,
"You are under arrest! Anything you say can and will be held against you!"
Eddie put his gun in it's holster and helped me lead the cuffed robber out of the electronics store and pushed him into the back of a police cruiser.
Eddie wiped his forehead and turned to me and said, "Whew. That was amazing, Kennedy. I didn't even see you sneak up on him."
I nodded and said, "It was easy. You kept your flashlight on so he was waiting for you. I turned mine off and snuck up on him in the dark."
He laughed as well. "Well, Maddie. You get the credit for this one. That was definitely all you."
I nodded and patted his shoulder. "Alright, Eddie. I'll take this one, but you have to get the next one."
He grinned. "Of course. Oh. How are things with Jessica? All moved in nicely?"
"Yeah. Everything's great. We have a lot in common."
Eddie grinned. "I'm glad. Hey. Could I ask you about something?"
"Yeah, of course." I say with a smile.
"Well. I wanted to, ah... ask Iris to move in with me. Maybe around Christmas? It'll be a year by then. Do you think that it's too early? Will she say no?"
I gasped. "Really? Oh my gosh, Eddie! It's an amazing idea! She's been telling me all about how happy she is with you and if you ask her, I guarantee she'll say yes."
"Really? Wow. Well, if you say so." He says with a chuckle. "Have you seen Barry lately? He hasn't been at the station all that much."
I knew where he had been for the past several weeks since he woke up. But I shrugged and said, "I don't know. I haven't spoken to him in a while."
"Ah. Well. Tell him he's missed at the station. He should come back soon." Eddie glanced at his watch and said, "I gotta go. I'll see you around, Maddie!" I waved goodbye and when he disappeared, I frowned.
Barry was at S.T.A.R. Labs. With Caitlin and Cisco and Harrison. The three of them didn't even know about my new power.
I hadn't seen much of Barry in almost a month now. Since then, he had taken down several metahumans.
There was the Mardon brother who controlled the weather, then a guy that could turn into poisonous gas. Then another guy who could duplicate himself. Then finally a girl that was actually a bomb.
I only knew all of this because Barry texted me about it. But that was it.
I bit my lip.
But I was a meta, too.
So what was I going to do?
******
Two weeks later, I found myself with an answer to that very question. Barry came in to the station looking tired, but handed me a suitcase. I glanced over to see a prisoner with crazy glasses being escorted past us. Weird.
"This is from Cisco. Don't open it here. He made you one, too." He said and I raised both eyebrows.
He smirked slightly and leaned in next to my ear and whispered, "Maybe The Flash could have a partner?"
I rolled my eyes and nodded. "Yeah. Y'know, I was thinking about that earlier." I said. My eyes focused on a cut on his chin and I pretended to wipe some dirt off his chin, licking my thumb and then rubbed it over the small scrape and it vanished.
His hand came up to take mine. His eyes scanned the room, then found mine. "Be careful doing that, Maddie."
"Does it feel better?" I asked.
"Well, yes, but you should be more careful."
I shrugged and said with a smirk. "You had some paint on your chin, Barry, I have no idea what you're insinuating."
He rolled his eyes and smiled at me. "Thanks." He said finally. "You should go try it on. I wanna see it-"
He broke off as the power suddenly went out in the station. He met my eyes and his hand clamped onto mine.
"Go," I said, squeezing his hand and gently pulling away. "You need to get to the Labs, Barry. Go."
He nodded. "Stay safe, Maddie. Please." He said. Then, he was gone.
And no sooner had he disappeared than a gun went off. The prisoner had shot an officer. I dove under my desk with the suitcase, then teleported outside and into the alley. I opened the suitcase and my eyes widened.
Cisco had made me a suit.
I pulled out the top and it was a simple zip-up jacket, but had a hood. It came with pants, boots, and fingerless gloves.
I began to get out of my uniform as I changed into the suit. I tied my hair back, pulled up the hood, and then picked up the mask.
On the mask was taped a note. Don't worry about your voice, Mads. The mask has tech that'll disguise your voice like Barry can disguise his. Have fun, Phantom ;)
I lifted the mask to my face, tied it off under my hair and cleared my throat.
I rolled my shoulders and stuffed my uniform and glasses into the suitcase which I hid in an alcove I could get later.
I rolled my shoulders, closed my eyes, and teleported back into the station. It was surrounded by cops now, Singh yelling into a microphone.
The dark blue and black colors of the suit made me hardly noticeable in the darkness.
I froze suddenly as I saw Joe handcuffed with Iris tied up next to him. And that's when I saw Eddie.
Time seemed to slow for a moment as all of a sudden, the prisoner pointed the gun he was holding at him and fired twice.
Eddie collapsed and Iris screamed.
I couldn't risk this guy shooting anyone else. I had to do something.
I teleported down the hall and lifted a hand to my ear, where the suit contained an earpiece. "Cisco? Cisco, are you there? Caitlin?"
I cursed as nothing but static came back. What the hell was happening??
I heard Iris crying now. Eddie groaned in pain.
"Hey! Look- just let them go, ok?" Joe said. "Let them go. Let this one get a doctor. He's going to bleed out, and you know that."
The man barely replied with a voice void of emotion. I had to do something.
I closed my eyes and located the prisoner's mind. He was counting down seconds as if he had planned each one out.
But I guess Barry was right. I was a Phantom. And what where Phantoms good at?
Messing up plans.
