•chapter nine: the brother who lived•

I pulled off my glasses and set them on the dining room table and wrapped my fingers in my hair. No, this wasn't real. I totally did not just do that in front of Joe West.

"Ohhhhh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh." I looked at Barry's shocked expression and Joe's face morphed in terror. I then began to pace.

"What's happening?" I heard Joe ask.

"She's making her 'thinky face'." Barry replied. I continued to pace. There had to be an explanation for what was happening.

"Her what face?" Joe asked.

"Don't interrupt her. She'll go bad cop on you."

Joe sighed. "I know her bad cop side; it's not pretty."

I rubbed my eyes, pulled off my jacket and set it on the table as well and pointed at the couch.

"Joe. I have something I need to talk to you about. And you might want to sit down for it." He looks at Barry, eyes wide and I say, "I need to know that I can trust you with this... I mean, you just saw me... appear and reappear from different areas of your house."

Joe sat down on the couch and I picked up my glasses and settled into the armchair across from him. Barry stood off to the side. "You can trust me, Maddie. I won't tell anyone."

I nodded. "Good. Because you won't be able to lie to me anymore. I'll know." I looked down at the glasses and said,

"First of all, nothing is wrong with my brain and I don't need these glasses."

"Then... what are they for?"

"Dampening my powers of being able to read minds and communicate with them telepathically. I developed the tech in the glasses with Cisco so that when I tap the temple piece, then it'll turn on and off the dampening affects of my powers. And I can heal myself and anyone else by touching them. Just touching them. When I was hurt during the explosion, I was affected by the wave of energy and given these powers. We're calling people affected like I was metahumans."

"Metahumans... so you're telling me you're a super hero now or something? Because telepathy, healing, and teleportation sound like superpowers from a comic book..." Joe says, looking at me with with apprehension.

I nodded. "Yeah. That's, ah, pretty much it. I told you you should sit down. S.T.A.R. Labs and I are trying to find if anyone else in Central City turned up with powers, too."

Barry stepped forward and said, "When I was hit by that lightning, I was given powers, too." Joe looked between the two of us with a haunted look and Barry and I went back and forth trying to explain what had happened to us and that we now had unexplainable powers. It took about an hour to get Joe to calm down about it all.

When we were finished, he stood up and looked at me and asked,

"You read minds?"

I nodded. "Well, yeah, but-"

"Then tell me what I'm thinking. I need to believe this, so prove it to me." I sighed and looked at him, holding my glasses in my hands and said,

"Why are you thinking about quadratic formulas?" I smirked. "Do you even know what all that means?"

Joe sighed. "Alright. Fine. You can read minds. And no, I have no idea what that means. All I know is that you memorized those equations when you were thirteen and would always come over and tell me about them."

He paused, then looked down at the coffee table and before I could stop him, he deliberately rammed his shin into the corner and let out a yelp.

"Joe!" I exclaim. "You idiot!" I push him back onto the couch and pull up his pant leg to reveal a bruise already forming and a trickle of blood from a cut over it.

He smirked. "Heal it."

I looked him in the eye, set my hand on it, and my hand warmed, his face pained expression vanished with the small wound. I pulled his pant leg down again and wiped the blood still on my hand from his cut on him.

"There. Joe." I sighed heavily, then met his eyes. "I broke every bone in my body. I was dead. If that particle accelerator hadn't released the energy wave that gave me my powers, I wouldn't be standing before you today. My healing powers helped heal my body faster than humanly possible. Those days you saw me in the wheelchair were for show. I was completely healed but couldn't just walk around only two months after virtually dying."

Joe nodded. "Well, Maddie. I think having a telepath ad a detective will be mighty handy."

Barry began laughing and I rolled my eyes, but smiled.

******

The next day, Barry stayed at the Lab to practice with Cisco, Caitlin, and Harrison, and I went to the station.

I sat down at my desk and began to sort through some files of the Mardon brothers. Their plane had crashed when the explosion hit and both are presumed dead. That word- "presumed". After the accelerator exploded, I used the word because I had no idea myself what was possible now.

I pulled at the button on my jacket and felt the familiar pressure of the gun at my hip and badge clipped on my jacket. My uniform always made me feel normal... now even more so with my freaky powers.

I looked up to see Eddie take a seat across from me as he set his bag on the desk. He grinned at me. "So, Kennedy." He began. "I was thinking."

"About what?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"About the whole case with the Mardon brother's plane crash." He looked around. "We only found one body. What if one survived?"

Case and point- presumed dead. I looked at him and nodded. "That's a possibility. But where would he be?"

Eddie shrugged. "That's why we're the detectives. How's Barry doing by the way?"

"He's resting, but he should be back to work this afternoon. He wants to sleep late and get his mind back on track." I oftentimes hated myself for being able to lie so smoothly.

"Ah. Makes sense. We should reschedule the bowling alley trip. I think Barry would have a lot of fun."

I nodded. "

Eddie smirked. "Oh. Before I forget again. I have a friend who's looking for a roommate. I can give you her number, if you want. I thought of you immediately. Don't know why, though." I smiled and accepted the slip of paper he handed me.

"Thanks, Eddie. Now I have a question for you. Your last name....Thawne. What does it mean? Do you know it's origin?"

Eddie sat back in his chair and thought for a moment. "Well... I don't really know. It's been a family name since the Middle Ages, I think. Don't look it up on Urban Dictionary, though. It's a bit... well... you know that site." He blushed a little then cleared his throat and leaned forward to rest his elbows on his desk. "Anyways. Besides it's dirty meaning now adays, what's your fascination with it?"

I shrugged. "I was just wondering. Kennedy is my last name because my first adoptive parents signed my birth certificate. I don't have a last name without that. I'm just interested in family trees." That wasn't a lie. I was actually interested in family trees and genetics. I blamed Caitlin for talking about it so much.

Eddie smirked. "You always surprise me, Kennedy. As for this case, I-"

He stopped when my phone began buzzing like crazy and then our pagers went off.

A car crash under the bridge.

I picked up my phone to see Barry calling me. I answered it immediately.

"Hello?"

"Maddie! Come quickly to the car crash."

"Barry, are you there already?" I gritted out, standing and giving Eddie a look.

"Yeah. And you're not gonna like who the culprit is."

The line went dead and I watched as the other officers rushed around to get to the crash.

"I'll get the car." Eddie said.

"Meet you there." I said with a nod and watched him run out the door.

My stomach dropped and I had time to dive under a desk without being seen before I reappeared...

Under the bridge and standing next to Barry.

I put a hand to my head and Barry steadied me, recovering quickly from the shock of me appearing. "Wow. That was fast, Mads." He said.

I nodded. "I need to learn how to control these teleportation abilities at some point." I winced slightly and rubbed at my eyes. "Alright. Who did you see?" He winced.

"One of the Mardon brothers. He's alive. And he could control this fog and escaped in it."

"So he was affected, too. He's a meta. Alright, we need to-"

"Kennedy! I didn't see you leave!" I heard Eddie's voice call and I had a small moment of panic. He grinned at Barry and said, "Good to see you awake."

"Ah. I rode with Joe." I say as I see him walking over to us and I tap my glasses and tell him quickly what happened. Joe paused and looked at me, then nodded and said,

"Yup. Maddie rode with me. What are we looking at here, a crash?"

Barry spoke up, "Joe? Could I talk to you?"

I nodded and chased after Eddie and we began to examine the scene. A man was covered on a stretcher and being lead away. I knew he was dead.

I pulled out a notebook and began to jot down basic field notes while Eddie spoke with some of the witnesses. I write out what information I had- excluding the facts of what Barry gave me.

"Hey, Maddie," Eddie said as he jogged over to me. "So I spoke to some witnesses and they're willing to give a description to some sketch artists. And, well, apparently this is who they saw both at the bank and here where the mysterious fog came in." He handed me a paper with a sketch of Mardon and I scowled.

"I guess he did survive." And had some sort of ability to manipulate weather.

"But what's with the fog? There's no hidden fog machines anywhere." He said and frowned at me. I shrugged.

"Dunno, Eddie, but we are the detectives. We'll figure it out." He laughed and nodded, patting my shoulder before turning to go and find Singh with the sketch.

I went to join my partner when I looked up suddenly to see movement in front of me and I glared.

Sitting under a clump of trees- almost out of sight completely- was Harrison Wells, watching the crime scene, then turned and left, his wheelchair disappearing between the trees and out of sight.
