Arielle's POV:

"Yes, she did."

Jaylin didn't say anything, just looked down on the ground.

"Jaylin why didn't you tell me?"

"I did..." She said quietly.

"No you didn't. Jaylin, I think I would remember you telling me something so important." I said to her, confused about when she told me.

"I definitely did, but maybe back then you were too naive, too innocent, to think it was something serious."

"It happened when we were younger? When?" I asked.

"Do you remember in sixth grade, after school when we went to go get ice-cream at Cold Stone?"    She asked.

"Uhm...no." I said.

I heard Jaylin let out a humorless laugh and she said "Of course you wouldn't, for you, it was just any other day, hanging out with your friend. But for me it was so much more than that." She said, and then I heard sniffling.

"Jaylin, I'm sorry." I said, wanting to hug her but not knowing if that was the best action in this situation.

She didn't say anything so I asked "So you've liked me since the sixth grade?"

She nodded her head and said "Yeah. Maybe even earlier than then, but I guess that's when I realized when I didn't just like you in a 'best friend' sort of way."

"I see." I said, not knowing what else to say.

We just sat there in silence, for about two minutes when she asked, "Is that all you wanted to ask?"

"No... there's definitely more I would like to ask but I don't know if I should." I answered.

"You can ask me all the questions you want to Arielle." She said.

"Okay. So you said that you told me in the sixth grade that you liked me?" I asked.

She nodded in conformation so I continued, "You obviously must've known that I didn't understand it the way that you meant it, so why didn't you tell me again?"

"Because I didn't think that you were gay, or at least had an interest in girls, and I wasn't going to tell you that I liked you, and risk losing our friendship. But then when the whole Mason thing happened, I finally thought it was my chance to tell you how I feel."

I just sat there in silence trying to process everything that she was saying when she continued, "I'm a terrible person, I know, instead of worrying about my best friend who had something awful happen to her, I was thinking of ways to tell you how I feel and... try to start a relationship with you."

"Jaylin. Don't say that you're a terrible person. Ever. Trust me, even though I should be mad at that, I'm not, it's in the past now."

Wait a second...

"Jaylin?"

"Yes?" She responded.

"When you saw that I was interested in Jennifer, why didn't you say anything then?" I asked.

"Because." She took a deep breath, "Even though you didn't know it, I could tell, that you were into Jennifer, from the very beginning, and I had no chance against her in a competition for you. So I simply just cheered you on, because even though I would like to be the one that makes you happy, Jennifer does, and I know she won't hurt you, and so I did my best to support you two."

"So, how come you didn't tell Jennifer that you liked me from the beginning?

"That's the thing. I didn't tell Jennifer. My plan wasn't to tell either one of you guys, she just happened to find out."

"When?"

"She found out the day I told you to be with her. After you left from her house she called and said that she knew."

"She then asked why I hadn't told you yet and I told her everything that I just told you. She offered to break up with you if I wanted, I said no of course, but I guess she thought it was too much for me to see you guys together."

"Jaylin..." I sighed.

"This is exactly why I didn't want to tell you. Because it would just complicate things."

"Of course it's gonna complicate things Jaylin, I mean we can't exactly go back to how we were before all of this." I said to her.

"So you're saying that you don't want to be my friend anymore? Is that it?" She asked.

"No, I just mean it's gonna take a while for things to go back to the way they were is all."

"Oh, yea I figured..." She said softly.

"Well, I guess I'll be going now." I said standing up.

"Bye Arielle." She said standing up along with me.

I had absolutely no idea if I should've hugged her or not so I just settled for a simple wave and walked out of the room.

When I was headed out the front door I heard "Well, how'd it go?"

I turned around and faced Sophie and said "I mean, it could've gone worse?"

She just rolled her eyes and headed up the stairs, probably to go to her room to comfort Jaylin.

I headed out the front door and hurried into my car.

I put my forehead on the steering wheel and sighed.

Why did my life have to be so complicated?
