Chapter 08: Naomasa

"I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" Naomasa asked, the USJ was thankfully a well-contained disaster. Minor injuries on the students; and the two present teaching staff thankfully only had heavy, but non-debilitating or life threatening injuries. Honestly, the best case scenario.

But, something was strange.

Specifically with Toshi's disciple.

"He was just there, he bashed the hands guy's head in while the big black one was trying to maim him." A blonde boy explained, Kaminari Denki recalled the events that happened prior.

"And how did you and your group hold up, you previously stated that there were, and I quote, about a hundred villains all around us." Kaminari hummed in thought, rubbing his chin as he sat down by the paramedics.

"Bakugo and Sero were the ones keeping all the baddies away, Midoriya asked them to. Damn, that guy kept barking orders when the villains started pouring in." Naomasa nodded, writing down on his notes. It was strange, by all the students he interviews, they came to the same conclusion.

Midoriya was the one leading the defense on the USJ.

He was strange, that kid, he really was.

Now, Toshinori was never subtle about his little protégé. My God, the amount of photos that the hero sends him is nothing short of cluttering. He was proud of the boy, immensely so. And judging by what Naomasa had heard of the boy, he's pretty well inclined to give him some respect for what he's done for the two present staff during the USJ. He did what he could as a hero in training.

But that wasn't the strangest part, from what he's heard.

"Could you expound on that, Todoroki?" He asked the next student, gathering bits and pieces of what happened in the USJ, he was starting to get a clearer and clearer picture of what took place in the Plaza main.

"What's there to explain?" Todoroki huffed, his arms crossed as a field nurse checked his temperature due to minor hypothermia. "He reeled me in to assist with capturing the main three villains. The Smoke villain, he was a warper, an immensely fast one at that. Tomura Shigaraki, I caught his name; the one covered in hands, he had a disintegration quirk. I'm sure that he was the ringleader of all of this. And..."

Todoroki paused, dwelling on the last syllable, he shook his head, looking off in the distance. "I'm not sure what that thing was, Midoriya said it wasn't human. Said it wasn't even alive. That thing... was indestructible."

Naomasa kept writing, his gaze lingering on the Todoroki as he explained. "How did Midoriya manage?" he asked. Todoroki shrugged.

"His strength kept the warper and Shigaraki at bay for the most part. He struggled fighting the beast." He scowled. "Midoriya kept using his quirk to hit the beast in the head. He kept... killing it? I'm not too sure, it kept coming back up. But I was sure."

Todoroki's voice trailed off. "It's... It's brain splattered, I saw it. But it kept coming back." The boy shook his head.

Naomasa grimaced, whatever that thing was, it wasn't looking good.

They never even recovered it, statements by the students before said that the three main villains made a break for it the moment staff entered the facility. All the students, all of them recalled how the large black creature entered the fray in the latter half of the disaster.

"Couldn't even fucking see half the fight." Katsuki Bakugo shrugged, his hands bandaged and bruised. Quirk overuse no doubt. "Izuku was the one taking on the three dipshits, would've been at the main fight if I wasn't hauling ass for the rest." Naomasa nodded.

"He was a fantastic example of the heroic spirit sir." Iida Tenya added, his rigid posture and upright demeanor contrasted with his banged up armor that the paramedics were struggling to get off.

"I truly believe that if he wasn't there, our chances would've been less than zero sir." The detective glanced at Midoriya, every single one of his classmates mentioned him one way or another whenever they recounted the events of the USJ attack.

"Midoriya was livid, I could tell by his eyes. There was some semblance of darkness- cold, frozen anger when he heard the Villan's name." Tokoyami Fumikage explained. "I couldn't understand what they were saying, but the villain kept taunting him, kept yelling at him. But Midoriya conversed with swings of his hammer." Naomasa nodded, his notes were starting to get full.

"Maan I don't know dude." Sero Hanta rubbed his chin, staring off into the sky. "Guy had a real knack for our quirks, who knew me and Bakugo would make a good team, him blasting everyone off and me wrapping the villains up in a neat little package, y'know?" Sero nodded to himself, Naomasa merely scribbling down on his notepad.

"He-he grabbed me, I thought I was done for." Asui Tsuyu struggled to get out, she was cowering, struggling to control her sobs. "Midoriya didn't even let a minute pass I think. The moment he saw the villain grab me he- he..." Naomasa huffed, he could see the story now, he took a deep breath and sighed. It was starting to get dark, honestly, crisis averted.

But that left him with one last student.

"Midoriya Izuku, I presume?" He asked, the boy nodded, his arms being bandaged up. "If you could follow me, I think we need a bit more privacy, don't you think?" something sharp glinted in the boy's eyes. Izuku nodded, apologized to the nurse before following the detective.

They came up to his car, the Detective taking out a new notepad before speaking. "Just so you know, I'm in with everything that Toshinori has going on." He shrugged, the boy smiled and nodded. Naomasa took out a tape recorder, he had a bit of a clue.

Just a tiny hint that the boy knew a bit more than his peers, he was of course the student at the center of the plaza main. Naomasa hit record. "Just a bit of formalities you see: This is Tsukauchi Naomasa, following the ongoing investigation on the League of Villains' attack on U.A, the Unforseen Simulation Joint event."

"Recollection of events by: Class 1A student no.18... name?" Naomasa asked, the white haired boy just smiled back.

"Midoriya Izuku."

(True/False)

"What" Naomasa blinked, his quirk cued, but at the same time it didn't. "I'm Sorry, could you repeat that?" He asked, the boy looked at him curiously, his head tilting in thought.

"I'm Midoriya Izuku."

(False/True)

Naomasa furrowed his brow. What.

What was going on? His quirk never acted up before. Not like this.

"Is there anything wrong, detective?" the boy asked, Naomasa shook his head.

"Nevermind." He cleared his throat. "Now I understand that you were the one at the center of the defense against the League of Villains, correct?" Midoriya nodded. "What were their goals, was it only to kill All Might? As stated by several of your classmates."

"From what I've understood from the attack, yes the main goal was All Might's death." Midoriya started, his hand reaching up to rub his chin. "Although, I'm not too sure if it was the only thing that they were after." Naomasa nodded, his pen scratching up on the paper as he wrote.

"They're looking..." Naomasa looked up to the boy, there was something in his eyes that he couldn't pin down. Nonverbal cues and facial expressions were a key part of investigation, discerning and identifying cues was part of training after all.

"They're looking for the successor." His pen stopped, he was now fully looking at the boy, Midoriya's mouth a thin line as he spoke.

"Did they find what they were looking for?" Naomasa asked.

"They did." Midoriya nodded, if... if they were looking for the successor, no. Only a select few knew of One for All, unless. Unless there's been a leak somewhere. Somewhere so deep, so secure that not only are they aware of the Quirk, but they're aware that it's been passed down. Naomasa grimaced.

There was a far grimmer theory of course, but he didn't want to entertain the idea.

"Are you... do you have any clues to who might've-" Naomasa was cut off by the boy speaking, his pen coming down to a screeching halt.

"There was a creature that they deployed." Midoriya started. "They called it a Noumu, A bio-engineered weapon designed with All Might in mind." The boy continued. "It had multiple quirks detective, the... Villain, Tomura declared it when he unleashed the thing upon Sir Aizawa."

Multiple-... no. No. No. He was dead.

Ice, all the Naomasa felt hearing Midoriya's recollection was ice.

The other students talked of the beast, some even saw the beast. But Midoriya... the villain practically gave a thesis on what it was, and gratefully gave it to the boy.

"At least a few Strength quirks, durability, stamina, impact immunity from what I've seen. And hyper regeneration." The detective wrote down every detail, every small tidbit, if Midoriya was implying what he thought he was. Then this attack might've be the tamest for what's to follow.

"It only responded to Tomura sir, no one else. I tried, I tried to take it down. Several heavy blows to the head sir, but it kept coming back. The regeneration outclassed my strength I'm afraid."

"I'm sure. I'm sure someone out there is giving these things quirks."

Chills, Naomasa didn't know for certain. But with how the situation is looking, nothing good was coming up for them.

How did he know?

That was the biggest question at the center of it all.

How did Midoriya know?

Naomasa was looking at the boy, the white haired kid's expression unreadable, obscured. Like there was a veil in front of his face.

But he's a trained detective.

He should be able to read faces.

But he can't

There's something about this boy, something underneath the underneath.

But he can't tell what.

"Is that all you have to say towards... the Noumu? Midoriya?" he asked. "Before I end this, I just need to ask one last thing; How-" He was cut off again, Midoriya raising his hand before he managed to speak.

"All good things sir, I promise. I'm training to be a hero after all."

Naomasa was reluctant, the way he spoke, the implication that he knew more than he was letting on. Toshi trusted him.

Toshinori trusted this boy, so Naomasa was reluctantly giving him the benefit of the doubt.

But he'll definitely look a bit deeper in his disciple's history.

Naomasa gave a quick glance at the white-haired boy, not missing the curly snow white hair on his head.

He clicked his tongue, he didn't like where this was going.

"Please, just enlighten me on one more thing before I finish up." The detective asked.

"Tokoyami stated that you were unusually aggravated when you heard the Villain's name, Shigaraki Tomura. Do you... do you have a relationship, or know anything about him, any relatives?" His pen was hovering over the paper, God, he was going to have another long night opening up this Pandora's box.

"Nothing much to say." Midoriya shrugged. "He didn't deserve that name."

(True)
