Chapter 01: Inko
Izuku was a weird kid, Inko would be the first person to admit that. From birth he was a strange one; normal babies would cry, whine, and yell on a regular basis, but Izuku never did. The moment he was born the doctors were confused on why he didn't cry, it worried Inko at first, but all her worries were laid to rest when she saw those beautiful peridot eyes staring back at her.
He was such a darling child, so quiet, so polite, those eyes full of curiosity. Inko absolutely adored her little boy, never missing an opportunity to show off photos of him to her friends and coworkers.
Inko couldn't miss the way Hisashi would soften up to Izuku either. Her husband was always a hardy one, those stone cold eyes of his definitely wormed its way to Izukus' genetics. Always a hardass, but she knew he'd coddle Izuku whenever she wasn't looking. Adorable.
It's been like this for a solid few years. She took a maternity leave while Hisashi continued his work as a pencil pusher up north Musutafu, occasionally the Bakugos would come visit by and bring their own little spitfire along. It was nice to think, whenever Masaru and Mitsuki brought along Katsuki, both him and Izuku were practically inseparable. It always brought a smile to her face whenever Katsuki would bounce across the room while Izuku just sat there in his vain attempt to calm his friend down. They were practically brothers at this point, not like Inko or the Bakugos would protest to that.
"Mom Mom! Look look! All Mights' so cool !" was Katsukis' signature catchphrase to jostle around Izuku whenever the hero would appear on TV. Of course Mitsuki would be there to.... Knock- some sense into little Katsuki every time Izuku had a little too much excitement.
"Oi hands off! You're stressing him out." The ash blond woman would say, but Inko knew that Izuku didn't mind, not with that serene smile on his face watching Katsuki zip around imitating the number one hero's moves.
"It's fine, I think Izuku needs a bit of exercise once in a while anyways." He wasn't inactive per say, it was always like he was somewhere between the living room and his own bedroom, reading books and drawing. And what a little artist her son was! The fridge peppered with notebook and pad drawings of either heroes or Inko, not Hisashi though. She often wondered why it was never Hisashi.
Mitsuki sighed, wiping her brow free of sweat as she sat Katsuki down next to the mini Midoriya on the couch. "I swear, I never know how your wrangled Izuku to be so well behaved." Inko chuckled from her work in the kitchen. "Nothing much to wrangle, he's always been like that." She replied while Mitsuki just shrugged.
"You know, their birthday's coming up soon right?" Mrs. Bakugo spoke up, walking back to the kitchen with Inko as Izuku and Katsuki sat on the couch plastered on the Telly.
She just sighed back "they're just growing up so fast." Inko said softly "it's like it was just yesterday, I was changing his diapers. Now he's almost about to get his quirk." Mitsuki just scoffs, grabbing some water from the fridge and a bunch of cups from the rack. "Not like you're gonna have much trouble anyways." She took a moment to pour water into all the cups. "You've got Hisashi, and I know Izukus' quirk's gonna be a hell of a lot more manageable than my brat's. I mean look at him." She gestured back to the living room, Inko took a glance. Her little boy was just scribbling with crayons in his notepad while Katsuki was moving up and about on the sofa watching an All Might special. "Right?"
She just shook her head. "Don't cut yourself short, Katsuki listens to his dad." The older Bakugo just barked out a laugh at that. It really was a contrast, Mitsuki was an often crass and temperamental woman after all, and Masaru was just... Masaru. Calm and always the mediator between her and Katsuki when things got heated. "So! That little problem with Hisashi, eh? Still going on?"
"Urgh..." Inko just groaned. "It's not like he's disobedient or anything... He just listens to me more." It wasn't a problem, it was never a problem. But people around the Midoriya household knew that little Izuku loved his mom way more than his dad. Like how Izuku wouldn't move whenever Hisashi asked him to come over, or whenever he'd ask Izuku who his favourite was, he'd point to Inko... or All Might whenever his image was on the TV. Honestly it was a relief that Izuku had that adorable, rebellious petulant side to him.
"Still... it's so cute how much a momma's boy he is!" Mitsuki absolutely cackled at Inkos' embarrassment.
"I just wish he'd spend more time with Hisashi, it's hard enough how late his job gets." Before the female Bakugo could reply, the main door opened as a tall white headed figure came in.
"Hun, I'm home." Hisashi with his short and curly white hair bellowed out from the living room. He hung his jacket at the rack, taking a glance at the television before making his way to the dinner table. "Really? All Might again?" He pecked Inko's forehead, his height towering over her really helped in that department.
"Oh you know them... they love their heroes." She replied with a smile.
Hisashi just shrugged "Eh, I try. I swear Izuku's going to be marvelous at management. Should probably show him around the office if I get the chance. " Inko just shook her head dismissively as she gave Hisashi and Mitsuki plates. "Let them choose, they're three."
The smuggest expression passed Hisashis' face as he set the table. "Oh and now I'm the villain, little miss 'My son's gonna play the violin' ?" He grunted as Inko landed a soft punch on his forearm while picking up the utensils. "Just set the table." She replied. Hisashi just chuckled, ignoring Mitsukis' teasing and general gibberish.
She grabbed the food from the stove top "Izuku! Katsuki! Dinner's ready!" and so they sat at the table, Katsuki scarfing up her cooking while the more civilized ones ate politely. Inko took a deep breath and sighed, everything was where it's supposed to be.
Such was life.
>BREAK
"I'm sorry, but your son is quirkless." The doctor pushed up his glasses, her little boy sitting by her lap, clutching his notebook by his chest as he just looked back at her. Her tears started to well up as she just looked back at him. His peridot eyes betraying nothing of his emotions, it stung- it really did. Inko knew, Izuku never said it. But she knew how much his eyes would sparkle whenever he saw heroes saving the day. "It's okay..." he whispered through her cardigan.
"He has the double toe joint." The doctor continued as Inko just clutched her son closer to her. "It's not a hundred percent chance that he's quirkless... but it's been proven that it's either a lack of a quirk factor, or a recessive quirk." He explained "I'm sorry." The doctor curtly bowed his head. Inko was having none of that, she and Izuku just walked out of the clinic, tears still threatening to pour out as she held her son's hand.
"Mom?" her little shrub of a son asked. She sniffled, using the sleeve of her cardigan to wipe the tears. "I'm sorry Izuku." He didn't reply, just looking down on his other hand with the notebook. Inko looked down, Izuku's face full of concern before looking away. She knelt down to his level and snatched him up in a hug. "I'm so sorry..." she repeated. Her little boy just rest his face by the crook of her neck as he stroked whatever hair he could hold on to.
"I'm okay mom... it's okay..." they separated, even through the tears she could see. She could see that hardy look her husband had in Izukus' peridot eyes. "S'not gonna change much." He whispered through her own sniffles.
Inko was ashamed, honestly. How strong her son was compared to her. One last time she wiped her tears away. "Izuku... what do you want to be when you grow up?" she asked, giving him a wobbly yet sincere smile.
"I dunno..." he took out his hankie from his pocket and wiped the excess moisture on her cheeks from the tears. "I just wanna help people."
"Do you want to become a hero?" Inko asked him, both her hands on his shoulders. "Do you want to become a hero, Izu?" she repeated from his lack of an answer.
Izuku rubbed the nape of his neck, softly kicking a small pebble aside. "I dunno." His voice so soft, so gentle. "If it's okay?"
"I just wanna help."
Inko scooped up her son, peppering his head with kisses. "Okay- you..." She struggled to whisper out, holding back the tears from even peaking through.
"You can be a hero."
