Soobin jolted awake at the sound of loud tapping on glass.
The moon was still high, and its presence signaled that it was either very late at night or very early in the morning. As the boy came to, he took in at once the view of the dark bedroom and the feeling of a warm person huddled up to him.
Soobin lightly smiled down at Yeonjun, who had an arm draped over his waist, fast asleep.
"Hey," a muffled voice came from outside the window, scaring the absolute shit out of Soobin. He looked around, just in time to catch the sight of someone's hand outside reaching up to tap on the glass.
Soobin stared at it for a moment, debating whether to actually check it out or not.
Eventually, his rational side gave up, and he gently moved Yeonjun's arm off of him as to stand up.
Wandering over to the window. Soobin took in the sight of someone outside sitting directly beneath it in waiting, as if they were expecting to be let in. Surely no criminal or robber would act like this?
And so, Soobin unlatched the window, pulling it open.
"Oh, thank god," the person outside said as they stood up, brushing off the back of their pants. "Jun, I swear, I thought you'd never let me—"
The person froze as they made eye contact with Soobin.
"Oh... Soobin?" the boy whispered as Soobin squinted to make out their face in the darkness.
"Kai???" he questioned, recognizing the face of the boy who had near-kidnapped him a while back.
"Shit, I really thought you were Yeonjun," Kai muttered as he began climbing up and into the window, swinging a leg inside.
"Help me up?"
Soobin hesitantly grabbed the boy's outstretched hand and helped pull him over the windowsill.
Kai then softly shut the window behind him, scanning over Yeonjun's darkened bedroom.
He quickly took notice of the room owner in question passed out on a beanbag nearby and snickered at the sight.
"Surprising that he hasn't woken up yet," Kai mumbled, speaking more quietly as he took notice also of a girl, Yeji, asleep alone across the room on Yeonjun's bed.
"So, uh, Kai, what's with you visiting at... 2am?" Soobin questioned quietly as he walked towards the door of Yeonjun's room, feeling it would be easier to talk in the hallway where no one was sleeping.
"I could also ask why you're here at this hour," Kai returned as he followed Soobin out of the bedroom.
"We were sleeping?" Soobin answered.
"Yeah. I can see that," Kai shook his head, glancing back towards the bedroom.
"We should go talk in the living room. If he's sleeping he probably needs it," he then added, gesturing for Soobin to walk with him.
Thankfully Soobin's eyes were adjusted to the dark hallways by now. He didn't have to worry about seeing on his way through the house, although he was a little concerned about his footsteps being too loud.
Upon arriving at the living room, Kai jumped onto the sofa happily, clearly not any less energetic despite the late hour.
Soobin sat down next to him, staring at the boy questioningly.
"So... you're really not gonna tell me why you're here?"
"I do this all the time. Yeonjun wouldn't question it," Kai said, leaning back against the couch and kicking his feet up on the coffee table in front.
"But why..." Soobin trailed off, suddenly thinking over the idea of some random other boy... coming over to visit his Yeonjun at night all the time...
Kai stared at Soobin for a moment, before scrunching his nose lightly.
"Oh," Kai started speaking. "Don't make it weird. There's no need to be pissed off, we're just friends."
Soobin only blinked.
"Huh...? How did you kno—"
"People smell different when they're mad. Get over it, there's no need to be sus," Kai crossed his arms, totally not noticing the absolutely mortified look Soobin was giving him at the moment.
"Right," Soobin agreed sarcastically. "They... smell different. As if you could tell from..."
The memory of what Kai actually was hit Soobin like a brick.
"Shit!" Soobin swore. "I forgot you're a demon! God, that scared me for a second," he borderline ranted.
Kai snickered at this.
"So you're the jealous type, huh? That'll be a nice change for Yeonjun."
"Shut up," Soobin responded, feeling an embarrassed heat rise to his cheeks.
Kai laughed at this for a moment, his fang-like canine teeth quite prominent in his smile.
Soobin's gaze focused on them for a moment, slowly processing this detail. He'd seen Kai's teeth before, but never had given that much thought to them.
"Kai," Soobin spoke up. "Your teeth... Are they—"
"What?" Kai snapped back, a little too defensive over them. "Please, I know they're unusually sharp. The guys make fun of me over it enough, I don't need a fourth person added on," he rambled.
"That's not at all what I was going to say," Soobin argued back. "I was going to ask if they have anything to do with being a demon."
Kai gave him a surprised look.
"Oh, well, yeah? Obviously?" he confirmed it as if he'd expected Soobin to know that fact already.
"All demons have pretty sharp teeth. It's part of our basic anatomy."
Soobin nodded slowly, and yet... the strangest thought popped into his mind.
Hadn't Jun's canines been looking a little pointy recently?
"It's funny... you know," Soobin brought the topic up hesitantly, "Yeonjun's teeth almost make him look like..."
Kai raised an eyebrow at this.
"What?" he questioned. "What do you mean?"
Soobin blanked at this. Had Kai seriously never noticed? Or, was Soobin just crazy? When he really thought about it, Yeonjun's teeth were nothing compared to Kai's. Perhaps Soobin was overthinking something completely normal?
Meanwhile, Kai was staring at Soobin with confusion. From what he'd seen, Yeonjun's canines had always been flat as fuck. He definitely would have noticed something from the countless times Beomgyu had made fun of Kai by comparing his teeth to Jun's.
"Never mind," Soobin dismissed it. "I'm probably crazy. Don't listen to me."
Kai stared at the taller boy for a moment, seemingly mulling over something. He could tell Soobin was lying, as any regular demon could, but something about the way he'd avoided it made Kai incredibly intrigued.
"Forgive me for this," Kai spoke briefly, as if he'd set his mind to do something.
"Wha—"
Soobin's words were cut off as Kai moved, quick as lightning, and pinned Soobin down to the couch by his wrists.
The demon knelt over him threateningly, and gazed down at the now-shocked Soobin.
"Kai... why are you—"
"Shut up," Kai hissed at him, feeling Soobin try to break his wrists out of the younger's grip. Kai was practically a million times stronger than him, so naturally this effort was wasted.
Kai only held his resolve, a nagging guilty feeling blossoming as he saw Soobin's expression slowly shift from confusion into fear.
But he was determined to test something.
Kai felt Soobin's heart rate spike as the boy realized he was trapped, and soon enough...
"Yep, he's terrified,"
Kai thought as he sensed the emotion from the human below him. Fear, out of all emotions, was by far the easiest scent to identify.
He tightened his grip around Soobin's wrists, just as a show of power over him.
"K-Kai," Soobin squeaked out, his voice tiny and scared. "Whatever I did... please don't—"
"Did I not tell you to shut up?" Kai snapped at the boy.
He felt incredibly bad about it, seeing Soobin on the verge of tears, and considered stopping his experiment for a moment.
Maybe his hypothesis had been wrong?
Kai leaned down towards Soobin for a moment, holding eye contact as to intimidate him.
Soobin shut his eyes as the demon came closer, as if preparing for the worst.
But before Kai could even speak, he found himself yanked backwards by the collar of his shirt, almost choking him in the process.
"Who—?" Kai blurted out as he stumbled off of the couch and was literally pulled up to his feet.
He came face to face with Yeonjun, who stared at him with nothing more than seething rage in his eyes.
The demon nervously tried to pry his friend's hand away from his shirt collar. "Y-Yeonjun, I can explain—"
Kai gasped as a stinging pain erupted on his left cheek, seeing stars as a rather violent impact forced his head sideways.
"Shit, Jun!" Kai spoke, panicked, as he held a hand up to his hurting face, in disbelief that his best friend would ever slap him. "Really-"
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Yeonjun berated him.
Kai could only stare at him in terror.
"I... I'm sorry! I just wanted to see if I was right about something!" he blurted out in an attempt to save his own ass.
He couldn't even shove Yeonjun away, which was quite horrifying. Yeonjun had never been stronger than him.
"Never fucking touch him again," Yeonjun ordered, gripping Kai's shirt collar tighter than before.
"I thought you were asleep," Kai stuttered out, briefly catching sight of Yeonjun's sharp teeth as the boy delivered his threat.
"How did you... even know I was—"
"He was scared, you filthy bitch," Yeonjun spat back.
"What do you mean 'he was scared'...? You sensed it?" Kai asked as Yeonjun let go of his shirt collar, giving him an aggressive push to the side so he could walk over to Soobin.
Kai only watched in silence as he saw Yeonjun kneel next to Soobin on the couch, taking one of the boy's hands in his own and giving it a gentle squeeze.
The boy leaned towards Soobin's ear, whispering a few things that Kai couldn't understand.
The demon wasn't born yesterday, and thinking about it... even he could sense Soobin's fear by its scent.
Yeonjun, as far as he knew, lacked that ability completely.
Yet... Yeonjun's canines, in fact, did look sharper than they had been.
When Yeonjun hit him, he'd felt stronger than he had been before.
It was almost as if...
"Kai," Yeonjun's voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
"Leave. We want to be alone," he commanded the demon.
Kai, reluctant but not willing to argue, turned and hurried out of the room, closing the door to the hall behind him.
Meanwhile Yeonjun, kneeling next to the still shell shocked Soobin, lightly took the younger's face into his hands.
"Hey, Binnie, look at me," Yeonjun spoke softly to him, gently squeezing the boy's soft cheeks.
Soobin turned his gaze towards the elder, seemingly still a bit on edge after witnessing Yeonjun bitch slap and threaten his best friend.
"Soobin," Yeonjun gave him a gentle smile. "Are you okay?"
Soobin, dazed, was barely able to process both the question and the little cute smile that Yeonjun was giving him.
"Mhm," he hummed lightly, leaning close to the light haired boy. Soobin gently nudged Yeonjun's nose with his own as a second response.
Yeonjun grinned as he felt Soobin's fear begin to fade into a dull happiness.
"That's good, baby," Yeonjun replied, not even taking a moment to think about how he knew Soobin was happier.
And thus he wrapped Soobin up in a big hug, letting all other thoughts drift away.
