After riding waves for the entire afternoon, I head in to shore and back to Bessie. I lay my board on the sand in front of my van, thankful that I can still ride it.
Stripping off my wetsuit, leaving me in my bikini, I set up the outside shower. It consists of a bag of water that has been heated by the sun, using solar energy, and a small shower head.
I stand under it and wash the salt and sand out of my hair and off my body. I use my favourite shampoo and conditioner, by Aussie—it's expensive, but I love how it smells, and it gives me gorgeous beach waves in my hair as well: win-win situation, really.
Reiley and the others are still out there, catching a few more waves as the swell dies down.
As I'm finishing my shower, I see Reiley on the beach, getting out of his wetsuit. I watch intently to see him peel it off his torso and reveal godly abs...but he's wearing a rash vest underneath his wetsuit. Wrapping a towel around his waist, he peels his wetsuit off his legs and pulls up a pair of boardshorts.
I blush at myself and turn away from him. The water's running out now, the bag slowly emptying, so I finish up my shower pretty quick, washing the rest of the soap suds off my body.
Jumping inside my van, and drawing the curtains shut, I rapidly change out of my bikini and into a lilac tee and soft, cotton shorts. I drag a hairbrush through my wet hair and throw it up in a messy bun for now, keeping it out of the way.
Next, I stick the kettle on to boil and set out two mugs. Anticipation begins to bubble inside of me, and I find myself arranging and rearranging the cushions on my bed.
Other than the driver and passenger seats, I have two woven-wooden chairs that I alternate between outside my van and inside, at the foldaway table. I couldn't decide whether Reiley would want to sit in or out.
I'll give him the option; I nod to myself.
"Why am I stressing out so much, Bessie?" I ask wonderingly.
"Skye?" Reiley knocked on the glass of one of the side windows.
"Hi!" I open the side door.
"Hey." He pushes his hair away from his face, a grin on his face, "You enjoy the surf today?"
"Ugh, I loved it!" I exclaim and feel all the anxiety melt away; everything just seems so easy when I'm with him.
I'm about to ask him whether he wants to sit in or out before he steps in.
"Nice place." He appreciates, looking around him.
"Thanks." I smile, turning back to the stove, and grabbing the coffee, sugar out of a cupboard and almond milk out of my minifridge, "It took me a while to do Bessie up. But it was fun, you know?"
"Bessie?" Reiley echoes, "You named your van?"
"Yeah," I shrug a shoulder, not looking at him, "I'm sorry but I only have almond milk...you could have black coffee?"
"No, that's fine." He steps next to me, "I actually like the taste of almond milk."
"Really?" I raise an eyebrow; "Not many people do."
"Yeah, well, Sophie is also lactose intolerant, so I'm used to the taste of it." He explains, leaning on my kitchen worktop, face close to my shoulder.
Either him and Sophie hang out a hell of a lot, or they're dating, I deduce quickly.
I nod, "One or two sugars?"
"One and a half." He grins, and winks at me when I throw a dirty look his way.
I dump two sugar cubes in his coffee cup.
The kettle whistles, the water boiled, and I'm about to reach and grab it, before Reiley grabs it.
"I thought me losing the bet meant that I made the coffee?" I frown, as he pours it into the mugs.
He shrugs, "I didn't want you to burn yourself."
"You know I'm 22, not two, right?" I check, unimpressed.
"Yeah, I know." He sets the kettle back on the stove.
"Good." I tell him, and pour in almond milk, before handing his to him, "Do you wanna sit outside, or in?"
"Thanks. In is fine." He settles himself on the edge of my bed.
"Oh, I was gonna grab the chairs and bring them inside..." I stutter; he's sat on my bed. I have a sexy, Greek god of hotness sat on my bed.
"You have a comfy bed." He notices, making himself comfortable.
"How's the coffee?" I blurt out, hovering by the kitchen.
"It's good, thanks. Not as good as I can make, but still good." He mocks, taking another mouthful.
"Sorry that I'm not quite up to barista level." I huff, folding an arm across my body.
Chill the heck out, Skye! I silently screaming at myself. He's just a guy you met the other night, and you're just a girl he met the other night – nothing more, nothing less.
"So, Skye, tell me something about yourself." Reiley demands, looking up to meet my eyes.
"Erm...I love music." I say, nodding my head, "That's why the only tech I have is my iPod."
"Favourite song?" He asks.
"Don't have one." I smile, "They are too many great songs to pick just one. What's your favourite song?"
"I don't have just one favourite...but one of my favourites is 'I Lived' by One Republic, it's all about living every day to the max, and doing everything you can whilst you can." He explains and pulls out his phone.
"I've never heard it." I admit, though find myself instantly wanting to listen to it.
"I guessed from the blank expression on your face." He smirks, "So I'll play it on my phone."
"Do you want me to hook it up to the van's speakers?" I ask.
"Yeah, sure." He hands me the phone and I plug it into the cable linked up to the radio.
Instantly, the song starts playing, sounding great through the speakers. Despite not having heard the song, I know that One Republic have a really nice sound to them, and they've done a couple of great collabs with Kygo, so they must be good.
"Hope when you take that jump
You don't fear the fall
Hope when the water rises
You built a wall
Hope when the crowd screams out
They're screaming your name
Hope if everybody runs
You choose to stay"
Right now, Reiley and are now both sat on my bed, just listening to the song in silence, drinking our coffees.
"Hope that you fall in love
And it hurts so bad (Yeah)
The only way you can know
You gave it all you had
And I hope that you don't suffer
But take the pain
Hope when the moment comes,
You'll say
I, I did it all
I, I did it all
I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places, the things that I did
Yeah with every broken bone
I swear I lived"
"I like it." I tell Reiley, "If I could be bothered to find a CD with it on, and a library computer that has iTunes, I'd load it up to my iPod."
He laughs lightly, "Fair enough...but I know that I'd like to say at the end of the day that I lived—like the song says."
I'd like to say the same too...
"Now tell me something about you." I turn to him, bringing my knee up onto the bed between us, and my knee brushes his thigh...sending a faint blush to my cheeks.
"Not much to tell." He shrugs, "I love surfing and just about any other sport on the water."
"This is where you tell me you own a superyacht, right?" I laugh, finishing the last of my coffee.
He laughs too, but a little awkwardly. "Cole's got a RHIB—reinforced hull inflatable boat—but that's about it."
"I know what RHIB stands for." I roll my eyes at him.
"Just making sure." He raised his hands in mock defence.
"You know you shouldn't've cut Cole off on that wave," I tell him, "It was kind of a dick move."
Reiley brushes that off with a wave of his hand, "You were pretty good out there today."
"Thanks." I wrinkle my nose up, smelling something burning.
I spring to my feet, and find that the stove ring I'd used for the kettle had been left on, and a cloth was now burning slightly.
"No, no, no!" I rush over to it, and pick up the non-burning end of it, and dump it in the sink, before turning the tap on, dampening the flames.
"Great." I frown, wafting the smoke now in my van.
Reiley stands up from my bed, opens the door and steps out.
After whispering an apology to Bessie, I step out as well.
"I guess I should be off now." Reiley shuffles uncomfortably, hands in his boardshort pockets.
"No, it's fine, Reiley – I must've forgotten to turn it off, it's not your fault." I bite my lip, "It's just a good thing I noticed it when I did, or who knows what might've happened to Bessie..."
"No," He insists, "I've got a shift at the Oasis, so I really have to go."
"Oh." My face falls, "That's fine."
"I'll see you around, Skye – and thanks for the coffee!" He calls back to me, as he walks off down to the beach.
"Bye." I wave awkwardly and let out a breath I didn't realise I was holding.
In order to air Bessie, I go and open all of the windows and doors, before sinking down into my woven chair.
Reiley wants to be able to say that he lived, and I'm pretty sure that he is living it, every moment of every day...but I highly doubt that I'll be able to say that I lived – after all, I've not exactly achieved much in the two decades and a bit that consist of my life.
Actually, I think that Cole, and Sophie, and Kai would be able to say that they lived as well; they all seem to have fun all the time.
Reiley's friends are getting out of the sea now, walking down the beach. None of them see me sat up here on my own with my van, but that might just be because I sink into my chair as much as possible when they walk past, also because none of them know that I'm living out of a van. I'm okay with that, for now; I don't want them to react the same way that Reiley did when I first told him that I'm staying in a campervan, when he thought that I was just another one of those 'van life' girls.
To be fair, maybe I could be able to say that I lived; I have travelled alone across the States, alone in my van, and now I'm in California, surfing and soaking up the sun – is that classed as living every day to the maximum?
Sure, I basically live outside. And I wake up and go to sleep in sync with the sunrise/sunset. I was living a simple life, living off my allowance from my parents and granny, not that ever used it that much – whenever I had to go shopping, I was very economical about it, which is weird to think, when I used to be a borderline shopaholic.
My mouth stretches wide in a yawn, and I decide that Bessie has had enough time to be cleared of smoke, so I carry my chairs inside, and draw the curtains tightly shut.
My van smells like burnt coffee, salt, sand, and sandalwood—the sandalwood being what Reiley must smell like...and damn, it smells good.
I step out of my clothes and throw on an oversized t-shirt to sleep in, before crawling into bed.
Sleep is slowly pulling me downwards, but then I get a jolt to my stomach and rush up out of bed; Reiley left his phone here.
I consider going to the Oasis Moon, but I'm beginning to feel exhaustion from today's surfing, so I leave it and go back to bed, deciding that I can take it to him tomorrow.
Smiling to myself sleepily, I also decide that today, out there on the ocean, surfing those waves (and doing so brilliantly, if I might add) ...today I lived.
I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places, the things that I did
Yeah with every broken bone
I swear I lived
