Steve POV

I had just finished my latest mission and was making my way back home. The mission had been a success so everyone was happy. It was late so I knew my amazing wife Y/N and our two sons, James 4 and Lucas 7 months would all be asleep. I hated going away on so many missions, don't get me wrong I do love my job and being an avenger but I hated being away from my family so much and missing out on my kids growing. Whenever I knew I had a mission, I arranged a few of the others to keep an eye on Y/N and the boys. I finally reached our family house. All the lights were out and the house was in complete darkness. I tried to be as quiet as I could while opening the door then closing it and locking it once I was inside. I quietly took off my jacket and shoes then made my way up the carpeted stairs. Once upstairs, I quietly checked in on James, he was sound asleep cuddled into one of his favorite teddy bears I had bought for him. I smiled before walking out of James' room and then into the nursery to check in on Lucas. I heard a few baby noises so I guessed he must have woken up. I carefully lifted him up.

"Hey buddy, you should be asleep, it's late" I said smiling at Lucas.

He looked up at me with his blue eyes then yawned. I noticed Y/N had left some milk in a bottle from an earlier feed. I picked the bottle up then held it to Lucas to see if he was hungry. He took a drink and slowly began to fall back asleep again. I cradled him for a little bit before placing him back in his crib and tucking him in. I quickly changed for bed. I felt so at ease being back home. I began to take in all the smells and scents I had come to miss so much. I got into mine and Y/N's shared bed. She was asleep in her side of the bed but I had noticed she was facing my side and was cuddling one of my shirts, I couldn't help but smile. I pulled the duvet over myself then gently pulled Y/N close to me and kissed her head. 

"Hmmm" Y/N said stirring in her sleep.

"Shhh sweetheart it's okay, it's only me, I'm back home again" I whispered.

"Missed you" Y/N whispered in her sleep.

"I've missed you all too" I whispered. 

I wasn't too sure if Y/N really knew I was home or if she was even awake or just dreaming. I cuddled into her and fell into a peaceful sleep.

The next morning I had woken up early as I normally do. I decided not to go for my usual morning run just yet. I was still feeling bit tired and just wanted to sleep and be with my family. I began to fall back asleep again and was almost asleep until I heard Lucas crying. Y/N was still in a deep sleep so I got up and made my way into the nursery. I fed Lucas and then changed his nappy. I was debating about going back to bed but I knew Y/N would be up soon followed by James. I planned on spending as much time with them all as I could. I carefully placed Lucas in his baby bouncer chair and put on some cartoons for him to watch, I made sure the tv wasn't too loud as I didn't want to wake up Y/N or James. I headed back into the kitchen to make a start to James, Y/N and my own breakfast. I kept an eye on Lucas, making sure he was okay and settled. 

I had just finished making pancakes and placed them on a plate and then put the plate down on the table. Then all I heard was footsteps coming down the stairs and making their way into the living room.

"Lucas ? How did you get down here ? Is mummy (mommy) up ?" I heard James asking Lucas even though he knew he couldn't talk yet.

"Morning buddy" I said smiling as I made my way out of the kitchen and towards my two sons.

"Daddy !" James shouted happily as he ran over to me. I caught him and embraced him in a hug.

"Hey shhh buddy we don't wanna wake up your mum (mom) now do you ?" I asked

"No sorry daddy, but when did you come home ?" James asked

"Late, during the night. Now tell me, have you been a good boy and looking out for mum (mom) and Lucas and helping them ?" I asked 

"Yep and guess what daddy" James replied

"What little man ?" I answered him

"No bad guys have been  here or near us" James told me with a huge smile like he was proud. I had told and asked him to help Y/N and be a good boy and also to help look after Lucas too. 

"That's great, your doing a terrific job, I am so proud of you" I smiled.

James and I had decided to start eating our own breakfasts while Y/N was still asleep. We both kept an eye on Lucas making sure he was okay. 

Your POV

You had woken up around your normal time for waking up but something felt......different. The upstairs where you were, felt too quiet. Normally you would hear James talking to Lucas or hear James' tv on with the cartoons but there was nothing. You got up and made your way to James' room but found it empty. You thought this was odd since he never went downstairs without you. You decide to try the nursery and make your way in. When you see the nursery empty and the crib, you feel your stomach drop and your heart beating faster. You ran out the nursery and then downstairs shouting out both your son's names hoping for an answer.

"James ? Lucas ?" You yell.

"In here mummy" You hear James yell happily, calling from the kitchen. 

You make your way threw to the kitchen at a speedy pace. As you look, you see Lucas' baby bouncer chair but it's empty. You suddenly hear happy baby giggles and squeals coming from the kitchen. You look over and see that a man has Lucas on his knee. You approach the kitchen slowly scared of however many others there maybe. 

James came out of the kitchen and smiled up at you.

"James, baby are you okay ?" You ask him worried. He looks at you confused.

"Of course I am mummy (mommy) but come see ! Daddy came home !" James cheered happily.

Steve came home ? You had no idea. You walked into kitchen and relaxed almost instantly. 

"You okay sweetheart ?" Steve asked you with a worried look. 

"I am now yeah, I woke up and never heard any of the boys and then when I saw them gone I panicked" You told him as you sat down.

"I am so sorry, I didn't want to wake you, you looked peaceful sleeping and this little man woke up after me" Steve said holding Lucas up and kissing his cheek.

"And then I got up and saw daddy was home" James said entering the conversation.

"When did-" You begin to ask but Steve cuts you off knowing exactly what you were about to ask.

"Late, during the night, I tried to be quiet, I spoke to you when I was cuddling you but I wasn't sure if you were awake or dreaming" Steve said smiling at you.

You began to eat your own breakfast though you didn't really eat much as you weren't a big eater. 

"I can't believe how big this little cutie has gotten" Steve said as he tickled Lucas, causing Lucas to giggle adorably.

"Daddy can we go to the park today and take a football (soccer ball) with us please ?" James asked Steve, his voice full of hope.

"Only if it's okay with your mummy (mommy)" Steve told James

Suddenly you had all three of your boys looking at you, giving you their best puppy dog eyes and pleading look. 

"Can we mummy (mommy) please ?" James asked you.

"Well you have been a good boy while your daddy has been gone and we always do something as a family, why don't we take a picnic with us too and maybe there at the park we can get ice cream" You smile at your son.

"YES ! Thank you mummy (mommy) !" James said as he ran over to hug you. You hugged him back.

"Do you need help getting ready ?" You asked James

"No, I'll be okay, I know what I want to wear anyway" James said as he began making his way upstairs.

You began to put all the used dishes in the dishwasher when Steve walked over to you. 

"Hey, I missed you a lot" Steve said, standing behind you.

"I know and we all missed you so much too" You told him.

Steve held Lucas in one arm then used his free one to gently pull you in close so he was holding you too. Steve then placed a sweet soft gentle kiss to your forehead. 

"Come on we best get ready" You said smiling at both Steve and Lucas. 

"I don't mind getting Lucas ready if you wanna make up the picnic" Steve offered.

"Okay sure" You smiled

You sat happily on a swing with Lucas on your knee, watching Steve and James playing happily. 

"Don't worry baby, one day you will be able to join in with them" You told Lucas.

Lucas just smiled and flapped his arms about. 

You had tried to put Lucas in one of the baby swings and pushed him gently but he didn't seem to like it so instead you sat him on your knee. 

You ended up spending most of the day there at the park, having fun and eating ice cream. You even managed to find a nice little cafe to have your dinner at. It was about 7 or just after 7 at night when you had arrived back home. Steve had lifted James, who had fallen asleep on the way home, and carried him inside while you got Lucas. 

Luckily both boys were changed for bed and fell asleep quite quickly. 

Steve POV

I carried James up to his room. I didn't want to but I had to wake him so that he could get changed and ready for bed. I guess being out all day in the sun and all the running around really tired him out. 

"Hey little guy, I need you to wake up and change for bed" I said softly trying to wake James up.

"Hmmm" James said in a tired voice

I helped James change for bed in no time at all. 

"Daddy" James said as I was about to get up off his bed once I'd tucked him in.

"Yeah buddy ?" I asked him wondering what he wanted.

"Will you still be here tomorrow when I get up ?" James asked.

"Yeah, I mean I will have to go into work at the compound but I'll still be here" I smiled then kissed his head.

James fell asleep instantly. Normally he loved a story at bedtime but I guess not tonight. 

I went back downstairs where I saw Y/N sat on the couch waiting for me to join here.

"Hey, James manage to wake up and change okay ?" she asked.

"Yeah he woke up, I helped him change but he's spark out now" I told her.

Y/N moved over and I sat behind her then held her close. 

"I've missed you holding me and being this close to you" Y/N said, her eyes closed with a sweet smile on her lips.

"You know we should take one of the other's up on their offer" I suggested

"What offer ?" Y/N asked confused

"A few have offered to watch the boys sometime to give you and I some alone time" I said.

"I think James would settle fine, Lucas I'm not too sure just yet" Y/N replied.

We talked for a bit, catching up on things that had happened. We sat in a comfortable silence. I began to drift off into my own thoughts. I had no idea what I did to be this lucky.

"What are you thinking about ?" Y/N's soft voice asked

"Just wondering how and when I managed to get so lucky and how I wouldn't change any of this, you or the boys for anything" I smiled and kissed Y/N's head.

"It's getting late, let's head up to bed now" Y/N suggested.

I agreed and we both went up to our shared bedroom. I held Y/N close to me and she fell asleep quite quickly. I smiled to myself before allowing myself to fall into a deep, peaceful sleep.
