He Comes Home From A Mission, You Have A Surprise For Him Steve X Reader

Steve POV

I had just left the S.H.I.E.L.D compound after completing another successful mission. I had been gone for a good 8-9 months. It was a long mission. One of the longest missions I have done yet. I drove home on my bike. I couldn't wait to get back to  Y/N. I hope she doesn't think anything bad has happened to me, I had to cut contact with everyone for a bit. Including Y/N as much as it hurt not talking to her or hearing her sweet voice telling me how much she missed me and couldn't wait till I was home and to make sure I came home safely. Our last phone call ended very weird I'm not even sure what had happened. 

Flashback

"Hey  sweetheart, how are you doing ? Are you feeling better ?" I asked Y/N. She was a little bit unwell before I had left. I tried to persuade her to see one of the doctors but she insisted it was just a viral or bug going around and she was unfortunate to have caught it.

"Hey, I'm doing a little better thanks, did you make it there safely ?" She replies and asks her own question.

"I did, we all made it here safe" I was currently on my mission with Nat, Bucky and Sam. 

"That's good to hear, I'm gonna miss you so much while your gone" Y/N says and I can hear just how upset she sounds threw the phone.

"Hey I'm gonna be back in no time at all I promise you" I say reassuring her.

"Listen Steve, there's something important that I need to tell you" Y/N says and I can from the tone in her voice it's serious.

"Okay, tell me" I say as I wait for her to continue.

"Okay but please don't be mad when I tell you" Y/N practically begs threw the phone. 

Mad ? Why would I ever have any reason to be mad at her ? 

"Why would I be mad at you ?" I ask

"I went to the doctor today to get something to try and help calm my sickness down" She begins to explain.

"Okay, and  ? what happened ?"  I press on wanting to know more and where this was going

"He did a test while I was there-" Then suddenly the line went dead. Dead like it had been cut. I knew Y/N and I knew she wouldn't start something like that without finishing the story.

End Of Flashback

I was a bit worried especially since I had no idea what kind of test or tests she'd had done while I was gone. It hurt even more that I couldn't call to find out if she was okay or needed me back. It was around 08:00 am in the morning when I arrived home. I opened the door quietly, it was still early and I didn't want to disturb Y/N, especially if she was still asleep. I wanted this to be a surprise for her. I was confused as I heard someone awake and in the kitchen. 

"Y/N ?" I called her name as I walked threw our shared house.

"Steve, your home ?" She asked either shocked or in disbelief

"Yeah I am, why are you up early ?" I asked confused. 

What really caught my attention was the baby bottle filled with baby formula in her hands.

"Are you babysitting for someone ?" I ask as I motion towards the bottle. 

"There's someone you need to meet, follow me but please be quiet" Y/N asks. 

I nod and follow her upstairs. She leads me into one of our spare rooms which had now been decorated.... pink and turned into a nursery ?? 

I watch Y/N as she quietly walks over to the baby crib. She motions for me to walk over beside her so I do. 

"Steve, I'd like you to meet Ruby, your daughter" Y/N says which floors me. 

We both look down to the tiny sleeping bundle. 

"My.....what ?" I ask shocked

"She's yours Steve, I tried to tell you but the phone went dead then I never heard from you" Y/N explains.

"How old is she ?" I ask still looking down at the sleeping bundle.

"Just over one month, I was two when you left and you've been gone for eight months" Y/N and I could hear how upset she was.

"So you named her ?" I ask taking my eyes off the sleeping bundle to look at Y/N

"Ruby - Natalia Rogers" Y/N replies.

"You should have told me, you could have written or gotten in contact some how to let me know" I said in a sharp tone

"The phone went dead when I tried to tell you, when I told the others, Tony, Clint, Bruce, Wanda and Fury, I was told I couldn't as there was to be no more contact until after the mission. I couldn't write because I didn't know where in the world you were" Y/N pointed out. She really had a strong point there. Our location was kept top secret.

I wanted to say something else but before I could a small noise stopped me. I looked back down into the crib and saw that the baby, Ruby had woken up. She just stared up at me as I continued to look down at her. 

"She's hungry, it's her feeding time. Do you want..." Y/N began to ask.

I knew what she was going to ask. I wanted to, I really did but I just couldn't. I shook my head and ran out. I left Y/N there alone with the baby. Once outside, I texted all the others to meet me at Stark Tower asap. I jumped back on my bike and made my way there. Once there, I parked my bike in my usual spot then marched my way inside. I rode the elevator up to the lounge where most of the team was waiting. 

"Steve ? What's wrong ?" Bucky asked

"Y/N has had my daughter, while I was gone on the mission" I say

I notice that Tony, Bruce, Clint or Wanda aren't surprised by this but why would they be ? 

"Congratulations ! What's her name ? When do we get to meet her ?" Nat asked excited

"Some of the team already have, just ask Tony, Bruce, Clint and Wanda" I say threw gritted teeth.

"I didn't know she was even carrying your baby before we left ?" Sam said confused

"I didn't either, she almost told me on the phone but the line went dead and then we were told there was to be no more contact" I say answering Sam's confused question

"Look she tried to tell you, she really did want too, hell she was scared !" Tony snaps at me

"I should have been told, I should have been there present at the birth" I hit back

"Oh no cap, you really didn't want to see that" Clint begins

"You were all present for that too ?!" I snap practically shouting now

"She kinda had Ruby a little bit earlier than the due date the doctor gave her, she almost broke my hand too" Clint complained

"Look Cap, you still have her, she loves you, there was nothing she could have done to tell you, she wanted too, we all wanted her too but Fury refused any contact until after the mission, we all tried to get him to reconsider given the situation. All we did was help her and support her. She really did want you there, she even spoke to Ruby when she was carrying her telling her about how her daddy was a superhero out saving the world and mostly about how you were her hero" Wanda said bringing herself into the conversation.

"We really did try with fury, I even threatened him that I would let Bruce set the Hulk free" Tony said trying to add some humor to the situation

"Have you seen the baby yet ? Who does she look like ?" Nat asked very eager

"Exactly like her dad" Clint said answering Nat's question

"She was asleep when Y/N showed her to me then she woke up, Y/N asked if I wanted to feed her but I just ran out and came here" I explain

"Cap you have something to go home for, you have a family to love and protect, I suggest you go home to them" Tony says in a more serious tone. 

I look around the others who all agree with Tony. I realise they're right. I run out and begin to make my way back home. 

Back at the house, I run straight upstairs to the nursery and find Y/N sitting in a rocking chair feeding our little daughter. I take in Y/N's appearance. She looked tired, her hair is a little messy. I also notice that she has been crying. I feel a part of me break knowing I caused her to cry. 

"Y/N" I say walking into the nursery and over to the chair.

Y/N looks up at me. 

"Why don't you let me take over here and you got catch up on some sleep" I offer.

"Are you sure you want too ? Your not gonna leave us ?" Y/N asks

"Of course I'm not, I know it wasn't your fault. I don't blame you at all and I'm not going anywhere" I say with a small smile

Y/N smiles before carefully getting up. She walks over to me and carefully places Ruby in my arms. 

"Please be careful with her, don't feed her too much at once give her little breaks" Y/N says

"I'll look after her, you need to get some rest, take as much time as you want" I tell her before giving her a kiss to her forehead. 

Y/N soon leaves the nursery and heads to our bedroom. I look down at Ruby who was looking up at me again. I smiled down at her. 

"Hey baby girl, I'm your daddy. Don't worry, mummy (mommy) is just gonna catch up on some sleep so I guess that gives us time to get to know each other" I smile down at her as I feed her. 

Clint wasn't lying when he said she looks like me, she has my hair colour, blue eyes like me, she does have Y/N's nose and mouth shape.

A few days later once everyone was relaxed from the mission, Tony held a little get together at his where all the team was invited to go. I went along with Y/N and of course we took Ruby so all the others could meet her. 

Bad idea.

Once Nat got to hold Ruby, it was hard to get her back unless Ruby needed a nappy (diaper) change. I had learned how to change them, Y/N had taught me so much. I'm still upset I missed Ruby's birth but I hoped we would have more kids in the future and I could be present at their birth.

Y/N looks so much better now that I am home and able to help out and also do some night feeds. 

"Hey Cap, sorry to disturb you but little Ruby here wants her daddy....for now" Nat said with a smile on her face. She handed Ruby over to me and I took her in my arms.

"What's wrong with daddies little sweetheart ?" I ask Ruby and smile at her. Yes I know she can't talk or answer me just yet. 

"So Cap I was thinking, she's gonna be a little Avenger, maybe I should begin making her a suit" Tony says coming over to us

"Not gonna happen, she's not getting on the team or gonna be in any kind of danger ever" I tell him

"Oh Cap, what are you gonna do when she's older and gets a boyfriend ?" Bucky asks

"Nothing" I reply

Everyone looks at me confused

"No one is getting near my girl, there isn't gonna be any guy that's gonna be good enough for her" I inform them. We all laugh but a part of me thinks I was being honest with them. 

We all soon head home for the evening. I let Y/N get changed and ready for bed while I change Ruby and settle her down with her bottle for the night. 

"Sweet dreams princess" I whisper to her as I carefully place her in her crib and pull her comforter over her.
