Chapter Two
I yawned awake when the soothing rocking of the giant, moving box slowed. I reached my paws out in front of me to stretch my tired limbs. I could feel my siblings also waking up, and rolling away from our puppy pile.
When the giant contraptions of sorts stopped I felt the beast from earlier pick up my home. It placed it on what I imagined was the ground. In the apparently new environment, I could smell a crisp and earthy smell. A slight breeze tickled the fluff on my tummy and my back was warmed by comforting rays of sun.
I didn't get to enjoy this feeling for long, because the creature picked up the box again and kept ambling towards who knows what. I was pretty sure that he was dragging Mother along too.
Now that, my family and I were somewhere else with less confusing smells, I was able to detect the creature's musk. He smelled sharply of dogs, and he had a tang of a bitter liquid. He also carried a hint of a burned plant of sorts. The whole concoction of overpowering smells made me noxious, and I knew my siblings felt similarly.
As he continued to move at an even pace, I could feel slight changes in the environment. At one point, he stopped as if to move something, and the wind quickly died out, when he put it back. The new place smelled of the creature's odd musk and mildew.
Again, after a few seconds, my surroundings changed. Like before the animal stopped to move something and we were somewhere else. There was no way to describe this new room except as terrifyingly awful!
A wave of putrid scents flooded my nostrils, and I tensed up. There were clearly many other dogs here, based on the fear scent and odor of feces. These relatives of mine, didn't like the creature, cause once they realized he was there, I smelled their anger and frustration spike.
I could identify the milky aroma Mother carried, leading me to realize at least a few of the dogs were mothers or pups. I wondered if they had been snatched from their homes too.
I started shaking violently and blindly struggled to find my siblings in our den. Only yesterday, it had seemed so small, but now it felt like it was miles across.
Everything about this new place was wrong! I only had a slight bit of relief when I toppled into my little brother. We curled together in a protected heap, waiting for the other two pups to follow suit. I had never been so grateful in my short life, that I couldn't see nor hear!
The being walked across the evil room, and stopped in front of something. He opened it and one by one, he placed my sister and brothers in it. When he grabbed me, I wriggled trying to get free. I didn't want to be stuck here! His calloused hands remained their strong grip, and I was set on a slab of hard plastic.
I tried to find an corner that I could hide in, but instead of firm walls, like my last home, it had cold metal bars with and inch of space in between each one.
The whole cage shook as Mother was set in it too. She gently corralled us so she would lay on us. She flopped down in submission, and I could only imagine that she felt like a failure. But it wasn't her fault we were here, this creature had just been too strong for her.
The cage moved again, and I knew we had been shut in, and trapped.
