Chapter Eight
After what I can only assume was hours, the constant movement of the vehicle stopped. My siblings all suddenly jump up from where they were napping, and I casually yawn at them. I couldn't sleep. Or more like, I wouldn't sleep. Someone had to stand guard, to make sure we didn't all die, why not me.
It was like a flip was switched and suddenly they all came to reality. They look around and realize it wasn't just a dream. Blondey had really snatched us away from Mother, and trapped up in a cage of our own.
"Noooo," Basil howled. His voice was screechy and fearful. As if called forth by the sound, Bloody opened the door of the machine and lifted out the kennel. Immediately, I was overcome with strange and slightly familiar smells. It reminded me of the first few days of my life.
We were back in the city!
Able to see now, I raised my head to look through the slits in the cage. The ground was covered in a hard black looking floor, and upon it raced vehicles, like the one that had driven us here. They rushed past us, and with it, acrid fumes followed. We stood on the side of the black path and could see that on the other side of the path were giant buildings.
Blondey carried the cage across the street and we entered a wide building. I could smell many animals. Some were dogs and some were other animals. The walls were white and a few chairs were scattered around the room. To my amazement, most of the dogs were sitting devotedly next to a human and would occasionally bark.
"Don't touch my beloved human," a fluffy small dog demanded.
"Stay away from mine too!" another warned.
I didn't get why they were so protective of the awful beast that we called humans. After what I had seen, in the Capture Room (which is what I started thinking of as the place where Mother was), I knew humans were vile creatures. They abused my kind, they stole us away from our homes on the street, and locked us in small cages. Why were these dogs so happy?
Blondey put down the cage by an empty chair and walked off. The small dog that had previously barked at us, curiously gazed at us.
"First trip to the vet?" she asked, in a cheerful rush. I nodded my head. "Ah, I see. Well just a warning, if they poke you with a sharp stick don't bite them, or else you won't get a treat."
"Treat!" a different dog that closely resembled the first barked. "Treat? Treat! I love treats!"
"Oh we know." The first dog rolled her eyes. Now stop your blubbering Edward." The second dog, Edward, rolled over submissively.
I felt Basil shift slightly, from behind me. He poked his head part way through the cage bars, with a confused expression. "Edward? What a strange name," he commented, shyly.
"What do you mean?" said Edward. "My human gave it to me. So therefore it's perfectly normal," he added, a little bit defensively.
My sister shook her head at him. "Really?" she said sceptical. "Because doesn't your mother or father give you a name, normally, not these evil beings."
The first dog let out a laugh. "Wow sweetie, funny joke." My siblings and I looked at her confused. "Oh wow you don't know, do you?" We shook our heads. "Well my name is Shirley! What are yours?" she asked.
"I'm Night," my eldest brother responded. "This is Prairie, Basil, and Lark," he told Shirley. Individually we nodded our heads when he said our names.
Edward cocked his head to the side. "What strange names. And you said your parents gave them to you?"
"Just our mother," I spoke up.
"Hmm, interesting," Shirley said. "You see, one day when you get a human of your own-"
"Nope!" Night interrupted her. "I don't want a human! They are awful!" The two small dogs gasped disbelieving.
"Not at all!" Shirley yelped. "They feed you, bath you, and even give your name, as well as the occasional treat."
"Yum, treats," Edward sighed.
I glanced at my siblings and a signal passed between us. We weren't going to tell these dogs anything, because all they would do was argue and get off topic. If we wanted to learn about the world outside the Capture Room, then we better just listen.
"Sugar, as I was saying, when you get a human, you will get a normal name," Shirley told us. Night rolled his eyes ever so slightly and growled a little every time she said human. "And humans are wonderful, just to be clear. You will love yours, like me and Edward love ours!"
I was about to ask a question, when I heard footsteps behind us. I looked around, to see Blondey pick up the cage and she started to carry us away from Shirley and Edward.
"Now remember what I said!" Shirley barked after us. "Don't do anything stupid, or else you won't get a treat." She started to say something else but we didn't catch it in time, because Blondey had walked into a new room and closed the door.
