Chapter 29

"What did you just say?" Adam asks as he thought for sure his heart had stopped beating.

"I said. That I would probably ask you to marry me once your divorce is final." Tim says and then smiles.

"But .. but I don't even know if he's filed yet or not." Adam says. "Are you being serious?"

"Yes, I'm being totally serious. And why wait on him to file? You can file for divorce yourself." Tim says. "Don't let him get the satisfaction in divorcing you. Beat him to the punch."

"But how can I file for divorce stuck in here?" Adam asks.

"Maybe Chance can get a lawyer for you." Tim shrugs. "Wouldn't hurt to check in on it."

"You're right." Adam nods. "I will, ASAP."

"We wouldn't be able to have a big fancy wedding but they do have a chapel here with a preacher. And I wouldn't be able to give you the little white frame house with the garden. But if you'd have me, I would love to marry you." Tim says as he stares into Adam's blue eyes.

"You're being totally serious aren't you." Adam states as he sits up and looks at Tim.

"Honey, I'm being dead serious." Tim replies. "Adam, will you marry me?"

Adam giggles and covers his mouth.

"Oh, my God." He whispers. "Yes! Yes, Tim, I'll marry you."

Adam grabs Tim into a tight hug.

"Did my ears deceive me?" Avi asks from the cell door. "Did yall just get engaged?"

"Yeah, yeah, I guess we did." Adam giggles with excitement.

"HOLY MOLY!" Avi shouts out. "HEY YALL, FOUST AND RUPP ARE ENGAGED!!" He announces loudly.

Whoops and hollers echoes throughout the cell block.

"Did you hear that?" Rob asks as he and Chance walk up the stairs leading to the cell block.

"Tim and Adam are getting married? But Adam is still married." Chance says.

"Maybe we should figure out a quick way of getting him and Austin divorced." Rob chuckles.

"But how are they supposed to be able to pay for a lawyer? They don't have any money." Chance says as they reach the top of the stairs.

"Duh, you hire them one. You're rich." Rob says. "You don't even need this job. You just took a job here because you were bored and now you can't quit because of that green-eyed inmate that you fell in love with."

"Yeah, I could do that." Chance says as he bites his lip, deep in thought. "Don't say anything about it though. I want to surprise them."

Rob gives him a thumbs up as they near Tim and Adam's cell.

"I hear congratulations are in order." Chance says with a smile.

"Wow, news travels fast." Tim says with a smirk as he and Adam get dressed.

"Well, we couldn't help but hear Avi screaming to the top of lungs." Rob laughs.

"Yeah, who needs a loud speaker when you got Avi, right?" Adam laughs.

"Well, excuse the f*ck out of me." Avi says, crossing his arms. "I can't help but get excited. This is a prison, for God's sake, gloom and depression all around. We need something uplifting like a wedding to happen."

"Visitation is tomorrow. You think they'll have the balls to show up?" Rob asks.

"Who?" Chance asks.

"Austin and Chris." Rob answers.

"Don't matter if they show up or not. They're gonna look like idiots sitting at a table by themselves. I'll be at the table with Tim and Dena." Adam says with a smile. "My future husband and mother-in-law."

"She's going to be so excited." Tim smiles as he slides an arm around Adam's waist.

~~

The next morning, Tim and Adam headed for the showers. Several inmates congratulated them on their engagement.

The warm water soothed Tim's 'backside' enough that he hoped his mom wouldn't ask why he was limping slightly.

They had overslept and was running about thirty minutes late. By the time they got dressed and arrived at the gate, several inmates were already visiting with their families out in the yard.

"Do you see momma?" Tim asks as he scans the yard.

"There she is." Adam smiles and points. "But who is that with her?"

"Oh, my God. It looks like my sister, Emily." Tim says as he suddenly gets nervous. They hold hands as they walk across the yard to where Dena was sitting.

"There you are. I was about to wonder if you guys had gotten in trouble or something." Dena smiles as she stands up.

Tim locks eyes with the young lady with Dena. A shocked look came across the lady's face.

"Timothy?" The lady asks, a smile growing on her lips. "Oh, my God! Tim!" All the bad feelings from the past vanish as she runs around the table grabbing Tim into a bone crushing hug.

"Emily, if this ain't you, I'm in deep sh*t." Tim chuckles as they break their hug.

"Of course, it's me. You Goof Ball." Emily laughs.

"Well, it's been eight years." Tim chuckles. "You've changed."

"Speaking of changing. Timmy, you've put on a few pounds." Emily says as she looks at her brother. "You're not the skinny big brother that I remember."

"Well, there's not much to do but eat and sleep here. So yeah, I might have added some extra pounds." Tim chuckles.

"So how are you boys doing? I've missed you guys." Dena smiles as she hugs them both. "You look a lot happier than you did the last time I saw you."

"We are. The last time you saw us was a really bad time." Tim smiles shaking his head as they sit down at the table. "Oh, Emily, this is my cell mate and official boyfriend, Adam."

"Wow, nice job, Timmy. He's a cutie." Emily giggles as she shakes Adam's hand.

"Thanks." Adam chuckles as his cheeks redden.

"So, what's new? What's got you boys grinning ear to ear?" Dena laughs.

"Well, we got something to tell you, momma." Tim says as he takes Adam's hand under the table.

"Well, looking at those smiles on your faces it, it has to be good news." Dena says.

"It is. I've, uh, I've asked Adam to marry me after his divorce is final." Tim says as he bites his bottom lip with anticipation.

"And you said 'Yes', I hope." Dena smiles at Adam.

"Of course, I said, yes." Adam laughs.

Dena squeals as she jumps up and hugs Adam tightly.

Seeing that everything went well with the announcement, Tim turns his attention back to his sister.

"So, Sis. Do you have pictures of that good looking little boy of yours? The one you just so happened to name after me?" Tim smiles.

"Do I?" Emily giggles as she pulls out her phone and begins to show Tim pictures of his nephew.

"He's so precious." Tim says. "Uh, does he know about me?"

"Of course he knows about his Uncle Tim. I told him that you did something bad and that you were sent away." Emily says. "Do they allow children in here to visit?"

"Yeah, there's a lot of inmates that have kids that come to see them. Sometimes it looks like a daycare in here during visitation." Tim smiles.

"That's all I needed to hear." Emily smiles as she takes Tim by the hand. "I'm so sorry for these eight years lost between us."

"Don't be." Tim says, shaking his head. "I could have handled it differently, but I didn't. So, I have to pay for what I did. But, despite where I'm at, I'm very happy. I got great friends and I found someone that I want to spend the rest of my life with. Even though we will spend it behind bars."

"Will we be allowed to come to the wedding?" Emily asks.

"I think you have to get special permission from the governor. But I have pretty good ties with our dear Governor." Tim smiles.

"Good, cause I definitely don't want to miss it." Emily smiles.

"Foust, I don't appreciate you jumping on Austin the way you did." Chris says as he interrupts their visitation.

"I don't give a rat's ass what you appreciate, Rupp." Tim says as he turns his eyes toward the unwelcomed visitor. "You see this f*cking number on my chest? That's not for the amount of Girl Scout cookies I've sold. That means I've killed five d*mn people. Now, get the f*ck out of my face."

Emily gently squeezes her brother's hand in an attempt to calm him down.

"Just go away, Chris." Adam says. "No one asks you to come today."

"We need to talk, Adam. Come on, man. You're my brother." Chris pleads.

"That didn't seem to matter while you were screwing my husband." Adam replies.

"I know." Chris nods as he hangs his head. "And I'm so sorry. But, please, just ... can I just talk to you? Please?"

Adam glances around at Tim, meeting his eyes.

"It's totally up to you. Baby. I can have Chance escort him out if you don't want to talk to him." Tim says softly.

"No, that's okay. It will be alright. I actually have a few things to get off my chest." Adam says, leaning over and placing a kiss on Tim's cheek. "I'll be right back." He smiles down at Dena and Emily.

"I wonder where Austin is at?" Dena asks quietly.

"Who cares really. Probably too ashamed to show his face." Tim says in a low voice as he keeps a close eye on Adam.

~~

"So, are you going to tell me that this is all my fault? Or Austin's? Oh, I know. While I was out striking matches, poor little Austin needed comforting and you thought you would just be the Good Samaritan and help out. Right?" Adam says as he sits down at another table.

"No, it didn't happen that way." Chris says, shaking his head.

"Oh, really? That's not what Austin said. He said that he got lonely and you were there. Pretty much sums it up." Adam says coldly. "But you know what? I don't care. Chris, after yours and Austin's last visit, I tried to kill myself. Absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever done in my life."

"You what?" Chris asks, his face going pale.

"That's right. I hung myself in our cell. Tim saved me. If it weren't for him, I'd be dead right now. And for what? I also was on my way outta here. I practically had my feet outside of this place. But then I realized that I had no one waiting for me on the outside. So, I killed a man. Just so I could stay here." Adam says with a slight smile.

"Oh, my God." Chris says, rubbing his hands over his face. "Adam, I'm so sorry."

"Don't be. Cause you wanna know something else, Chris? You actually did me a favor. You took Austin off my hands and now I have Tim. And I couldn't be happier." Adam gives an honest smile. "So if my forgiveness is what you want? You got it. I forgive you and I wish you and Austin all the best. Now, if you'll excuse me."

Adam stands but Chris quickly grabs his hand.

"Can I still come visit you?" Chris asks.

"Of course you can. You're my brother." Adam smiles and gives Chris a quick hug before heading back to Tim and his family.

"Well?" Tim asks as Adam sits back down next to him, taking his hand.

"Actually, I think it went pretty well." Adam laughs. "I said what I wanted to say. And I feel good. I forgave them and wished them the best."

"Well, if it had been me? I would have clawed his f*cking eyes out." Emily says causing them to all laugh when Dena covers her ears.

"Excuse me, Mr. Rupp? Adam Rupp?" A male voice asks.

"Yes?" Adam answers as their attention is drawn to a man with gray hair and beard dressed in a very pricey three piece suit carrying a briefcase.

"My name is Sean Connery. It is my understanding that you are wanting to file for a divorce? Am I right?" Mr. Connery asks.

"Uh..." Adam says as he quickly looks to Tim who only shrugged his shoulders. "Yes, I am. But I don't understand. The topic of divorce was just brought up last night."

"I was contacted last night by Adam Chance. I have known Adam for many years. I have been his family and Governor McKellen's attorney for a very long time. And I believe I can help you out. Shall we talk?" The lawyer asks as he motions to an empty table.

"Uh, yeah. Sure." Adam nods and gets up to follow Connery to the empty table.

Tim looks around to see Chance over at a table with Avi and his family.

"Momma, I'll be right back." Tim says as he pats her on the hand.

"Okay, Sweetie." Dena smiles.

Tim walks over to the table and taps Chance on the shoulder.

"Sorry to interrupt but can I speak with you for just one second?" Tim says politely.

"Yeah, sure." Chance says as he gets up and follows Tim over next to the fence.

"What is that?" Tim asks as he points in the direction of Adam and the lawyer.

"Oh, I see Mr. Connery made it." Chance smiles. "Well, Adam can't go to a lawyer so I brought a lawyer to him."

"That's nice but did you have to get the most expensive? Did you see that suit he's wearing? Chance, we can't afford a guy like that. We appreciate the help but we don't have any money." Tim says quietly.

"Tim, do you want Adam to get his divorce from Austin?" Chance asks.

"That's a stupid question. You know I do." Tim answers.

"Then let me help. Sean is the best lawyer around. Adam will get his divorce in no time at all." Chance says.

"That would be awesome, Chance. But did you not hear the part where I said we don't have any money? He didn't buy that three piece suit by giving free service to people like me and Adam." Tim says.

"And did you not hear me when I said I wanted to help?" Chance chuckles. "I'll pay his fees. You can count it as an early wedding present."

"Are you serious. Chance, that guy can't be cheap." Tim says.

"You're right. He's not. But he's well worth what he's paid. You know I have the money." Chance lowers his voice.

"Yeah, I know you're wealthy but this is just ..." Tim says shaking his head.

"I want to do this for you guys." Chance says. "Please."

Tim sighs as he pulls Chance into a hug.

"So is that a yes?" Chance asks quietly.

"It's a yes." Tim answers.
