Over the following week, Wooyoung had a hard time getting his city visit out of his head. San's dimpled smile seemed to follow him every where, even into his dreams.
And the fact that he wore the hoodie every day didn't help him get his mind off things.
The only thing that did was the fact that his parents followed through with their threat and cut off his phone service.
While he was happy that he didn't have to worry about them calling him nonstop anymore, it turned his phone into a glorified music player and he had no way to contact anyone. And since he was unable to pay for WiFi right now, he had no way of looking anything up either.
So on his next day off, Wooyoung put on the outfit that San had bought for him. It was the nicest thing he owned, so he figured it would have to do if he was going to go look for a second job. He needed to have some way for people to get ahold of him.
And by people, Wooyoung meant his boss. Because he didn't know anyone here.
The only other people who worked at the library were older, and no offense to them, but he really had no interest in getting to know them outside of work.
Wooyoung checked himself out in the mirror, once again wishing he had a little makeup so that he looked nicer for any potential interview he could get today, but this would have to do.
He hurried down to the bus to take it to the main part of town and started walking by all the businesses looking for help wanted signs with a stack of resumes in his hand.
It had been a challenge, but he had managed to print them out using the library printer without anyone knowing, although he had to pay per page so it probably didn't really matter that much.
There were a few placed that had signs up, most of them restaurants or bars, but as soon as Wooyoung said he didn't have any serving experience he was turned away immediately. And the places that would give him a chance wouldn't work with his schedule at the library.
Wooyoung was starting to lose hope when he came across a small office tucked in between two buildings. It was for a private detective, and he had a sign up too saying he was looking for a file clerk.
Thinking this could be it, Wooyoung pushed the door open, setting off a small bell.
A tall, fairly muscular man stepped out of a back room and paused when he saw Wooyoung. "Hi Son, how can I help you?" He asked, his eyes flicking ever so slightly to take in Wooyoung's appearance.
He suddenly felt very self conscious as he cleared his throat. "Um, I saw your sign." He said, pointing at the window. "A-And I was wondering if you still needed help?"
The man crossed his arms, making his shoulders and upper arms flex a little.
Damn he was fit...
"I might be. Why should I hire you?"
"Well, I'm very organized, Sir. And I'm already used to a filing system. To be honest with you, I work for the library several blocks over and I'm looking for a second job. I'm a hard working and I do my best to do everything right the first time." Wooyoung did his best to stand up straight, but he found the man intimidating, so that was hard to do.
"You work at the library?"
"Yes, Sir."
The man hummed and sat down at his desk. "Sit."
Wooyoung did as he was told and kept a firm grip on his stack of resumes. He felt very nervous, but he didn't fully understand why.
"What's your name?"
"Wooyoung, Sir. Jung Wooyoung."
"Tell me, Wooyoung. Are you good at keeping secrets?" The man leaned forward to rest his elbows on his desk. Then he laced his fingers together and rested his chin on them.
"I believe so?" Wooyoung answered, then cringed when he realized he stated it as a question.
The man just chuckled. "You're cute. There's no need to be scared or nervous. I just have to ask these things because of my line of work. See, if I were to hire you, then I'd need you to sign a full non disclosure agreement. Do you know what that is?"
Wooyoung nodded. "Yes, it means I can't divulge anything about what I read."
"That's right. But it's not just what you read. It's also what you see, hear, do. None of it can. Everything done here must stay inside these walls."
Wooyoung gulped, but nodded. "I understand. And I can do that."
They sat in silence for a long moment, just staring at each other, then the man extended a hand. "I'm Marcus. Welcome to P.I.M."
"Pim?" The younger said, shaking the man's hand.
"Yeah, it's the name of my company. Private Investigator Marcus." He chuckled and rubbing the back of his neck. "I'm not very creative when it comes to things like that, but at least I'm smart enough to have left my last name out of the mix."
Wooyoung laughed with him. "And what is that?"
"Pauly."
Wooyoung had got press his lips together to try and force down his laughter.
"It's ok. Laugh away." Marcus said, bowing his head.
"N-No. I'm fine." Wooyoung cleared his throat a couple of times to compose himself. "You didn't pick your name."
Marcus arched an eyebrow. "I like you. I'll tell you what. Give me your schedule for the library and I will work around it and make sure you still have at least one day off a week. Then, if you do well enough after a couple of months, I'll hire you on full time and maybe throw in a raise to make it worthwhile. Does that sound good?"
"Yes! Oh, thank you!" Wooyoung beamed as he pulled out a piece of paper. "Here's my schedule. It's usually pretty consistent, but I can let you know if there are any changes."
"Please do. That was your first job, so I will respect their schedule. Plus I don't need you here for set ours or anything. Mostly what you are going to be doing is making sure I stay organized." Marcus laughed again as they both looked around at the piles of paper everywhere. "I get so busy it's hard to find the time, so that's why I decided to post the sign. Which I guess I can take down now." The man winked at Wooyoung before walking up to the front window.
"When would you like me to start?" Wooyoung asked, standing up too.
"How about Monday after you're done at the library?"
"That would be great, thank you!" He started to leave, then paused. "Um. This is embarrassing... But I don't have a cell phone right now. I promise I'll be here on Monday. I just don't have a way for you to contact me." He felt his cheeks heat up as he looked at the ground.
Marcus stepped over to him and stopped only a few inches away. He placed a hand on Wooyoung's elbow. "That's fine. I'm a trusting person until you give me a reason not to. I'll see you on Monday. And don't worry about the time. If you don't have a phone I'm guessing you don't have a car?"
Wooyoung blushed heavily and nodded a couple of times. That's when he realized that he also only came up to the man's chest and he suddenly felt very short.
"For now time won't be an issue. I'm just glad to have the help." Marcus chuckled and squeezed Wooyoung's elbow once before motioning to the door. "Be safe getting home."
"Thank you." Wooyoung stepped away and bowed once before stepping outside.
As he walked around the corner, the brightest smile crossed his face and he practically skipped down the street. He honestly hadn't been expecting to find a job today, but now that he did, maybe he could afford to eat better and get nicer clothes.
First thing first, though, next time he got paid he was going to look at setting up a new phone plan.
Wooyoung was headed to the bus stop when he noticed a familiar face walking out of a small convenience store.
"Jongho!" He called out.
He younger paused and looked around with wide eyes, but then a wide smile crossed his face that creased his eyes. "Wooyoung! What are you doing over here?"
Wooyoung jogged over to him and waved his stack of papers. "Job hunting. Which is successfully over!"
"What happened to your job at the library?"
The two of them started walking at the same time like it was the most natural thing. "I still have it. I needed to find a second job to help cover expenses." Wooyoung said, biting his lip.
"Is there anything I can do to help you?" Jongho asked, leaning forward a little to catch Wooyoung's eye.
"No!" He answered immediately. "No, I didn't say that looking for a handout or anything..." That was the last thing he wanted. He really needed to learn to keep his mouth shut.
"That wasn't my intention at all. I know what it's like to start at nothing." Jongho said quietly, looking forward again. His lips were pushed out a little in a pout and Wooyoung had to bite back the smile that threatened to break across his face.
"Are you talking about the farm?" He asked.
The younger hummed and shoved his hands in his pockets. It was then that Wooyoung noticed he smelled like freshly tilled earth and he found it incredibly attractive. "I wanted to do something different, and the idea of doing something where I could take care of others but also use my hands every day sounded perfect. And I love every second of it. It's a very satisfying job."
The way Jongho's face lit up when talking about it made Wooyoung's heart beat a little faster. "That's nice that you know what you want out of life."
They slowed down and Jongho tilted his head to the side. "What do you want?"
Wooyoung now stopped all together. No one had really asked him that before, nor had he taken the time to think about it. But after a moment, his eyes flicked to Jongho's soft hazel colored eyes. "I want to belong somewhere."
The younger gave him a confused look, but didn't press him further. "What are you doing now?" He asked instead, stepping off to the side.
It was then that Wooyoung realized they were standing next to Jongho's truck. The sight made him a little said, knowing they would probably have to say goodbye. "Well, I was planning on going home honestly."
Jongho gave him a crooked smile. "Hop in. We should go celebrate you getting another job. My treat!" He said, opening the door for Wooyoung to get in.
"No, I can't let you do that! You've already do-"
"Just get in the car, Woo." Jongho smirked at him.
Once again Wooyoung found himself following the younger's command and he slipped into the front seat.
Jongho ran around the front of the car and jumped behind the wheel. "What are you in the mood for?" He asked, bouncing in his seat a little.
Wooyoung bit his lip and hummed. "How about a burger? Just somewhere cheap." He added, shooting Jongho a brief glare.
The younger just chuckled and pulled away from the curb. "If I didn't want to do this I wouldn't offer. I like spending time with you."
Wooyoung felt himself blush a little. "Well next time I'm buying." He said, hoping the statement would actually be true.
"It's a date." Jongho smirked as he spun the wheel to make a right hand turn.
They ended up stopping at a local fast food place where they could order burgers and a basket of fries to share. It was honestly one of the best places Wooyoung had ever been.
"Do you like it?" Jongho asked as he sucked some sauce off his thumb. "Sorry if it's a little messy."
"Messy food it the best." Wooyoung laughed as a large glob of sauce plopped onto his wrapper. "It's delicious! I'm going to have to remember the place."
"I come here all the time. I actually provided these." Jongho holds up one of the fries and twists it in his fingers.
Wooyoung was speechless for a moment. "Just how big is your farm?" He asked, trying not to sound as dumbfounded as he felt.
"I mean, it's not the largest on out there, but it's been enough that I have several employees under me to help keep the place running. I have contracts with a lot of the local businesses to provide them with meat and produce. Some places like this pay me outright and I put the money right back into buying more produce or farm animals."
"Wow. You really have quite the operation, don't you?"
Jongho's cheeks turned a little red at the praise. "You should come see it sometime." His eyes flashed to Wooyoung and a look of hope crossed his face.
The older smiled back as he picked up a couple of fries. "I'd like that. You'd have to pick me up though, unless there's a bus that goes there."
"I'll gladly pick you up. Here." Jongho pulled out his wallet and pulled out a piece of paper. "I meant to give this to you last time, but it slipped my mind. It's my number." He said softly.
Wooyoung took it with a slightly shaking hand. Their fingertips brushed for a moment as the paper moved from one hand to another. "Th-Thanks. I don't have a ph-phone right now. But once I get one I'll be sure to send you a text or call you so you have mine."
"That sounds good." Jongho beamed and continued to eat.
For a moment, Wooyoung just watched him. It was nice getting to spend time with someone like this.
He was suddenly very thankful that he had run into Jongho at that small convenience store. And he was looking forward to getting to know the kindhearted boy even more.
Wooyoung clutched the phone number in his hand and continued to eat while trying to calm his racing heart.
