Wooyoung hummed to himself as he pushed a cart of books through the library. It was close to closing time, so all he needed to do was work on returning books to their proper section.
This was his favorite time of day because it was quiet. The people who came in here were all respectful of each other and did their best to keep to themselves.
Unlike the group of ten children who came in about mid morning and destroyed the kids section.
Being the lowest person on the totem pole, Wooyoung was given the lovely task of cleaning it up.
While the idea had been daunting at first, he took it as an opportunity to make sure everything was as organized as he could make it.
In his opinion, that area of the library had never looked better. He even found a few books that had been marked as lost, so he was able to re-add them to the inventory.
Wooyoung stopped next to one of the isles he needed and started pulling books off his cart. He scanned the labels on the shelf and started reorganizing everything.
Then someone cleared their throat and Wooyoung turned to see who needed him.
And immediately wanted to go hide.
"Hi." Jongho said, giving him a small smile.
"J-Jongho! What are you doing here?" He asked, trying to stay calm. It had been a few days since he had seen the farmer but for whatever reason, he found himself wondering if they'd run into each other again.
"I was in the area and I thought I'd come by to see if you were working."
Wooyoung took a step back, shocked that he had actually been sought out, and tripped on the hem of his own jeans.
Books went flying everywhere and he ended up falling back into the cart behind him with a loud yelp.
"Are you ok?" Jongho said, rushing forward to pull Wooyoung up from where he was laying on his back. The older winced and pulled his arm to inspect where it had slammed into the cart.
"That's going to leave a mark." He grumbled, then stared at the ground. There was no way he could make eye contact with Jongho now after embarrassing himself like that... "S-Sorry. I can be such a klutz sometimes..."
"You don't need to apologize. I snuck up on you. I'll help you clean this up." Jongho said, quickly scooping up some of the books in his arms.
"N-No, you don't need to." Wooyoung reached out to stop him and placed a hand on the farmer's arm, then quickly pulled it away.
Jongho just continued his task and started stacking the books on the cart.
After collecting himself, Wooyoung stood and rubbed the back of his head. Why did he feel so nervous all of the sudden? It's not like he knew Jongho. There was nothing to be nervous about.
Although he did look good in the white t-shirt and unbuttoned red, blue, and black plaid shirt he wore over it...
His eyes drifted down to Jongho's jeans and the muddy brown cowboy boots poking out from beneath them.
Then he felt his face getting hot.
"Anyway." Jongho said, drawing Wooyoung's attention back to his face. "I know you're new here, so I wanted to invite you out to the farm sometime for dinner. It can be hard to make new friends sometimes, but I wanted you to know you always have a place at my table if you want it."
Wooyoung felt his heart skip a beat. "You came all the way here just to tell me that?"
"Well, yeah." Jongho's smile got a little brighter. "Everyone needs a place to start. How well do you know the area?"
"Not well." Wooyoung admitted. "I've done a little exploring, but I needed to start working full time in order to afford rent, so I haven't had a lot of time to dedicate to getting to know the area."
"What time do you get off?"
Wooyoung pulled out his phone. "In about half an hour actually. The library closes in fifteen minutes, then I have a few closing things I need to do."
"Oh! Great." Jongho rubbed his hands together. "Meet me out front and I'll take you to a great local place to welcome you to town."
"You don-" Wooyoung started to protest, but Jongho held a hand up to stop him.
"I insist. You haven't really lived here until you've been to this great restaurant over on 15th street. I was already planning on going there for dinner, so it will be even better with some company." The farmer didn't even give Wooyoung the chance to say anything before he turned and walked away.
Wooyoung had a feeling the last part wasn't true, but he was grateful that Jongho tried to play it off like that. He hated taking handouts... And part of him feared that the farmer was taking pity on him.
It had to be obvious that Wooyoung didn't have a lot of money. He was pretty sure he was wearing the same shirt that he had originally met Jongho in. His jeans were horribly faded and his shoes had a hole in the left toe.
He let out a long sigh.
Maybe he should just sneak out the back and not worry about it... But he could never do that. He refused to be rude like his parents. He would let Jongho decide for himself he he felt Wooyoung was worthy to be around after dinner.
Deep down, he knew he wouldn't be surprised if the younger never wanted to see him again.
The thought of that made Wooyoung's heart sink as he pushed the cart of books back into the office so he could put them away when he got in tomorrow if someone else didn't do it first.
After he had finished his closing duties, Wooyoung bit his lip and stepped out front, locking the door behind him. Then he looked around and paused when he saw Jongho leaning against the wall of the building.
He had one leg propped up so his knee was bent, and he was leaning forward slightly while looking at his phone.
Wooyoung once again found himself admiring the curves of the farmer and bit his lip a little harder as his eyes drifted a little lower.
What was he doing? Wooyoung shook his head suddenly and rubbed the back of his neck.
Jongho probably wasn't into guys anyway.
He paused one more time as that thought ran through his head. 'In to guys'. Wooyoung liked boys. He was finally starting to accept that about himself. And it felt so good.
So even if Jongho was straight, at least Wooyoung could admire him in secret.
He giggled to himself before walking over to the farmer, who lifted his head and smiled at the older. "Ready?" he asked, shoving his phone in his back pocket and leaving his hand there.
Wooyoung had to look away as his previous thoughts started to come back. "Yeah, lead the way."
"I actually have my truck, it'll be easier if we drive there. You can follow me if you'd like?" Jongho said, pulling out his keys.
Suddenly Wooyoung's embarrassment came back as he ran his foot back and forth over the pavement. "I don't have a car. I walk here or take the bus."
"Ok." Jongho said brightly, make Wooyoung glance at him. He still had the same smile on, like the fact that Wooyoung didn't own a car didn't even phase him. "I can drop you off at home when we are done if you'd like."
"Thanks." Wooyoung said, following him to his truck.
The outside was still incredibly dusty and Wooyoung noticed a lot of stray straw in the bed of his truck. The inside of the cab was clean though, and very roomy.
"Feel free to adjust the air however you need to." Jongho said as his engine roared to live.
Even though he offered, Wooyoung still didn't want to mess with his settings, so he just kept his hands to himself and sat still in his seat.
He couldn't help but glance over at Jongho as he drove.
The younger kept one arm hanging out the window and was bobbing his head in time with the song on the radio. His lips were pushed forward in a slight pout that Wooyoung found adorable, and he couldn't help but smile.
The restaurant didn't end up being too far away, and it was late enough in the evening that it wasn't too busy either.
They got a booth in the corner and got themselves situated before Jongho started talking in an animated fashion about the menu. "Now their burgers are a staple, but they also have a really good Shepard's pie and a chicken parmesan dish that is to die for. I get it every time I come here." Jongho said, not taking his eyes off Wooyoung as he spoke. "Their fries are perfect too, always perfectly crispy. And really, so are their onion rings."
"Ok, ok, ok." Wooyoung started laughing and wrapped an arm around his stomach as he doubled over. "Breath Jongho. I get it, they have good food here."
The younger rubbed the back of his neck as a bright smile crossed his face that crinkled his nose and made his eyes scrunch close. "Sorry, I really love to eat."
"You wouldn't be able to tell by looking at you." Wooyoung muttered to himself as he scanned the menu.
"What do you mean?" Jongho asked, tilting his head to the side.
Wooyoung's head snapped up and a look of horror crossed his face when he realized the farmer had heard him. "I... What? Oh... I... It's just. You're s-so fit and everything and you look healthy and good and... I mean..." Wooyoung stammered.
Jongho reached over and placed a hand on top of his. "Now it's your turn to breath." The younger gave him a kind smile. "Thank you. Really it's just from working on the farm all day. You on the other hand," Jongho gave him a skeptical look. "You look like you need a little more meat on your bones." He flashed a teasing smile next. "So get whatever you want."
"I can pay for myself, you don't ha-"
"I'm the one who invited you out, it would be rude for me not to." Jongho said, staring down at his menu as a way to finalize his statement.
Wooyoung's shoulders sank a little as he silently vowed to pay Jongho back once he was able to get some cash.
The farmer ended up ordering his chicken dish and Wooyoung got a burger.
As soon as their food was served, Jongho cut off a piece of his chicken. "Here, try this!" He said.
Wooyoung hesitated for a moment, not sure what to make of the fact that a complete stranger was offering him a bit of his food, but he took advantage of it and leaned forward, making sure to grab just he chicken with his teeth and pulled it into his mouth.
"Oh my god," He said, covering his mouth with his hand as he chewed. "You're right! This is amazing!"
Jongho beamed before eating his own bite. He hummed with delight and closed his eyes.
They made small talk over the course of the meal, never getting into anything personal. It felt so natural to Wooyoung... Like they had been friends for ages. Nothing was forced and nothing felt out of place.
The farmer spent a lot of time talking about the area and suggesting other places that Wooyoung had to visit on his days off.
At one point he stole a couple of Wooyoung fries, winking at him as he did.
Wooyoung bit his lip and tried to keep his heart under control as Jongho acted like it was the most natural thing in the world.
As promised, Jongho paid for the meal and took Wooyoung home to his apartment complex.
The older thought he saw a look of concern cross Jongho's face as he eyes the old apartments, but it was gone so fast he figured he must have imagined it. "Well, thank you, for tonight." He said, placing a hand on the door handle.
"No problem! I had a lot of fun." Jongho bowed his head, then smiled.
Wooyoung already found the sight addicting. Jongho's entire face lit up whenever he smiled and it did things to the older that he wasn't ready to admit yet...
"Ok, well, I'll see you around?" Wooyoung asked.
"You bet." Jongho said instantly.
Wooyoung felt himself blushing and was thankful for the cover of night. He said one more goodbye before hopping out of the truck.
He noticed that Jongho waited until he was inside his building before driving away. The action had him placing a hand over his heart before he started to climb the stairs to the third floor, and down the long hallway to his apartment.
Tonight was the first night that moving to the city had really been worth all the pain and heartache.
He couldn't wait to see the farmer again, and he found himself hoping it would be sooner rather than later.
