prologue

Monster

YOU COULD TRY TO SPIN IT ANY WAY YOU WANTED BUT Claudia Jelani was a murderer. She preferred assassin, it sounded cooler and people seemed to respect that profession more but, she knew deep down it was the same thing. Either way, it was morally wrong and somewhere along the way she'd be judged about it.

Not that she cared too much for the judgment of others.

"Come here, wolfie, wolfie, wolfie." She called out in a low and controlled voice, almost mocking the creature that was meant to be the predator.

The tables had turned now, and they were the prey.

"You are making this really easy on me! Not even trying to fight back." She yelled, the streets completely empty before a figure jumped at the girl.

She managed to push him off immediately, taking out her dagger from the holder wrapped around her leg. One cut, and this wolf would be done for good, after about twelve hours of excruciating pain, of course. Claudia wasn't that terrible so instead, as she hovered over the blood soaked and quivering man, wanting to let him off easy.

By easy, she meant getting him across the throat with wolfsbane, as deep as she could.

"Goodnight." The Jelani girl whispered, shutting the mans eyelids for him carefully

Again, she wasn't a complete monster, he did fight pretty hard to live as much as she teased him about it, so she was going to give him a little respect.

The girl grabbed his arm and dragged him down to her car, eventually getting him into the trunk after a few minutes. She sighed as she changed her clothes, the blood stains probably not the best to walk into a social gathering with. Then she remembered where she was going after this.

Ugh, a party.

The breeding place for teen hormones, underage drinking, and tons of other shenanigans she wanted no part of. Yet again, another reason why she hated working with Garrett and Violet. They weren't very professional, in any aspect of the word.

She contemplated whether leaving was her best option, again. Then came to the conclusion that if she didn't she was bound to go insane with these two idiots. Skilled? Yes, fun to be around... well—

"Finally! You're here, meet our new friends Mason and Liam." Violet said, the fakest smile on her face as she dragged Claudia from the door to the area where the small group was sitting. "This is Claudia, the one we were telling you about."

"I'm Mason, killer outfit by the way." The boy commented as he introduced himself, shaking the girls hand.

"Thanks." The Jelani girl responded, smiling slightly. Part of her didn't like the idea of befriending people just to fit in but, it was the smartest idea her partners had ever had. ".. and you are?"

Claudia would be lying if she said she didn't notice the boy right away. He wasn't the tallest but, neither was she, not that it mattered but, he held a certain facade around him that intrigued her. She wanted to know what kind of secrets wandered around his mind.

Lord knows there were plenty around hers.

"Uh, oh yeah, right. My name is Liam." The boy smiled awkwardly, wiping his hands on his jeans before shaking her hand quickly.

She laughed at that, shaking her head slightly as Garrett spoke up.

"Are you all finished with work for the night?" He asked subtly, him and Violet both looking at the girl carefully.

"Of course I am." Claudia responded. "I'm free to party, I guess."

"Perfect." Garrett clapped his hands together. "Keg is in the kitchen, and I think there is food on the counter if the beasts here didn't eat it all."

That was a joke but, in Beacon Hills, the Jelani girl knew there were beasts around every corner.

"I'm going to go get a drink." Claudia saluted the group before she walked away, hoping she could sneak off all night and not deal with her two "friends", they were just way too much of a pain in the ass.

She poured herself a drink when she finally reached the keg, letting out a slight sigh before she took a sip. The girl wondered if being born in different circumstances would have allowed her to enjoy events like this. She wondered if she would be able to enjoy anything in some alternative universe.

"Hey, uh—" as the Jelani girl turned around, she smacked headfirst into the boy from earlier, Liam, the beer spilling on them both as they clutched onto their heads. "Ouch!"

"Jesus! Do you need glasses!?" The girl yelped, throwing the cup onto the ground as she felt the beer seeping through her clothes.

She absolutely hated the smell of beer too, great.

"Sorry, I wasn't expecting you to turn around." Liam admitted, running over to grab a few paper towels, the boy fumbling over himself before he finally decided to just hand her the whole roll. "Sorry, again."

"You don't need to say sorry, just don't do it again." Claudia responded dryly, ripping off a piece of paper towel from the roll. "What were you doing over here anyways?"

"They sent me to see if you wanted to play truth or dare." The Dunbar boy said awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck as the girls intimidating gaze bore into him.

"I'm not a fan of games." The Jelani girl answered simply, still drying herself off. "But if you want to hang out, we can go outside."

"Wait—... really?" Liam questioned in disbelief.

"Unless you want me to change my mind." Claudia spoke, her voice challenging the other teen as she finally reached over to the trash, throwing a few paper towels in.

"Nope—... uh no, i'll go get my jacket." Before she could get another word in, he was off getting what he needed to before going outside.

"Dork." The Jelani girl mumbled under her breath as she shook her head slightly.

But, in a cute kinda way.
