"Are you done, baby?" Byeol questioned her son, who was busy putting on his socks.
"I am almost done, mom," the little boy replied, now standing up.
Byeol approached him, "You aren't forgetting anything, right?" she asked, hurriedly putting some of his clothes in the travel bag.
The boy nodded as he saw his mom busy stuffing everything in sight inside the bag. Unable to stop himself any longer, he began, "Mom, where are we going?" he asked, blinking innocently.
"I told you we're going on a vacation," Byeol replied, still busy packing.
"But mom, why are we doing everything in a hurry, and why were you and dad talking about never coming back last night?" the little boy asked, his hand gripping his mother's shoulder as she changed his shoes.
"I told you not to wear those," she mumbled, putting him in a new pair of shoes. "And stop asking questions, we're getting late." She grabbed his hand in one of hers, dragging him outside while her other hand gripped the suitcase tightly.
"Are you guys done?" Jun questioned, putting the last bag in the backseat of the car.
Byeol nodded, slightly pushing her son forward into the car. She looked around her house, her eyes suddenly filling with tears as a flashback of all the happy moments spent there rushed through her thoughts. Seeing her condition, Jun approached her. He hugged her while she cried for a few minutes in his embrace.
"I'm so sorry, Jun," she mumbled, her tone broken.
"Don't say that, Byeol. It's not your fault," he patted her back, trying to comfort her.
"I'm scared, Jun. What if he does something to you?" she looked up.
"He won't be able to. We're leaving for abroad, and once we do, he won't have any influence over us," he whispered, giving her a peck on the cheek.
"Everything will be fine, right?" she asked, soft sobs evident.
Jun nodded, forcing a smile as he saw their son looking at them through the car window.
"Now let's go, we don't want to miss our flight." Giving her one last peck, he let go of her. Byeol forced a smiled as she sat down in the car, but not before wiping away her tears.
Their car moved swiftly through the forest, the greenery surrounding them making Byeol feel somewhat at ease. The journey to the outside of the forest was long, but it never felt like it because of the beautiful scenery they always enjoyed while traveling. But this time, it was different. Byeol was getting anxious as they neared the exit while Jun tried his best not to break down in front of his wife and kid.
While they were still occupied by their own thoughts, a soft voice took them out of their daze.
"Mom-" her son began, his eyes fixed on her.
"What happened, baby?" she asked, anxious.
"I dropped my ball," he replied, blinking.
"What ball?"
He pointed in the direction where a football was lying.
"I told you to be careful. Now look, it's gone," she sighed.
"Can I go and bring it back?" the little boy asked, looking down.
"No, it's gone. Forget about it," she bluntly replied.
"But mom-"
"I said no, now shush," she raised her voice a little.
"Byeol!" Jun began, his focus still on the road.
She looked outside, already frustrated and stopping herself from taking it out on him. "Don't worry, baby, you can bring it back," Jun smiled at the kid as he saw him sniffing because of his mother's scolding.
"I can?" the boy's eyes lit up at his words, and Jun nodded in response. Jun pressed the brakes, making the car come to an instant halt.
"Be quick, alright?" he shouted at the boy, who got out of the car as soon as it stopped.
"I'll be back in a second," the boy replied, running in the direction where he had dropped his ball.
He reached the place and was about to pick up the ball, but it suddenly moved forward due to the windy weather. The boy tried following the ball, not realizing he was getting farther from his parents. He could now only see their car from a distance and didn't know how to get back. He turned around, finding himself in an unfamiliar place.
"Mom, Dad..." he mumbled, looking around.
Just as he was about to move forward to approach his parents, a loud sound startled him. His eyes widened as he saw the car he was in minutes ago, explode. The explosion was deafening, and he felt the shockwave ripple through the air, knocking him to the ground. He watched in horror as the car shattered into pieces, the windows blown out, and the metal frame crumpled like paper. Flames erupted from the wreckage, and the heat was intense, even from a distance. Debris flew everywhere, some landing dangerously close to him.
The boy trembled, covering his ears as he stood frozen, not daring to move an inch. "M-mom, D-dad," he mumbled between sobs, his voice barely a whisper.
The smoke from the explosion filled the air, thick and suffocating. As he struggled to breathe, he saw a group of well-built men approaching the car, now just a burning, metallic wreck. They moved with a purpose, their faces set in grim determination. One of them, whom the boy recognized, ordered the others to push the car. They followed his command, using all their strength to roll the car towards the nearby lake.
The boy's eyes widened as he saw the scene unfold before him. He wanted to cry, to say something, to run and save his parents, to shout for help, but nothing came out of his mouth. He just sobbed silently, his body shaking with fear.
"Han Byeol, this is what you get for messing with Park Yoshi. You thought you could just run away? Tch, enjoy with your little family in heaven now!" Yoshi shouted, as if wanting the whole world to hear. After his proclamation, he kicked the remaining shattered pieces into the lake. Getting back into his car, he left along with the other men as if nothing had happened.
The little boy, who had seen everything with his innocent eyes, couldn't stop himself from marching towards the lake where his everything was drowning. He looked around, but there was no one, just eerie silence, and so without thinking twice, he held his breath and stepped forward to jump...
