16 The Helicopter

[The incidents, dialogues, and actions in the series will be altered from the original series from here onwards]

Silence settled around the group of teenagers. The rescue chopper had simply flown away, mistaking the students for infected zombies and taking away a boy who lied to be the sole survivor. The door was locked shut after the fire, with Cheong-san resting his back against it. Most of the teens were dispersed around the rooftop while some gathered together for small talk. Suhyeok and a few others were silently stacking up wooden shards and pieces of unused desks stored on the terrace, in hopes of lighting a fire.

Away from them, y/n stood at a corner, looking down at the school ground that was once lush green. Blood and flesh were tattered along the grass, with an uncountable amount of students and teachers waddling around in search of an unaffected human. She could even see Gyeong-Su, who was desperately clawing at a tree to get past it. The empty barrel of the gun sat in her hand, disappointed that Dae-su had mistaken her words for 'fire'. As she was trying to say that the door opens only in case of a fire. But alas Dae-su was restless at the time.

Y/n soon turned back from the grounds, looking back to her friends who were all clamped around a pile of wood. Nam-ra stood above them all with a questioning look, summed up with a speck of an uneasy expression. Su-Hyeok was busy trying to make a fire, with a wooden stick on a piece of wood. Just like how dry hay was used to make fire back in the day. But other than smoke and a few sparks of fire, nothing came ablaze. Y/n stood next to Nam-ra and nudged her right side. "Are you gonna make them look pathetic or just gonna give them the lighter? You're not that sadistic are you?" Nam-Ra narrowly scowled at the female, who was smiling gleefully despite her taunting words. Nam-ra reaches down for her skirt pocket and pulls out the lighter.

"Use this instead" The group stared at the class President with surprise. "why couldn't you give it earlier!" Grumbled Dae-su snatching the lighter from her. Y/n wrapped her arm around Nam-ra, patting her back with a proud smile. The first time y/n caught her smoking was in her first year when she was running away after pranking a teacher. Though she had scolded Nam-ra a thousand times over it, it seemed to not work. But she started to reduce her intake of smoke due to the shooter's constant pestering.

As the sun dropped for the day and night began to gloom, a moderately large fire had been put up. Recollecting previous campfires and memories, the teens sat around the fire. A delightful conversation was going on, a few confessions of prejudice that each had about everyone. And y/n also got to know that On-Jo was scared of her at first and had regretted not making friends earlier. The shooter had dismissed the statement, arguing that she was never too late to make her a friend, quite narcissistically at that. However, the most surprising confession of the day was everyone's expectation, except On-Jo's. Cheong-San finally revealed his feelings toward the other girl, who walked away from the group in shock. The author didn't write the actual words of confession as they had forgotten the lines and are too lazy for a rewatch.

The happy chatter had subsided sooner than they had anticipated. On-Jo was seated on a corner on the rooftop, crying silently. Though everyone wanted to console the teen they somehow did not want to impede. Y/n was restlessly staring at the said girl with questioning eyes. Maybe it was the lack of understanding she had of sentiments, that Y/n found it ridiculous. "You'll dig a hole in her head like that" Wu-Jin's voice drew her attention away from On-Jo as she looked up. Her head was comfortably placed on his lap as she lay on the floor. "I don't know if you'll understand but, hiding your feeling for your best friend ain't easy. And crying over it as an emotional person is perfectly alright, if you also include the current circumstances, the pressure of your dead peers can be overwhelming"

Y/n felt the corners of her lips lift to a cheeky smile. "Wu, you'll make a great therapist you that? You talk real smooth" Wu-jin softly laughed at the girl's compliment, placing his palm over her hair and combing it down. "Then I'd want you as my first customer" Y/n giggled with closed eyes, nodding off to Wu-Jin's hands. "I'll gladly take up that offer then, Dr. Jang Wu Jin" The tips of his ears blushed pink, watching the girl drift off to a nap.

But the silence is short-lived as On-Jo's scream echoes off the place. All of them jump to their feet, watching in horror as Gwi-Nam choked On-Jo. "Where the fuck did he come from?!" Y/n yells in surprise and rushed in, only to stop as Cheong-San punched the bully in the face. On-Jo crawls to the side as Gwi-nam now charged after Cheong-san, who was easily thrown away by a kick. The action gets theatrical when Su-Hyeok jumps in and grabs Gwi-nam from behind, but he ends up getting thrown off to the floor. The bully presses his knee on Su-Hyeok's back and pulls the anti-sock squad leader's hair. "Acting all hero now? No matter how many asses you kiss now, you'll still be that mon-"

"Shut the fuck up Jeffrey" Gwi-Nam growled in annoyance as he was kicked midway through his dramatic sentences like before. Y/n rolled her eyes at the male with a subtle indication of dissatisfaction. "I gave you an opportunity, but you still pull this shit. Yoo Gwi-nam, just die" Despite those words, she honestly didn't have a clue as to what to do. With an empty gun and a vulnerable group of peers, she knew it ain't gonna be easy. At least she could push him off the roof and maybe unscrew the pipes. Before her thoughts could go on, Gwi-nam had successfully tackled her down, pressing down his forearm on her throat. "I'd have taken that choice if I wanted to, but having this power, do you think I'll waste it to help these losers? As if"

"Stay away from her!" The fifth one to come into action was Nam-ra, who was also affected by the virus and possibly had as much power as the one-eyed bully. Realizing this the boy had proposed a 'union' of the halfbies, only to get kicked in his balls. After a stare-off, they finally began to fight, with Nam-ra beating the shit out of Gwi-nam. Nam-ra was kicked over a pile of dusks, groaning loudly at the pain. He again went back to square on, climbed on top of Cheong-san, and pressed his right thumb on his left eye, in retaliation to his missing eye. "I'll kill you!"

Su-Hyeok crawled up from where he was laying and grabbed Gwi-nam's leg, but was kicked back to the ground. Y/n coughed loudly, standing to her feet and grabbing a wooden leg from the SOS. Gwi-nam was quicker, turning back and punching Y/n square in the face. A flash of emotion was seen in his one good eye, though it soon reflected the girl's angered face in it. "You know Y/n, though you tried to kill me, you're the reason I got all this strength. In return, I'll finish you off quickly"

"No thanks, bestie" Muttered Y/n leaning on the rail of the terrace with a smile and a bloody lip. Gwi-nam screamed rather loudly, dashing towards her with raised hands. Inches from her, he felt two hands grab him from behind, flipping him over the rooftop to the several floors below. Gwi-nam was back on the ground level as before. Wu-Jin panted due to the weight, moving to Y/n's side and pressing her face between in hands.

"Don't ever do that, remember, you still have a session to attend" Said Wu-Jin as he felt Y/n nod, shifting her head to the side and spitting a gulp of blood. Soon after the fight was over blobs of light began to appear on the building, with the whirring noise of a helicopter. The terrified expressions of the teens began to be replaced by relief. Dust and particles flew up in the air as the helicopter moved closer to the rooftop, not landing due to the lack of space. Soldiers armed with black rifles and shotguns jumped down to the rooftop and ran inside the school through the closed door. A few other soldiers checked up on the students.

"Are you here to save us?!" Ji-Min asked from beside Joon-Yeong. The soldier nodded, walking closer as he told the students to stay on their knees with their heads down on the floor, so they could check their temperature and obviously if they are bitten or not. Nam-ra shakes in fear, but the soldier ticks her off as sick with hypothermia. Y/n tilts her head, raising her head and sitting straight. "Hey! Keep down!"

Y/n sighed tiredly, as usual, dusting off her pants as she stood to her feet. The soldier was quick to point her rifle at her but was taken aback when she showed no sign of terror. "I've seen you in a picture before. You must be Mr. Lee Jung Do under the command of Jin Seon Mu. You didn't come here to rescue us, you met us by surprise. What's inside the school? Are you after Mr.Lee's laptop?" The soldier could only stare at Y/n, blown out of his mind as to how some random high schooler knew about it when it was even hidden from higher-ups. "Who- who are you? How do you know about this?!"

"Bang Y/n, daughter of Comrade Bang Jaehan and Lieutenant Yoon Cera of Special Forces Unit 6. I have no authority, but I'm a registered asset of the military by birthright, it's a privilege. I'd like to talk to your commander, Mr. Jin Seon Mu" Unfazed by the overly surprised expression of the soldier, Y/n happily accepts the man's in-ear as the commander spoke in a resistant manner. He knew it was going to be a hard choice, how was he gonna explain himself if she dies after he abandoned them? After all, he also has a daughter as herself back home. He knew Yoon Cera and her husband, personally. Heck, he knew he couldn't but he did anyway, with regrets that were inexcusable. "I've always acknowledged your parents' work over the years and am highly proud of them and having heard of your achievements as well. But I'm sorry kid, I have to make a choice"

Once again, the teens were left to watch the chopper fly away, leaving behind them with tears and anger. Y/n scoffed with a smile, tapping the back of her gun on the rooftop railing. Wu-Jin watches her with worry, he didn't know how long he can keep her sane, or if she was sane from the start. Or was it a facade to hide how scared she was, or a shield to mask how unfazed she was by these deaths so that no one would deem her a monster? He didn't know, and so did y/n herself.
