06 The Hose
The students sat in silence, not bothering to even share any glances. Wu-Jin was already worn out trying to circumvent and search for y/n since no one would let him leave. The infected students growled relentlessly, scrapping their shoes against the bloody floors of the school. From the cafeteria to the front gate, every corner was invaded by the zombies and to be alive in this mess was truly a miracle. Four students were in the girl's lavatory on the ground floor and all of them were seniors in their final year.
Ha-Ri was one of them, Wu-Jin's older sister and an archer. She had just returned to school after failing a tournament and stepped out to see the school flooding with zombies. Alongside her was another archer, Min-Jae. Mi-Jin, was a delinquent and smoker girl while Jun-Seong was a fearful boy and Mi-Jin's friend. Hari came in to find Wu-Jin and the other two seniors were in too much disbelief to follow them to locate him.
And still inside the school, in the art classroom was Su-Hyeok hiding from a few zombies and exhausted from fighting. Unknown to him, Y/n was searching for the boy from room to room, dodging and killing her fellow infected peers. He was only a few feet away from the science lab, but since the shooter had seen him last on the stairs, she climbed down. "Bare-Su where the hell are you dude?" She muttered, walking past some dead bodies that were either relieved of their heads or lower body.
"Bingo" Y/n silently whispers before hurrying to the janitor's closet and closing the door shut. "Never guessed this place would smell nice" The short-haired girl remarked, appreciating the fragrance of washing soaps and cleaning liquids. The scent of blood was long gone and the girl sighed in relief. Opening her duffle bag, she pulled out a new jacket, tossing the torn one inside the garbage can. Then she proceeded to take out a can of protein drink, finishing it in one go and washing its insides with the water in a bucket. Placing herself on the window sill, she began to arrange her gun and used the can to create a makeshift silencer.
Unexpectedly, the speaker began to creak, as if to make an announcement. "Students and teachers of Hyosan High School. I'm Park Sun-Hwa, the English teacher. Something strange is happening throughout the school. Some students are attacking others indiscriminately. So please flee and find a safe place. And if any student or faculty hears this and can, please call the police and the fire department. Students, hide somewhere safe until help arrives. If you can get out of the school, please get out. I'll say it again. Some students are..." Miss Park hesitates and the students could hear a sob evading her mouth. "Hey, everyone... You're okay, right? You're not hurt? I don't know what's going on in here or how this whole thing happened, but... Still, find a safe place and hide. I... I'm sorry... I can't help. Don't get hurt, okay? Please, let's stay alive and meet again. Okay?" The broadcast stopped right after and the students in the science lab ultimately looked at each other.
"Miss Park is in the broadcasting room... Wu-Jin, Nam-ra, and the others in the science lab and I'm in a closet" Y/n mutters, done with the gun and loaded it with bullets. "Gotta climb back up. Su-Hyeok you better greet me like a human" Soon, the girl was back on track but held a sharpened mop stick and her phone dialing Dae-Ik.
Wu-Jin and Dae-Su sat together at a desk, a disturbing stillness clouding over their heads. "She's going to be okay brother-in-law" Dae-su says as he watches Wu-Jin, who's continuously tapping his fingers on the wooden furniture. "I know that but, y/n can be quite reckless" The distraught boy reasons. Not used to consoling people, Dae-Su simply puts a hand around Wu-Jin.
"Don't worry On-Jo, Y/n and Su-Hyeok will be back. You know those two are strong and stuff" On-Jo only hums at the comforting words of I-sak, still anxious. I-Sak takes hold of On-Jo's hand holding them in place and both look out of the window, staring at the infected students walking around on the school ground. "I-sak... Why are you so cold"
"Huh? Cold?" The girl inquired, clueless. "Your hands are cold" I-sak pulls her hand away, but On-Jo grabs on, placing her hand against her face. "What's wrong? Are you-" On-Jo didn't get to finish and I-sak jumps in. "Really. I wasn't bitten. I mean it. I'm not bitten" The students perk up at the noise, staring at the two best friends. "She was bitten" Ji-Min mutters and the students feel another wave of fear wash over them, but it was drowning them knowing it was I-Sak. "What's going on? Did you get bitten?" Na-Yeon butts in.
"I-Sak..."
But the girl turned to the glass window in the supply room, watching her reflection. The whites of her eyes were turning red and her vision had a red tint to it. "No, right? I'm not, right? I'm not. I'm not one of them" I-Sak anxiously reiterates, though she knew she was bitten, she was simply too frightened to lose herself. On-Jo holds her friend's hand and Na-Yeon bursts out with another whine. "What are you doing? Throw her out! Get rid of her!"
I-Sak's nose begins to bleed and she drops to the floor in an instant. On-Jo started to shed tears, unable to see her friend standing up with cracking bones. Rough grunts left the infected girl's mouth, blending with the whimpers from On-Jo. "Hurry! She's turning into a zombie!" Na-Yeon cries out again, but no one dared to make a move yet, frozen on their spot. "I-Sak, don't do this" On-Jo sobs as she scooted closer but Cheong-san holds her back. I-Sak soon turned, jumping at Cheong-san. In a flash, he had pushed the girl away, resulting in her falling out of the window. However, On-Jo reached out and grabbed I-Sak's hand.
"Are you crazy? Let go!" Exclaims Cheong-san with fear as he tugs on her hand. On-Jo's sight began to blur as tears poured down, mixing with I-Sak's blood. "Let go!" He repeated, but this time he was hitting the infected with a wooden stool, that Na-Yeon had kicked to him. The memories of their friendship passed through her mind and On-Jo felt I-Sak's hand slip away. "On-Jo" Cheong-san mutters, but the girl kept looking outside, watching I-Sak's body twitch on the ground below them. "Hey! Come block this" Joon-Yeong calls out, trying to save the boy from freaking On-Jo out.
"What was that?" Y/n chatted to herself, hearing an abrupt gush of wind in the other hallway. "Archery" The girl quietly mumbled, but still agreed on going her way. If somebody from the archery club had survived, it was nice, and as insensitive as it sounds, she wished the survived one was Ha-ri. Passing the broadcasting room, Y/n was now on the stairs, the same one where Su-Hyeok was lost. "I wasted my time when he was still on the third one?" The shooter sighed, leaning on the wall and stabbing another infected down. Before she could climb up, her phone began to vibrate and it was Jae-ik.
"Y/n, why'd you call before?"
"Let's go, we won't last here any longer" Cheong-san says, watching more zombies had gathered around the classroom. "Where would we go?" Hyo-Ryung asks from the corner, holding her hands together. "The hose from before" Wu-Jin speaks up and Cheong-san dashes to the door. It wasn't long before the group had begun to tie the hose into knots. The strategy was modest, go down the hose and check for vacant rooms. "I'll go down and check the empty rooms. I'll call when it's clear, okay?" Announces Cheong-san as he was seated on the window sill, a single leg outside. "Okay" Nonetheless, the teenager looks around, watching On-Jo sitting in silence and dismissing the commotion happening around her.
"Wait Gyeong-su, you go first" The mentioned boy stammered in panic, looking at his friend in mistrust. "Why? Did you see something?" Before any more time could be squandered, the others swiftly propelled him out of the window. "Guys! Miss Park is on the second floor!" Gyeong-su's voice shrieks after a minute and they could hear their teacher's voice calling out to them. One by one, the students climbed down. Nam-Ra grabbed a flashcard, scribbling down; 'Su-Hyeok and Y/n, we're in the broadcasting room' before climbing down.
"You have to get it together. Everyone in here lost a friend, On-jo. Do you know how many people died? Why are you so..." Cheong-San stops himself, seeing the distraught girl turn to him. "There's just no one left that I like" On-Jo says, guiding her eyes back to the front as the zombies began to tear down the doors and windows. "Well, there are people who like you. Like-like your dad. You have to stay alive for them. Let's go" Eventually, the teenager also went down and Cheong-san was the only one left. However timing was significant in every life and death circumstance and it was like that for Cheong-san, who jumped out at the same time when the infected broke in.
"Su-Hyeok?" Y/n smiles before slipping inside the art room and puncturing a zombie with her mop that unfortunately broke in the process. Gliding on the floor, she stopped next to Su-Hyeok and beamed widely. "Found you!" Su-Hyeok lets out a muffled scream but calms down once he acknowledged the girl was his hoe, not a foe.
"Bloody hell y/n" The said girl merely nodded, eyeing the blocked door and wide-open window on the opposite wall. She silently motioned the boy to turn around, creating a plan just with gestures. "1,2,3 Go!"
"Cheong-San?" The teenager hanging on the hose looks up, watching his two best friends from the window of the art room. They were hardly staying on the wall, sticking like lizards. "I'd prefer you on a pole than a hose" Comments Y/n, who thankfully earned laughs than a paragraph with profanities.
"This virus. Tell me why? Why would you do something like this?" Jae-ik inquired, standing on his feet as he had just entered the room after a break. The call with y/n was dubious for him, as she was telling something about cannibalism and inhuman strength. Since the call got cut off halfway, Jae-Ik had no choice but to worry as he made his way back to Byeong Chan. And as soon as he heard the truth from him, Jae-Ik had immediately called back, but her phone was not answered.
"Detective, do you have any kids?" Jae-Ik sighs, shaking his head as a no. "Could you let your child die? No parent on Earth could do that" Lee Byeong Chan states, while the police officer groaned in irritation. "I don't wanna hear that bullshit. Just answer the question. What exactly is the virus and how-" Before he could question further, a fellow policeman slams open the door. "Jae-ik. Code red. Chief needs everyone right now. Come on, hurry!" Jae-ik quickly turns to Byeong Chan, who held a shocked expression, yet said his phrases with deceiving calmness. "It's too late. We're all dead. There's no hope for survival"
