Chapter Five

 "You don't have much, do you?" James asked.

 "No, not very much," Ginny replied. "But it's all right, because it means it won't take too long for me to unpack and get everything settled. Thank you helping get everything to my room, though. It was nice of you to offer to do."

 "Sure. Just being a good roommate. So, your mother know what you're up to?"

 "Well, I wrote home saying I have a job and a place to live. That's all they really know, though."

 "So, they don't know you're working the kitchen of a place called Johnny's and you're going to be living with a guy you've only known for a few weeks?"

 "Well, it would have been heard to explain that. You try explaining something like that to your parents."

 "I could try, if they were still alive."

 Ginny paused in what she was doing. "You mean-oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize."

 "It's okay. It was years ago, and I've moved on since then. So, what are your parents like? They must worry about you a lot of you don't want them knowing about this."

 "Oh, they are exactly those kind of parents. I come from a big family. I grew up with six brothers, and I was the youngest. Apparently my mother always wanted a daughter, so I hope she was happy when I came along. And even though they had seven kids to worry about, my parents always made time for us all."

 James whistled. "Wow. That actually sounds like an awesome childhood. I grew up the only child of a drunk married couple. Well, they weren't always drunk, but there were times when they were."

 "Oh. Well, I'm sorry if you grew up with bad parents. That sounds awful."

 "Well, no, they...I guess they weren't really bad parents, you know? But...they weren't exactly good ones, either." He sighed. "All right, enough with the sad stuff. We're officially roommates now, and that is supposed to be a happy occasion. You could even do something daring and shoot your parents an email about this. I guess I'm lucky, because I don't know how much of a difference this would have made to my parents."

 Ginny frowned. "Shoot them...an email?"

 "Uh...well, why don't you get in touch with them however you usually do, then? I'll, um, give you a little time to finish settling in."

 James went to the living room and sat down on the sofa. Ginny had looked like she really didn't know what emailing was. Who the hell wouldn't know what an email is?

 James pulled out his phone and texted Kevin, New roommate and I are officially roommates!

 About a minute later, Kevin texted back, Have I been proved right yet?

 James sighed, and wrote, NO! I told you we're just friends!

 "What's that?" Ginny asked, sitting down next to James.

 "Oh, I was just texting with Kevin. I told him you were moving in here."

 "What's texting?" she asked.

 "You don't know...texting, it's-" James held his phone, "Something you do with you phone?"

 Ginny looked lost, but then she said, "Oh, right. Of course. Telephone. I knew about that. 'Course I did. Um, how about I make lunch?"

 "Uh, yeah, sure, I guess. You're, um, not too familiar with modern technology, are you?"

 "Um...no, I suppose not. I'm going to go make that lunch now."

 She hurried off to the kitchen, leaving James to wonder about her.

~~~~~~
 "You're kidding me, right?" Kevin asked. "Please tell me you're joking."
 "It's not a joke," said James. "I'm telling you, man, there is something really weird about her. She didn't know about texting, and she looked like she had never even heard of emailing."
 "Well, who the hell never heard of emailing? All right, so you have a weirdo on your hands. A hot weirdo, but still weird. There is internet over in England, isn't there?"
 "Yeah, of course there is. Maybe she's just not up to date, you know? I don't know. There's just something really weird about Ginny, Kevin, and I don't know what it is or what to even think."
 "Well, she's your roommate now. You have to figure out how to live with her."
 James nodded. "Guess I'll have to."
