Chapter 9
Sorry about the long wait for the update! I started babysitting in the afternoon, so when I get home I go right to babysitting and after that's done I don't feel like writing. Sorry guys! I'll try to update sooner!
------
A week later…
I had gotten absolutely no breaks from practicing the change. Whenever Mason told me it was time to change, he wouldn't leave me alone until I changed. I wasn't changing everyday because Mason said it would tear me apart. It was yet another thing that I had to wait for, or develop the ability to do.
Being a werewolf gave me an infinite amount of goals to strive for.
I was staying awake through the change, but somewhere in all that pain, I'd lose my concentration and give in to the wolf.
It was a regular thing to wake up in a silver lined cage.
I hated this place. It was so boring. I needed to go shopping and get some things for my room. I needed some decor. The only personal belongings I had was my purse and the junk inside of it. When they kidnapped me they figured I might need my ID at some point.
Mason hadn't been careful to shield his pass code from me when we left the compound for training. Not that it mattered so much. I always had Chris' pass code.
He even took me through the 'back' entrance. He must really think that I wouldn't be able to figure anything out.
If he was smart, he wouldn't have let me know that there was another entrance. He should have taken me out the way Chris brought me in. He complained that it took too long to get in and out of. The back way only took three codes to get out.
So I made my way out of the compound. I felt so clever.
He really should have been more careful. I'm not some idiot that's not going to have a backup plan just in case the shit hit the fan.
I entered his codes and made it all the way outside. I knew they kept the car keys in the visor. I turned on the truck and waited a moment. If someone was supposed to stop me, I'd give them the opportunity.
No one came. So I left. It took me 40 minutes to find civilization. I took a couple of wrong turns and had to ask a couple for directions.
I had a feeling that I was going to get in a lot of trouble for being out of the compound without permission, but I'm an adult. I don't need to ask permission to leave.
Technically I did steal the car though. I pushed the thought back. I'd deal with trouble later, if I got in any.
I found a Walmart. They tended to be everywhere.
It was nice to be away from the werewolves and on my own. Fresh air without someone breathing down my neck felt amazing.
It was weird walking around the humans when I knew this huge secret and they thought everything was normal. There were werewolves living in their town.
It would be interesting to see what their reaction would be if they ever found out what their real neighbors are.
I grabbed some new colorful bedding, a foam pad (because that mattress sucks), and some random odds and ends so that my room had some personality.
I grabbed some fast food on my way back. The smell coming from the bag made my mouth water. I used to eat out almost every day. But since I've been here I hadn't eaten anything unhealthy. The soda tasted amazing.
I finished all the food before I got back to the compound. I punched in Mason's code and waited for the door to click. The only response I got was the code pad beeping at me.
I would be lying if I didn't have a moment of complete and utter horror. I would be in so much shit if I was caught red handed. Sure I could find my way back to the main house, but I'd have to explain everything. I wanted to skip that headache. Then I remembered I had Chris' codes to get back in.
I was counting on them not changing their codes regularly. Who would have the balls to try to escape?
I punched in Chris' code and felt relief flood thru me when the door clicked. Either they only changed Mason's codes, or they had separate codes to get in and out of the building. It was smart, but not nearly as smart as they thought.
I threw the fast food trash away on my way back to my room. I set the bags down and went through what I bought.
It took 2 hours to get everything just right. My favorite feature was the curtains I had strung over my bed. I weaved Christmas lights through so I'd have the illusion of sleeping under the stars.
With a smile I laid down. Now I liked this room and knowing that no one else here had one like mine made it even better.
"What the hell is this?" Mason's voice boomed.
He didn't even startle me this time. I was getting used to him barging in and scaring me half to death.
I slowly opened my eyes to look at him; he was looking at my decorations.
I smiled, "Doesn't it look a whole lot better now?"
He shook his head, not looking the least bit pleased. "Who did you trick into buying you all of this?"
"I didn't trick anyone. I bought it."
His eyes narrowed. "You expect me to believe that you got out of here all on your own."
I shrugged, "I came back. I just wanted to have a little decor."
"Then how did you get out and back in?" He obviously didn't believe me.
"Why should I tell you?" I sat up. "If I tell you I can't get out again."
"Did you steal pass codes?"
I shrugged, "Not maliciously."
"Whose pass code do you have?"
I smirked. What would he do if he knew I remembered his pass code? "What will you do to the person whose pass codes I have?"
He shrugged, "Teach them to not get fooled by a little girl."
I sighed. "I'm nearly 30. I'm hardly a little girl."
"Whose pass codes did you steal?" His bad mood was starting to show through.
I crossed my arms over my chest and shook my head defiantly. I would've told him if he hadn't been such a jerk. He could have asked nicely and I would've told him, but no, he was being a jerk.
He took three steps closer and was just on the line of my personal space. "You're going to tell me who you stole the codes from, now."
The compulsion to open my mouth and tell him exactly how I got the codes was overwhelming.
I really had no choice but to tell him.
"I used your pass code." He stilled. I couldn't help but smile a bit. "So what are you going to do to yourself, since you've been tricked by a 'little girl'?"
He rubbed his hand over his face. "I'll have to change the codes." He muttered as he turned away, walking out of my room.
"Are we still training today?" I asked hopefully.
He shook his head, "You've given me real work to do today. You can stay in here."
"I don't want to be in here all day!" I complained.
"Should've thought of that before you started taking pass codes." Then he shut my door.
I groaned. I couldn't believe he was bailing on me again. Not that it really mattered, he hadn't been a real help anyway.
I really didn't have anything to do in this little room. I should've bought something to do while I was out.
Then again, he hasn't changed the codes yet. My wolf whispered in my mind. We can still go practice outside.
I smiled and hopped off the bed. He probably expected me to sit there and listen like a good little girl.
I made my way out of the compound, keeping an eye out for Mason, just in case he waited for me to follow. I didn't want to get caught, least of all by him.
I didn't head towards the normal area we trained in. He'd probably go by there. I walked for maybe five minutes before stopping at a little clearing. I stripped down into nothing then started the change. I was terrified that I was going to lose control of my wolf and be in much more trouble than I already was today.
My bones shattered and reshaped. Fingernails transformed into claws. Fur sprouted from my skin.
And I stayed awake for all of it. The pain was indescribable. It wasn't something that
I'd wish on anyone.
I laid on the cold ground for a good five minutes. When I tried to stand I fell over. I couldn't stand on two legs anymore. I wobbled when I stood on all fours. It was weird to say the least. I felt a bit warmer than usual.
I stretched to get all the aches out of my joints and muscles. They warned me it would be a few hours before I could change back into a human, until then, I'd just have to experiment what it was like to be a wolf. It took a bit to start walking. I'd never had to coordinate walking with four legs. I'd get walking down before I tried jumping or running.
I heard a knock from something hitting a tree. My ear swiveled naturally. It was then that I noticed that everything felt different. My ears were in the wrong place; my fingers were all gone, shortened. They didn't function the same. It was like my new paws were meant to grip the ground, offering great traction if I felt like making sharp maneuvers.
When I looked around, I noticed my vision had changed. The colors were muddled, most of them not nearly as vibrant. Those that I could see were more amazing because of the contrast the grays made. Even from the loss of color, the image was still sharper than my human eyes could see.
I found a larger clearing that was free from the werewolves. I practiced my moves chasing whichever flying bugs I thought I could get.
A nip to my backside startled me. I whipped around and growled at the jerk who thought I could be snuck up on. I didn't have to worry about figuring out how to growl, it just happened.
This wolf was huge. I managed to look the wolf in the eye for maybe a second before my wolf told me I was going to be in some deep shit if I tried to fight this one. I dropped my eyes and crouched low against the ground so I wouldn't seem to be trying to take this wolf on.
The huge wolf took two big steps towards me.
I felt my control slip. Everything felt hazy.
Don't panic. My wolf was calm. She wasn't scared. You know him. Look at his eyes.
A sense of calm came through me when I looked at the wolf's eyes again. They were green and familiar.
Mason. The damn wolf that nearly scared me half to death was Mason.
That jerk.
I took advantage of my crouched position and pounced at him. He quickly side stepped like you would playfully avoid a toddler's touch.
For the next few hours my wolf and I tried to catch Mason. He was a lot harder to catch than those bugs had been.
The closest I got to catching him was getting a mouth full of tail fur. It was 100% unfair to try to and catch Mason. I knew I wouldn't get him, but it was still fun to try.
