Chapter 12

Reijn

My fingers run on their own, tapping every key with a certain melody attached to it. For more of a dramatic performance, I slow down hitting the keys with more force dragging out the beautiful sound that the piano has to offer.

"They're here, you have to find them." A feminine voice echoes faintly throughout the theatre. I ignore the voice and try to enjoy my pleasant dream.

"Reijn you must listen!" The mysterious sound yells out. My fingers come to a halt as I turn around in my seat to face the audience. The audience doesn't look fazed as if there wasn't a booming voice speaking. I turn back around and continue to play, starting over.

"You all are in danger!" The voice continues, but I focus on playing still ignoring the voice.

"Reijn! You have to find them!" The sound grows and I play louder drowning the voice out knowing it cant be real.

"Turn around Reijn!" the voice shouts, the amount of distress I could hear made me stand up and turn around. The audience is no longer there, they're replaced with men each wearing a suit and a black tie looking exactly alike. In unison, they stand up and applaud.

"Run Reijn!" The voice triggers the audience to stop applauding. I didn't have to be told twice as I ran to the back of the stage going for the exit. The aching pain my feet feel reminds me that I'm wearing high.

I reach the exit opening the door almost tripping and step outside. Instead of feeling the cold breeze of Paris I feel the sun's warmth on my pale skin. I look around using my hand to block the sun from my eyes to see my surroundings better.

Definitely not in Paris. The dirt on the side of the road makes that clear. I realize I'm in the middle of the road. There are no road signs to point me in the direction of the nearest town. I have to go either north or south.
Rather than guessing, I wait. An hour and a half I wait, standing in the middle of the road still in my dress I wore to my premiere. Not a single car has passed, the only thing that has moved was the sun. East. South-East. Taking off my heels, I walk south following the road. Time passes and no sign of any towns or cities.

Maybe I should've gone north.
The road turned into dirt a couple miles back, I'm afraid I'm lost. I continue walking, keeping my gaze on the floor. To calm myself down I think of a piece that I've played in the past. Though I can't play it I imagine myself playing it perfectly like I always did. My fingers tap on my dress as if I'm playing the piano and I sway my heels that are in my other hand. Although there is nothing but dirt, I tune out the rest of the world.
