Chapter 5-Pizza? Nope
Normally, after the game, Spencer takes the Lucky Charm out. It's 6:30, which means that I have an hour and a half before the time to go out with him. But, too bad, I'm not going out with him.
"Alessa, what are you going to wear?" Adriana, who is sitting beside me with a bowl of popcorn in her hands as we watch You've Got Mail by Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, grins at me. I didn't want to tell her yet. She'll probably smack my head and shout at me to go get ready. If I even was going to go out, I wouldn't get ready an hour and a half before it. Other girls, like Adriana, would. I've seen some other Lucky Charms wear dresses that are worthy of the Red Carpet while Spencer would just wear a shirt with jeans.
"Nothing. I'm not going out with him."
"Yeah, right." She rolls her eyes and eats more popcorn. "You should wear that modest green dress of yours." Modest. She means it barely covers my bottom and I had to pull it on several occasions when I wore it.
"First of all, it's not even close to modest. You saw how I kept on pulling it down. Secondly, I'm not going out with Spencer." She replies playfully, "Yes, you are. You have to go. When you grow up and your kids ask you what naughty things you did when you were younger, what will you say? I did nothing since I was a scaredy cat." At the last part she imitates my voice-or at least tries- and makes a face.
"I was going to give you a nasty look, but I see you already have one." I smile after this. Look who's talking. When she was going to go out with a cute guy called Lucas, she refused like me and when I made a face, she said the same sentence. I left her alone after a while, but she didn't go. That should shut her up.
"You're right." Finally, we're done with this argument. "Which is all the more reason why you should go. I didn't and I would do almost anything to change that." Darn it, my plan backfired. From the look on her face, she won't leave me alone until I go out with Spencer.
"Fine. But the next time you have a date, don't chicken out, deal?"
Deal
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Why did I agree to do this?"
"You agreed because I have an A in Language Arts and can do persuasive speeches very well." She smiles as she does my makeup, while I scowl at her. She touches my forehead and clucks her tongue, "Tsk, tsk. Don't scowl."
"Just finish the make-up. You make me feel like I'm Heidi Klum, or something." She begins to whistle the Smurfs' tune while she swipes randomly at my face with a brush. When she finishes, I find that she did a pretty good job, but it's too much for me. I'm wearing a light blue dress and a bow on my hair. It looks a little girly, but that's what I'm aiming for. The make-up she did for me is purple eye-shadow with a little gold at the tip.
I walk up to the mirror and take a long look at it, and the picture of the Mercedes S350 that is stuck beside the mirror. I take a picture, and set it as the background image for my iPhone 5s. Then, I wash it off and wear my flats, grabbing my purse and leaving. "You look awesome! Go, have fun." Adriana winks at me, and I'm grateful my mom didn't see that. As I walk outside, I hear Adriana say, "But not too much fun. Stay safe!"
"Next time you see me, remind me not to talk to you. And not to let my mom talk to you." I yell back at her and hear her laugh. I start walking toward my bike, but see Spencer standing on the porch wearing a dark green shirt that is tucked in and dark-washed jeans. At least he's got taste in clothing.
"Hey, Lessy."
"Hi."
"Shall we go?"
"Where?"
"It's a surprise."
"How did you know my address?" Stalker, I think to myself but I don't say that, since I don't want to offend him or fight.
"I asked your friend."
"The one that's probably watching us right now." I mumble, not intending for him to hear, but he does, and chuckles.
"She is."
We get into the back seat of his car-a dark blue Mercedes S350-and a man that seems around his mid-thirties drives. I know the type because it's my dream car. I have pictures on my room, and my mother is going to buy it for me for my eighteenth birthday. I inhale the scent of the leather and touch it, looking at the orange lights and beige interior.
"Never seen a Mercedes?" Spencer asks.
"I have, but this is one of my favourites. I'm getting it on my eighteenth birthday."
"Do you even know the name?"
"It's a Mercedes S350."
"When did you have time to look for cars? Most girls your age think of magazines and dresses and other girly things. I'm not saying they all do, but most are shallow like that."
"I'm not most girls." I sigh.
"I'm guessing it's not the first time you've said that."
"It's not." I smile a bit.
After that, we stay silent for a while, until it's time to go.
"Here, tie this." He holds a strip of green silk and I take it, tying it around my hair. "Not your hair, silly. Your eyes." Weirdly, I'm not feeling shy like I would have normally at the way he looks at me.
"May I?" Huh? May he what? The blindfold, right. I nod and he stands behind me, tying it.
"Does it need adjustment?" He asks and I shake my head, "It's fine." He places his warm hands on my shoulders and I let him, just because he's going to lead me to the restaurant. I hope it's not Italian, because that's too easy for him. But I wouldn't want a guy to kill himself trying to impress me.
He starts walking forward, while I stumble around. Suddenly, he says,"There's a stair step." I hear that a second too late and fall backwards onto his hard chest. He holds me there for a second and I feel my heart rate increase. Is it because of him? No, no. It's because I nearly fell down. I regain my balance and walk forward, not falling on the step this time. Two more steps and they're over. I hear a familiar Japanese voice and smell something fishy. It is, indeed, the smell of fish.
"Mori Sushi." I blurt out and take the blindfold off, turning to Spencer and raising an eyebrow. "How did you know? Did Adriana tell you?"
"Know what?"
"This is my favourite restaurant." It's true. I could be blindfolded and would still recognise it. Wait, I already did.
"My father owns it."
"Your father is Japanese? I don't think so."
"He co-owns it."
"Makes sense."
"Actually, it is mine, too."
"I bet you say that to all the ladies." I tease.
He smirks, "Nah. They do that for me."
I roll my eyes, "Let's just go."
He chuckles, "As you say."
I give him the blindfold and we enter the Japanese restaurant. We walk forward and Hiro, the main waiter, greets me, "Konichiwa, Alessa."
"Hiro! Konichiwa." I hug him. I've known him since I was a little girl.
"Hello, Spencer."
"Hiro." He said it like he's Hiro's boss, which is a little rude since the man is probably four decades older than both of us and has wrinkles all over his face.
Hiro leads us towards a table that has a mini aquarium with red fish and blue fish. One fish, two fish. Red fish, blue fish. Apparently, I said it out loud because Spencer laughs and says, "Dr.Seuss?"
"What's so funny?"
"It's just that it's been years since I read anything by that man. Heck, it's been years since I read books for pleasure." I'm not surprised. He's probably too busy wooing the ladies to do anything.
Hiro gives us two menus and I look through, checking for the daily special.
I'm getting four Hanami rolls, which have Philadelphia cheese and salmon, and four Italian rolls, which have salmon, cheddar cheese and black olives, with nuts and avocado.
"What are you getting?" Spencer looks up from the menu.
"Four Hanami rolls and four Italian rolls."
"Alright."
"I'm paying for myself, though."
"And what kind of a gentleman would I be if I let you do that?"
"Who said you're a gentleman?" I tease.
"Ouch. I'm hurt." He places a hand on his chest and fakes a look, sticking out his bottom lip and giving me poppy dog eyes.
"Save it, we both know you're as much of a gentleman as I'm a lady." This makes him chuckle and he orders eight salmon rolls with Philadelphia cheese.
"Drinks?"
"Mango and peach juice."
"Orange juice."
Hiro leaves to prepare our food, and we sit in an awkward silence. At least it's awkward for me, Spencer, here, looks like he's right at home.
"Do you have a map?" Spencer asks out of the blue.
"Umm, no. Why?"
"Because I'm getting lost in your eyes and need directions to your heart." That was the cheesieat pick-up line I've ever heard.
"You need directions to your house."
"You can come along the way." He wiggles his eyebrows suggestively, making me blush and look away.
Hiro is a hero. He saved me from even more embarrassment and got our orders. "Arigato." I thank him and he smiles at me, winking.
I use the chopsticks to eat the sushi, while Spencer uses a fork. Of all things you can use to eat sushi.
"Spencer." I roll my eyes.
"Lessy."
"Use your chopsticks."
"No."
"Why not? It's simply rude to the creators of sushi."
"I can't use them. I don't know how." This makes me laugh. His father is the owner, and he doesn't know how to use chopsticks?
"Let me teach you."
"People tried to. It didn't work."
"Bring it on."
-----------------------------------------------------------
"This is hopeless. Why can't you balance the roll?" I shouldn't have taken this challenge. It really is hopeless. Whenever he tries to grab the sushi roll, the sticks swerve and form the shape of an X. It's like the X-Factor, and he would've gotten a buzz for every failed attempt. Suddenly, an idea pops in my head.
"Spencer. I have an idea."
"That's what you said twenty minutes ago."
"This time, it will work. Hopefully. Give me the chopsticks." He hands them over and I get a piece of paper, rolling it like a cinnamon roll. Or a sushi roll. Then, I get a thin rubber band from my purse, and put the roll of paper between the sticks, tying it with the rubber band. Now the chopsticks are forming an upside-down V.
"Here you go." I give him the new chopsticks and he tries them on a roll. Thankfully, it works. Finally.
We finish the rest of our food, pay the bill, and head to the Mercedes.
"Thank you for the sushi." I say.
"You're welcome. Thanks for teaching me the chopstick stuff." He says and I grin.
"No problem."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Bye." I wave slightly and get out of the car, walking toward the front door of my house.
"Wait." Spencer says and I turn. "I should walk you to the door. Like a gentleman."
"Haven't we already established that you aren't one?"
He merely laughes at this as I take out my keys from my bag. I open the door and see my mother standing there, smiling.
"Hello, Spencer. Do you have your things packed?"
"Hello, Mrs.Capello. No, I haven't packed my clothes, why would I need to?"
"Well, your parents are travelling for a few weeks, maybe a month. So, you'll be staying with us for a while. I hope you have a good time, here."
I look at Spencer in shock, and he smiles, winking.
"Don't worry, Mrs.Capello, I sure will."
This is going to be one long month.
