Chapter One; Aiming Practice
Hi everyone! This is my first story on Wattpad, and my first fanfic. I hope you guys like it. If you have any recommendations, please post a comment!
**Hiccup's POV**
I woke up and stretched. The sun was just rising, but I had to get to the academy early. Today, I would be working with the other dragon riders and their dragons on aiming.
Why so early? Well, I'm chief now, and there are aways matters to take care of. Hopefully, I can get the lesson done in time to work.
I pulled on my flight suit, and crept down the stairs, careful not to wake my mother. I walked out the door, and made my way towards where I kept Toothless, my Night Fury. However, when I got there, the black dragon was no where to be seen.
Cloudjumper sidled over to me.
"Hey, Cloudjumper," I said,"Say, have you seen Toothless?"
He shook his head.
"No? Alright."
He can't have gone far, he can't fly without me. I began to look all over. I couldn't find him, and all of the villagers I asked hadn't seen him since yesterday.
I was beginning to get worried, when a black figure trotted up behind me. I sighed in relief.
"Hey, bud. I'm glad to see you too," I said as he started licking me,"C'mon, it's time to go to the academy."
I just assumed he had gone fishing as we took off into flight. Toothless and I began doing stunt dives, just to let off some energy. As well pulled up, three feet above the water, a blue and yellow figure zoomed past us.
"Hey, you!" I yelled.
"Nice morning for a flight, I'd say!" Astrid called back. She pulled Stormfly up beside Toothless,"Come on! Last one to the academy is a rotten dragon egg!" She took off.
"Just you wait," I mumbled,"Lets go, Toothless, and show her who really is the rotten dragon egg."
Astrid arrived at the academy about thirty seconds after I did.
"Beat you," I pointed out.
She was about to replay, when the twins tumbled into the academy.
"It was totally my fish!" Tuffnut exclaimed.
"No, it was Barf's!"
"Was not! It belonged to Belch! He caught it!"
"Moron, you just said it was yours!" Ruffnut shot back.
At that moment, the twin's dragon, a Hideous Zippleback, flew in. It had two heads, perfect for the twins. Ruff ran over to the left head.
"Barf, wasn't that your fish!?" The dragon just looked at her, confused.
"Ruff, Tuff, could you please stop arguing? Its getting annoying!" Astrid said, aggravated.
"No, I'm-"
"Ruffnut!" someone called from the sky. Hookfang and Snotlout hung over them.
"Ugh!" Ruff rolled her eyes.
"Dude! She's mine!" A new voice entered the conversation.
Fishlegs approached Hookfang on Meatlug.
Before Snotlout could respond, I called them both to the ground, and explained how to aim your dragons fire.
"The key is to help as little as possible, the dragons know what they're doing, you just have to make sure your dragon's aiming at the right target," I explained.
I showed every one a variety of targets I had arranged.
"Each one of your dragons must hit all of these, with you on their backs."
"That's easy," Snotlout mumbled.
"But, there's a twist. There's a certain order in which you must hit them"
"Oh," I heard Fishlegs say, disappointed.
I walked over to the third target, and drew a huge "1" on it. Then, I drew a "2" on the fifth one, a "3" on the fourth one, a "4" on the first one, and a "5" on the second one.
"Your dragons will hit all five of these targets, in the order of the numbers. Snotlout,-"
"Uh," Ruffnut butted in,"how are our dragons supposed to hit the targets?"
"Yeah," Tuffnut added,"they'll just blow them to bits."
"The targets are made of Gronkle Iron, the worst the fire will do to them is leave a smudge," I explained,"Now, Snotlout, Hookfang, you first."
"What!? Why me?"
I glared at him as I lead the rest of the group to the side if the arena. He climbed on Hookfang, and lifted into the air.
They were doing quiet well, until Snotlout attempted to redirect Hookfang away from target number 4, and towards target number 3. As he grasped Hookfang's horns and pulled, Dragon and Viking crashed to the ground.
"Ahhh, you see, Snotlout pulled too hard on Hookfang's horns. As I was saying-"
"Hold up, I barely pulled! I pull harder than that in races!"
"As I was saying, you need to help as little as possible. If your dragon's heading for the wrong target, a slight tap on their side with your foot is enough to redirect them. Believe it or not, aiming fire takes a lot of concentration from a dragon. If you distract them, well, you saw what just happened. Here, I'll demonstrate," I said, hopping on Toothless.
We preformed the task flawlessly, and by the time we landed, everyone was cheering, except Snotlout.
"Yeah, well, you ride a Night Fury. You know, they never miss," Snotlout pointed out grumpily.
"Okay, Fishlegs, you next," I said, ignoring Snotlout.
Fishlegs climbed on Meatlug and lifted off into flight. They did a few circles around the ring, so Meatlug could gain her bearings, before they went into shooting mode.
They missed the first one, but got every other one after that.
"Good job, Fishlegs. Twins, you're up next. I want Barf to aim gas, and I want Belch to light it. And, please, do the targets individually," I said.
"Will do, Cheif," Ruff saluted as the twins boarded the two-headed dragon.
Barf began to blow gas.
"Oh, no," I said. I should of known I couldn't stop them.
"Lets blow this place, Belch!" Tuff exclaimed. The next moment, the arena was engulfed in ignited gas. By the time it cleared, everyone was singed and all five targets were knocked over.
"That's absolutely not what I meant!"
"Fine, do you want us to do it again?" Tuffnut asked.
"No, we don't have time. Astrid, you're up," I called to my girlfriend. She eagerly climbed on Stormfly, her Deadly Nadderhead.
Astrid and Stormfly executed the task effortlessly, and hit every target, all in the right order.
"Now that's how you aim fire!" I said proudly.
"Show off," Snotlout mumbled as he exited the academy, Hookfang on his heels.
Astrid glared at him and drew her axe from Stormfly's saddle. I stopped her with my hand,"Leave him." She put down her axe, but by her face, she would still kill him for a cup of rotten yak milk.
"Alright, everyone. Lesson's over," I told Fishlegs and the twins. Fishlegs climbed on Meatlug, and directed her out of the arena. Ruff and Tuff left the ring, still fighting about a fish. I turned to Astrid.
"Wanna go for a fly?" she asked.
"Sorry, chief duties," at Astrid's down face, I continued,"but I promise tonight we'll go on a night flight, just us. And our dragons of course."
"Alright!" she exclaimed excitedly,"Meet me at the cove!" She ran over and kissed me, then climbed on Stormfly, and lifted into the air.
I watched as she disappeared over the horizon. Toothless nudged my arm.
"Alright bud, I'm coming!" I said as I climbed on my Night Fury. As soon as I was secure, he leapt into the air. He swooped over houses and fields, and in under two minutes, was outside my house.
I pat Toothless on the head, scratched Cloudjumper under the chin, and walked inside. I was halfway up the stairs, when I realized I had forgotten to feed Toothless!
I ran back downstairs, filled a bucket with ten large fish, and dashed back outside. I walked to where I left Toothless, but he wasn't there! I looked at Cloudjumper, who shrugged, then stuck his tongue into the bucket.
I looked around, then noticed that he must have alpha duties. That was probably why he was gone earlier. It had only been two weeks since the battle with Drago Bloodvist, and I was still getting used to the fact of Toothless being alpha. He was probably still getting used to me being chief! Both if us were still not used to our flights being limited.
I left the bucket next to Cloudjumper, then walked back inside. I sat down at my desk, and began responding to the many letters I had been sent.
