Chapter 9

The battle continues. Mary and I crawl. Mary is holding Blackie. Finally, we can walk. When we get up, we realize we crawled a long ways. Our hands and knees are dirty. We walk and soon we hear more city noises. "Are those noises coming from Seaside City?" asked Mary.

"There's only one way to find out!" I answered. We ran to the noise. I heard cars and people. Mary and I finally came to the city. Blackie meowed in delight. Mary squealed, and I did a happy dance. "Let's go get some food and water!" I yelled. We ran onto the sidewalk. We went into a grocery store, where we got a bag of apples and two bottles of water with our left over money. We went into an alleyway and ate and drank. I realized Mary had lots of holes in her dress. "Mary, I'm going to get us more money and we're going to find you a dress," I said.

"Okay," said Mary. We packed up. I saw the newspaper stand man was talking to a woman.

"Our delivery girl is very sick, ma'am. We have to wait until someone can make the run today," he said. I walked up to him.

"I can do it," I said.

"That would be wonderful!" exclaimed the man. He took out a map with red lines on it. "Just deliver papers to the houses with red dots on them," he said. I nodded. He handed me a papers and put them in my bag. I took the map. "Young lady, can you please help me deliver these boxes?" he asked Mary. She nodded.

"Meet me back here later," I whispered in Mary's ear. She nodded. I ran with my stuff. I ran to the first house. I saw she hadn't picked up her newspaper from earlier. It was on her door step. I left the new paper on her door step and went to the next house. There was twenty six houses I had to stop at. I ran and delivered a lot of papers. Finally, I had one left. I walked up to the house. It was a mansion. It was tall and huge. Gardens surrounded it. I saw maids cleaning the windows. Own maid was watering the plants. I walked up to the door step. The maid that was watering the pants stopped and came over to me.

"Are you the new delivery girl?" she asked.

"Yes ma'am. I think only for today though," I told her. She nodded.

"Can you please tell Mr. Tiger, the man that you are working for, that his wife needs some sugar?" she asked.

"Yes ma'am," I answered.

"Thanks!" she said. So, this was the man's house. Well, I ran back to him. I delivered the message.

"Here's your pay, twenty dollars," he said.

"Thanks," I said.

"Do you two have a home?" he asked. We shook our heads no. "Why don't you come live with me? My wife wanted to have kids," he told us. We smiled. Maybe he could be our father.
