Chapter 4
After a long day of trekking through the territory, Frozenpaw entered the apprentices den. She flopped down in her nest, to tired to do much more. Whitepaw gazed at her "How was it?" Frozenpaw sighed "Why does the world have to be so unfair? We don't get a say in anything! Just because we aren't toms" Foxpaw looked up from his nest "Shut up. I'm trying to sleep"
Frozenpaw felt like she wanted to explode 'And you stupid furball shut your mouth' Whitepaw seemed to read her thoughts and gazed at her sympathetically. She sighed "Sorry Foxpaw....it won't happen again..."
Foxpaw narrowed his eyes "I hope so or I'll tell Bluestar" he smirked, curling back up. 'Why do toms always have to be so complicated?' Whitepaw gazed at her and whispered "Sorry Frozenpaw, but it looks like we can't talk now" Frozenpaw nodded, curling up beside her sister. Whitepaw cuddled up beside her "Don't worry sis, we'll make it through this" She felt comforted by these words and drifted off to sleep.
"Frozenpaw!" She awoke as Foxpaw slapped her. "Wake up furball!" She blinked "What? Foxpaw? What do you want? It's the middle of the night" Foxpaw slapped her again "Shut up! It is the middle of the night and you woke me up! You were snoring again!" He growled, his gaze furious. "Sorry Foxpaw....I didn't mean to wake you up" Whitepaw had also woken up by then. "Why are you shouting?" Foxpaw snarled "Because your sister was snoring very loud and woke me up!" Whitepaw sighed "It probably won't happen again, right Frozenpaw?" Foxpaw growled "It was the third time in five days!" Frozenpaw sighed "Sorry. I'll go to the medicine den and ask for help" Foxpaw slapped her again "Are you crazy?! You shouldn't wake Hawkstone in the middle of the night. You should sleep outside, so we all can get some peace" She sighed, knowing she had to obey. "Yes Foxpaw..." She padded out of the den. The wind was howling and cold. The weather had gotten colder as leafbare was nearing. Frozenpaw curled up between a couple of reeds, which held off the wind. Soon she was able to fall asleep once more.
Frozenpaw was wandering along the lake. The wind was blowing through her fur. She shivered. The lake looked dark and cold as the wind sent ripples across the surface. She made sure to keep her distance. Rabbitfur had often told her to stay away from the lake, until she could swim. She always said "The lake is dangerous! Stay away from it. You can practice at the streams and rivers" Frozenpaw sighed. Rabbitfur always talked about how dangerous it was and how helpless they were, without a mate. The wind grew stronger and caught her by surprise. It almost knocked her over. If there hadn't been a tree there, it probably would have succeeded. Frozenpaw climbed up the tree. Then, as the wind blew stronger once more, she heard the tree crack. She froze. It cracked again. And then, she fell. But she didn't just fall. The branch rapidly rolled down to the lake, with Frozenpaw still clinging to it. Her panicked screams were muffled, every time she was buried beneath the branch. Then the branch hit a stone and Frozenpaw was flung into the lake. Her fur immediately soaked and grew heavy. She took one last breath and then the cold waves covered her. 'Is this how I die? Do I drown in the lake, without anyone knowing?'
