Chapter 9: Plantar
"And this is Bessie!" Hop Pop said, petting...a giant purple snail with an almost golden shell to it.
Anne blinked. "Huh! Cool!" She said, her own golden armor shining brighter than Bessie's shell. She knew she probably shouldn't be wearing the armor ALL the time...but it was shiny. Not to mention, the only REAL clothing she had other than her school uniform.
It was also easy to wash. Just grab a hose and fire away.
Bessie let out a purr or noise of some kind as she nuzzled Anne, with the human laughing. "Awww, she likes me!"
Hop Pop chuckled before attaching a cart to Bessie, and hopping onto the seat. "Well, I'm gonna run some errands. Mind coming with? I could use the extra help."
Anne hummed, scratching her chin. "I DO hate responsibility...but then again, I've been here for 3 weeks and you guys haven't kicked me out yet, sooo...yeah! As long as there's no monsters to fight!" She said, getting on the cart next to Hop Pop.
Hop Pop chuckled before his face went grave. "THAT'S WHAT I WISH..."
Anne blinked before coughing. Ever since she found herself in Amphibia, she found herself going on MANY wacky adventures that would make this story too long. So far? She had been inside this crazy dimension for 3 weeks. And there was two wacky adventures every week.
She broke Hop Pop's cane, fought monsters, moved in with Sprig, fought monsters, tried to befriend a caterpillar that looked like her cat back home, fought monsters, tried to cook a pizza and got Sprig engaged, fought monsters, lost her phone's battery life, fought monsters, had a weird dream about Marcy, fought monsters, watched Hop Pop run for mayor, had a vision of some girl in crimson armor-
Oh, yeah. That last one's probably something to bring up.
One night, she had woken up to get...some kind of vision. Of a woman in crimson gladiator hammer, wielding a giant hammer as an army was behind her. Her eyes were a glowing pink, and actually...threatening.
Anne was lost in her thought for a while before turning to Hop Pop, who was looking like he wanted SOMETHING to fill the void.
Hop Pop was sweating bullets before he cleared his throat. "...so, do you have a boyfriend back home-"
Anne, as if it was instinct, kicked Hop Pop off the cart as Bessie kept sliding by. Anne had no regrets.
Hop Pop, after grabbing some seeds from a nearby shop, hopped back onto the cart and pulled the reigns, sending Bessie off again.
Anne hummed. "So...I look like Heart, right?"
Hop Pop chuckled. "Yes! It's actually shocking! I never met her sadly, but? She was a hero. Especially to this little town of Wartwood. Her words inspire a lot of frogs, and the fact that you found her armor and defended us? I'd say you earned the frogs' respect very quickly."
Anne laughed. "I guess I'm pretty lucky I grave robbed." She then blinked. "That doesn't sound right."
"No. No, it doesn't."
Anne then faced him. "But as I was trying to say...so many of you always talk about Heart. How she fought and what she was like...but there were THREE Stars. What were the other two?"
Hop Pop hummed. "Oh! Strength and Wit. Now Strength? Ohoho, she was quite the warrior. More than Heart ever was, and would've been leader if she wasn't so aggressive. Heart and Strength even fought for leadership once! They were close, yet always at each other's throats."
"Kinda like siblings." Anne giggled.
Hop Pop nodded. "But anyway, Strength was quite ruthless in battle. She was kind in her own way, but also incredibly tempered. However? She only fought for those close to her and protected the Toads, becoming their Queen."
"Queen." Anne breathed. "Wow...heh. The more I think about it? Kinda reminds me of Sasha. She would always pick fights with the bigger kids whenever they picked on US."
Hop Pop smiled. "She sounds nice."
"Yeah, nice!" Anne said. "I mean, sure! The things she does kinda make me nervous! But who cares? If a friend likes a pencil case, you get it for them. If your friend likes your new shoes, you give them to her! And if a friend steals a magical music box from a thrift store on your birthday, even if you REALLY don't want her too, you let her do it! Because if you put too much pressure on her, she won't wanna be your friend anymore!"
Hop Pop immediately retracted his statement. "...uhhh...Anne? Are you alright?"
"Yeah! Yeah! Totally fine!"
"I might want a stern talking too with this Sasha." Hop Pop said. "Cause it sounds to me like you two have some communication issues."
"No, no, no! No issues whatsoever!" Anne reassured.
"Anne. I've lived for a long time." Hop Pop said. "I know what a friend is and what isn't. There are some good things about this Sasha girl...but I'm starting to think you should talk with her about how you feel. You said you had another friend?"
"Yeah, Marcy!"
"Does SHE make you do things that you don't wanna do?" Hop Pop asked.
Anne shook her head. "No. Not really. Unless you count video games or this roleplaying game she likes...to be fair, she makes it fun. She's just super distracted all the time. And the more I think about it? She doesn't really ASK for a whole lot." She suddenly grew concerned. "I hope I didn't put too much pressure on her..."
Hop Pop's eyes softened. "Hey, now. No friendship is perfect. Talk to both of them about this once we find them, alright? I just don't want ya getting hurt by this, Anne. Friendship is a tough thing to get. It's even harder to handle when you lose it."
Anne sighed and nodded. "I will...so, back to Strength. First, why is her and Heart's names that?"
Hop Pop shrugged. "That's just how we remember them. They had real names, I'm sure."
"Huh...so, who's the new Toad Queen since she's gone?"
Hop Pop shrugged again. "My guess is that they choose a new Queen through brutality and fighting. Toads are like that."
Meanwhile...
The Toad Queen tapped her fingers on the armrest of her throne before a jester of some kind walked in. Or rather, an armored toad that just wore a jester hat. She smiled. "Ah! Percy! Perfect timing! I'd like a report."
"Oh, right! The mountains are starting to clear up!" Percy said. "We should be where this 'Anne' is next week!"
"Good. Good...I want to see her with my own eyes."
"This Heart impostor?" Percy asked.
The Toad Queen was silent before nodding. "Yes...this impostor."
