Chapter 7

Saturday

Standing in front of the mirror, Patton locked eyes with his reflection.

A pair of brown eyes flecked with gold stared back at him, identical to his own.

"Do I look okay?" Patton asked quietly.

"Dad, you look great. Mr. Stone is going to love it," Virgil said. He was sitting on the bed, swinging his legs as he watched his father at the mirror.

Patton turned to look at him, a slight and worried smile on his face. "You think so?"

Virgil returned the slight smile and nodded.

Patton stepped away from the mirror, taking a deep breath. He remembered for about the billionth time the moment when Logan had asked him out on this date.

Last Saturday

"Why thank you," Logan said, his face noticeably bright red, causing Patton to smile. "Patton, may I ask you a question?"

"Yeah, of course," the barista answered casually, though he hoped his nervousness didn't show through his voice.

Logan nodded slightly, awkwardly. He took a deep breath, then offered the vase of flowers to Patton, who hesitantly took them, smiling wider now, "My favorites. Thank you."

Logan nodded again. He fidgeted with his fingers, forcing himself to meet the other's eyes. "Patton, would you like to go on a date with me?"

Patton froze, more in surprise than anything else. "Am I dreaming?" he mumbled under his breath, clutching the vase in his hands.

Logan didn't hear him. He chewed his lip, still fidgeting and watching him expectantly. These were all feelings he hadn't felt in a while. Nervousness danced through his body, and he had jittery, bouncing sensations in his chest. In this moment, the teacher felt like he was one of his high school students.

"Yes . . ." Patton answered, his voice soft.

All at once, Logan stopped fidgeting, and his teeth, which snagged his lip, slowly released it, leaving his mouth a little pink. "R-really?" Logan inwardly cringed at his stutter.

Patton nodded, smiling. He picked one of the flowers out of the vase, then tucked the long stem behind his ear. Seeing this sight caused Logan to smile at just how adorable and innocent he looked. "So, how's next Saturday?"

"I'll have to take off work for the day, but other than that, I'm good," Patton answered.

Logan nodded, feeling awkward even still, but slowly relaxing, just focusing on Patton, and the strong feelings he had for him.

"I'll be back," Patton said, disappearing for a few moments to leave the vase of flowers with Virgil before returning to the teacher.

Once he returned, Logan noticed the flower behind his ear was starting to fall, and he impulsively reached out, pushing the bright flower back behind Patton's ear.

The barista's face turned a soft shade of red, and he giggled softly at the contact.

Upon hearing the sound Patton made, Logan's face seemed to light up, and a wide smile spread across his face.

What was Patton doing to him? He asked himself constantly. And why didn't he mind it one bit?

"Now, how about a coffee?" Patton asked.

"I'd love one," Logan responded, his smile staying.

Present

Virgil stood now, looking up at his father.

As Patton stared down at him, he couldn't help but notice all of Virgil's similarities. Not only to his parents, but to himself.

Virgil had his mother's wide, thoughtful and attentive brown eyes. When he'd been younger, he had dark blond hair, which slowly turned into a dark brown as he got older, reminding Patton of melted chocolate, in a way.

Sometimes, the jealous younger brother in Patton came out, and he thought about how glad he was that Virgil barely shared any resemblance to his father, August. Sure, he loved his brother, especially now that he was gone, but personally, he loved Nina a bit more, like a close sister. And now he couldn't help but notice how much Virgil acted like her, like a quiet, strong storm.

"Dad?"

Patton blinked, snapping out of his thoughts. "Hm?"

Virgil tilted his head to the side a bit in confusion. "Uh, Mr. Stone—er, Logan is here."

Patton's eyes widened a bit in surprise. He turned his head, peering out the window. Sure enough, there was Logan's car, idling in front of the house. He watched a moment longer, and saw Logan get out of the car, holding something in his hand. He adjusted his tie before walking towards the front door and disappearing from Patton's view.

A minute or so later, the sound of the doorbell rang through the rather empty and quiet house. Patton glanced at Virgil. His son hesitated for a moment, then grabbed Patton's hand, pulling him downstairs.

"Woah! Virge, slow down!!"

Virgil didn't reply. He continued to pull Patton, until they stood right in front of the door. "You have all your stuff, right?" Virgil asked, his voice a little rushed.

Patton didn't seem to notice this. He checked his pockets, then nodded.

Virgil glanced at his father, then opened the door.

Logan stood outside patiently, his hands clasped in front of him, with a small bouquet of flowers in his grasp.

"Greetings, Virgil," the teacher greeted.

The teenager only waved slightly in return. He practically pushed Patton towards the open doorway, since he'd been hiding behind the door.

The two men's eyes locked with each other's, and their eyes widened in sync.

"Woah . . ." Patton remarked with a nervous smile.

"Nikola Tesla . . ." Logan said after, eyes trailing down, but only to see Patton's outfit.

The barista wore a light blue button-up shirt, and khakis. His brand new, dark brown dress shoes seemed to shine.

Meanwhile, Logan wore a white button-up, and navy dress pants, along with a matching tie.

Virgil looked between the two, who couldn't seem to keep their eyes off of each other.

It was the typically stoic man who broke the rather comfortable silence. "Are you ready to go?"

Patton hesitated. He looked at Virgil. "You have your phone, right?"

He nodded.

"Okay, please call me if you need anything." He leaned over, kissing Virgil on his forehead softly. "I love you, Virge."

"I love you, too," Virgil quietly returned, smiling slightly.

Patton turned back to Logan. "Okay, I'm ready now."

Logan nodded. He hesitated like Patton had done before, then offered his arm to his date. The other man looked a bit surprised, but giggled quietly and looped his arm with Logan's, letting him lead him to the car.

Virgil watched them for a moment before closing the door.

Little did Patton know, Virgil had his own plans for the day.
