I groaned as Olivia defeated me in the Survival Games again. “You’re too good!” I cried. However, before she could reply, I heard a knock at the door. I took off the headset and went to investigate. When I opened the door, a man in a suit was standing there.
“We know your secret,” he told me.
“What?” I cried. “What secret?”
The man looked me dead in the eye and said, “Darren, you are being arrested for impersonating a famous YouTuber by the name of SkyDoesMinecraft. Please come with me.”
“No!” I shouted, “That’s impossible!” The man took no notice of my pleas and dragged me away by my arm. We got in a van and drove to a courtroom.
“Darren. You have been found guilty of this crime. The penalty is death,” the judge announced.
Then a man approached me with a gun, and everything blacked out.
~o~O~o~
“No!” I shouted, sitting up in my chair, heart racing. It was just a dream, nothing more than that. I wasn’t being killed. I was fine.
When had I fallen asleep? I had been playing Minecraft with Olivia. We had done some things on my server, played some survival games… I must have dropped asleep sometime during the game.
I heard a buzzing sound and reached into my pocket. My phone was ringing. I answered it and a slightly annoyed voice rang through.
“Dude, where are you? We’ve been waiting here for like, ten minutes,” the caller said. Waiting? My dream couldn’t be coming true, could it? They had no way of knowing. Nobody knew my secret. I was almost absolutely sure that I was fine. Almost.
“I’ll be there in a second,” I said nervously, hanging up the phone. What if they did know? I had no idea what would happen. After all, this had never happened before. What would the penalty be? It wouldn’t be death… would it?
I threw open the door to my room and rushed downstairs. The front door was made of a translucent glass, so I couldn’t make out the identity of the person outside. With a deep breath, I opened the door. I recognised the guy in front of me right away, and I smiled. “There you are, Adam,” Jason said.
“Where’s Ty?” I asked, remembered the conversation we had earlier.
“He said he can get to my house by himself,” Jason said. “We’ll meet him there.”
“Cool,” I said, following him to the car. “So what have you got planned for today?”
Jason shrugged. “Nothing much. Ty said he got a new movie, so we can watch that. He didn’t tell me which movie he chose though.”
We got into the car, and Jason started it up. He turned up the radio and started driving. I made sure to watch him carefully. If I did end up having to drive, I wanted to know exactly how I could do so. It didn’t seem too hard. Then again, that was what I had said when I had tried to bake a cake for my mum’s birthday. That hadn’t ended well.
My mum. How was she doing? Suddenly I felt overwhelmed with homesickness. I wondered if Adam had told her the problem. I wished I had someone to talk to, someone to comfort me. The only person who came anywhere close to that was Kermit. And he wasn’t exactly the sort of person I wanted to hug.
It didn’t take long for us to arrive at Jason’s house. I saw Ty leaning next to the door, looking impatient. He saw us and raised his eyebrows. “What took you so long?” he asked.
Jason pointed at me and I smiled embarrassedly. “I… uh… sorry,” I managed to spit out.
Ty grinned. “No problem. You’re here now, and that’s what counts. Anyway, Jason, are we just gonna chill outside for a few hours or are we actually doing stuff?”
“Oops,” Jason laughed, unlocking the front door.
Jason’s house was incredible. The amount of decoration on the walls was immense. Posters, paintings, photos… it was hard to see the actual colour of the walls. Although the house itself wasn’t that big, its smallness only made it more cosy and snug. How did Jason afford such an extravagant house? Perhaps his relatives had a lot of money. Or maybe he just saved all the money he got off YouTube.
We followed Jason through the narrow hallway and into a small living room. I sat down on a white leather couch. Jason sat next to me, and Ty next to him. It was a bit crowded, but still comfortable. “So,” Jason said, looking at Ty, “What’s the DVD you got?”
Ty held up a DVD case and we peered at the writing. “Team Crafted: The Movie?” Jason gasped. “Ty, where did you get this?”
Ty grinned. “I got it in the mail yesterday morning. It didn’t say who it was from, but I had a quick look at it, and it seems pretty freakin’ hilarious.”
“Let me see,” I said, taking the case. The front was decorated with a 3D picture of all the members of Team Crafted, with the title layered on top. I turned it over, and read the summary out loud. “SkyDoesMinecraft. Deadlox. MinecraftUniverse. And more. These are all people that you will find in this movie, a hilarious two hour collection spanning from Team Crafted’s roots to the flowers it has blossomed into today.”
“Sounds interesting. Let me put it in,” Jason said. I handed him the disc and he slotted it into a sleek DVD player. He grabbed the TV remote and switched on the television. The TV itself was fairly old, but it was of a good size. The display flickered on, and the DVD started playing.
For the next couple of hours we sat back and enjoyed the DVD, constantly laughing and talking. It was pretty startling, the differences between Sky’s early YouTube career and what it was like now. I felt a little sad that the original Sky couldn’t watch it. But as the movie rolled on, I was laughing too much to care. By the time the movie ended, I was in tears. So were Ty and Jason.
“That was so beautiful in so many ways,” Jason spluttered, still laughing. Ty and I nodded in agreement.
“Hold on. I need to use the bathroom,” Ty said, getting up. I grinned at Jason.
“Something’s wrong,” Jason murmured, staring at me. My smile slowly faded. “Something’s very, very wrong.”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
Jason looked me dead in the eye. “Adam. I know something’s wrong.”
“How did you–” My hand flew to my mouth. Jason smiled.
“I knew it. Now, what’s the problem?” Jason laughed. I relaxed a little, and for the first time, I saw Jason as more than a YouTuber. He was a friend.
“Look, Jason, this is going to sound crazy,” I began, smiling awkwardly. “But I swear, it’s all true.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll believe you,” Jason said. I knew he would trust me. After all, he and Adam had been friends for a long, long time. Jason would understand. Suddenly, Ty walked in through the door.
“What’s happening?” he asked, seeing our serious faces.
“Adam has a problem,” Jason said simply. The way he phrased it sounded like it was nothing more than something trivial, like I dropped my phone or something. It was much more than that, though. Ty sat back down next to me, and I could feel their eyes staring at me. I was confident telling Jason what was wrong, but what about Ty? Would he understand? The only way to find out was to tell them.
With a deep breath, I began my tale. I told them how I had gone to bed as Darren, making YouTube videos as a bored teenager. I told them how I had woken up in this body, confused and shocked to see Sky’s face instead of mine in the mirror. I told them everything. When I finished off, the two of them just stared at me. Then Ty burst out laughing.
“Adam, you really got me there!” he laughed, grinning for all he was worth. “Did you really think I would fall for that? I’m not an idiot, you know. You’re such a…”
Ty saw our blank expressions and laughed uneasily. “Um, you don’t mean to say that… that was actually true?”
“Of course it’s true,” Jason said defensively. “I believe Adam. Or Darren. Wait, what should I actually call you?”
The two warring YouTubers looked in my direction, and I looked away. “I don’t care. I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
Jason and Ty exchanged glances and looked at me. “Can I call you Darren?” Jason asked tentatively. I shrugged, but inside, my heart was racing. It had been so long since someone last called me by my real name. Perhaps this would help me keep my grip on reality.
“Do you think you could help me?” I whispered. Jason looked thoughtful.
“Hmm… can you remember anything unusual that happened the night you got swapped?” he asked me. I thought back to lying in bed, staring out of the window, wishing on shooting stars…
What!? No, it was impossible. Shooting stars couldn’t grant wishes. True, I had wished for more subscribers, and I had four million the night after that, but it was just a coincidence. Shooting stars were just fragments of rock burning up in the atmosphere. There was nothing magical about that. So why had we switched bodies?
“There was a shooting star,” I said to Jason. Ty snorted, but we ignored him. “I wished for more subscribers when I saw it. I know it sounds stupid, and it might not even have anything to do with this mess, but that’s what I saw.”
“Hold on a sec,” Jason said, getting up. He left me and Ty sitting next to each other. We looked at each other awkwardly.
“So, uh, Darren,” Ty said, breaking the ice. “What’s it like, being in another man’s body?”
“Being in the body itself is fairly unremarkable,” I shrugged. “Trying to entertain four million people is the difficult part. I have to entertain them, for everyone can see my previous videos are good. It’s only natural that they’d expect all the other videos to be good too, and I have to keep on doing daily videos. Which means that I have to make videos pretending to be Sky.”
“Wow,” Ty said. “Must be difficult for you.”
“Yeah,” I said. Jason walked back through the door, holding a slim laptop under his arm.
“Since when did you have that?” Ty asked, staring.
“Only for a couple of weeks,” Jason said, opening up the laptop as he sat down again. “Now, let’s see if we can find any information on this.”
The laptop was already awake, so Jason quickly typed some words into the Google search bar: shooting star body swap. He pressed enter, and we started scouring the results. The first couple were just junk, but then we found a link that looked promising. Jason clicked on it, and an article came up describing a comet called Animus’ Comet. We silently read the text to ourselves.
Animus’ Comet was first discovered in 1613 by a man named Fredrik Animus when two people mysteriously switched bodies overnight. After much study, it was found that a comet containing an unknown material had been close to Earth at that time. However, by that time, the comet had long gone, and scientists waited for the comet to appear again.
Although the scientists missed a few sightings, scientists managed to work out exactly what was going on in 1913. It was found that the comet left a trail of fine animium powder, a material so scarce and rare that only a couple of samples have ever been discovered. Animium is also extremely dense. The animium, drawn by the gravity of Earth, entered the atmosphere, withstanding temperatures well over 2000°F.
It has been found that animium is attracted to materials found in the human body, specifically the larynx or voice box, so naturally, the animium powder left by the comet was attracted to the bodies of many different humans all over the world. The animium lodged itself in the voice box, where it carried out its special quality.
Specific vibrations in the larynx cause animium to absorb a particular part of the brain that is commonly referred to as the ‘soul’. It has been found that the words ‘I wish’ provide the perfect amount of vibration for the animium to react.
As time went on, the animium powder grew less dense, finally light enough to float in air. The animium returned to the outside world, still bonded with the soul. During this time, the human whose soul the animium had taken would be technically dead. As the animium rose, it grew less and less dense, until finally it was no longer able to carry the soul. The soul must remain in contact with something at all times, so the soul rushed to find a host. However, not all souls found the correct human, leading to a ‘body swap’.
“So that’s how it happened,” I said, feeling slightly more relieved. “Now, how do we get back?”
“Simple,” Ty said. “You get some more animium, and both you and the real Adam intake some. Then say the words ‘I wish’ together, and repeat until both your souls are in the correct bodies.”
“Well, how are we going to get more animium?” I asked anxiously. “It’s really rare, remember?”
Ty shrugged. “Just wait for the next appearance of the comet.”
I smiled. “Thank you so much for your help. Jason, do you know when the comet will next appear?”
“Yes,” he said hoarsely. He looked pale. “I do.”
“And when would that be?” I asked excitedly. Jason pointed a shaking finger at the computer screen, and I stopped smiling. My heart dropped down into the pit of my stomach as I read the last few lines of the article.
Animus’ comet is the only known source of animium as of now. Scientists are planning to try and capture the comet next time it comes near Earth, which is estimated to be in 2113.
2113. No combination of four numbers had ever shocked me that much. 2113. Also known as a hundred years from now. A hundred years before I could even have a chance to obtain any animium. I would be dead in a hundred years’ time.
So in short, I would never be Darren ever again.
