Chapter 4 - My name's not Daz

"Darren! Time to wake up! Don't you have a match at ten?"

Groaning, I turned over in my bed. "Dakota, stop it. It's summer vacation. I'm not allowing myself to be awake until at least twelve."

I heard footsteps and snuggled further into the bedcovers. However, they were promptly ripped off and I looked up to see not Dakota, but an angry woman.

"Darren," she scolded, "I know it's summer vacation, but you could at least make an effort to wake up before ten."

"Dakota, this isn't funny," I called worriedly. The woman looked confused.

"Your friends haven't arrived yet. Besides, since when did you have a friend called Dakota?"

"Hold on a sec."

I walked out of the room, pushing past the now very confused woman. My head hurt. This wasn't my apartment. It was far too big to be anywhere near where I was. I found the bathroom and splashed my face with water. Feeling better, I looked in the mirror.

I wasn't expecting what I saw. A young teenager stared back at me, covered in spots. Who was this guy? I took a step back and realised that this was me now. What had happened to me?

I didn't have much time, though. The doorbell rang and the woman rushed downstairs. She opened the door to reveal another teenager, but a lot less spotty. This guy held a football under his arm and saw me staring at him.

"Hey Darren, ready to play?" he grinned. I just stared. Thankfully this 'Darren' guy had fallen asleep in his clothes, so I was ready to go. Dazed, I walked downstairs and smiled at the football kid.

"Let's go," he said. I nodded blankly. I was too shocked to care at this point, but the questions were still rushing through my head. Why was I here? Why wasn't I with Dakota? I chose to ignore the questions and focus on getting things done for now.

When I walked outside, the guy took a skateboard that was leaning on the wall. I chose to walk, but he just stared at me. I realised that, since I was now a teenage boy, I'd have to use a skateboard.

I'd never learned how to skateboard. Anyway, where did Darren even keep his skateboard? I went back inside, and shouted, "Where's my skateboard?"

"It's in the shed," came the reply. I ran through the house, and into the small back garden. When I found the shed, I grabbed the battered skateboard inside, and went back to the front.

"Don't forget your key!" the woman called again. My hand went to my pocket and I felt the familiar shape of a key within.

"Got it," I said wearily. The teenager in front of me grinned and got on his skateboard. I got on Darren's skateboard somewhat shakily. However, I found that it wasn't too hard to ride it. Maybe riding a skateboard was more about physical attributes than skill.

I followed the guy until we reached a park. There, a few other people were kicking a ball about. I had never understood football. I had only ever played a couple of games during my lifetime.

"Darren! Landon! There you are!" shouted one of the boys, a tall, skinny guy. So Landon was this kid's name. "Ready to play?"

"Sure. What are we doing about teams?" asked Landon.

"I'll take Zach and Kieran," the other guy said.

"Guess I'm stuck with Darren and Rick," Landon grinned. "Don't let me down," he added, whispering to me.

I gulped. Something told me that football wouldn't be as easy as skateboarding. Landon put me as a defender. What did a defender even do? I stood near the goal, but the other member of our team, Rick, simply glared at me.

The game started. I decided that the best tactic to do was to hang around as far away from the ball as possible. Unsurprisingly, we lost, 3-1. I said goodbye to the rest of the players, and was about to skateboard away when Landon stopped me.

"You played well. Want to record when we get back?" he asked.

Record!? Did Darren have a YouTube account? I hoped it wasn't one of those vlogging channels. I hadn't even thought about my own YouTube channel. What would my fans think of my... change? I made a mental note to alert my fans about my situation via a YouTube video.

"So, are we gonna record the next episode when we get back?" Landon asked again.

So it was some sort of series, maybe a let's play. I wondered which game it was. "Maybe later," I said hurriedly, before skateboarding away. I couldn't afford to be recording someone else's videos. I really didn't want to stay like this for much longer.

However, I quickly found that I didn't know the way back to Darren's house. Heck, I hardly even knew what it looked like. It didn't take long for me to get lost. In hindsight, running away from the one person I actually knew was probably not the best idea.

Fortunately, though, Landon managed to find me. He looked tired out when he finally reached me. "Dude, when did you get so fast?" he puffed. "I followed you all the way out here! What are you even doing here?"

"Thanks," I said, "I mean, sorry."

"Don't worry, Daz," he smiled, punching me on the shoulder. "Just remember to wait next time, 'kay?"

"Yeah," I said, picking up speed again, with Landon by my side this time. Hopefully Darren's house was closer than Landon's, so he would drop me off at the appropriate place.

Landon talked to me during the journey, but I wasn't listening. My mind was a blur. Daz. That wasn't my nickname. I didn't even have any nicknames, apart from Sky. But now I was Darren. Why wasn't I Adam? How wasn't I Adam? I didn't understand how or why this had happened, and more importantly, how to get back to being Adam.

And what had happened to the real Darren? Had he disappeared, and I had taken his place? Then what was I - well, my body - doing now? Maybe our bodies had been switched, and Darren was now the one with all the fans. Or maybe I had always been Darren, and being a famous YouTuber was just my wishful imagination...

No. I knew that I was Sky. Although I looked like Darren, sounded like Darren and acted like Darren, inside, I was still Adam. I would post a video on my account as soon as I got back. My subscribers would believe me. They'd accept me in my new state, and I'd be able to get in contact with everyone and keep on making videos like normal.

"So, is nine thirty okay for you?" asked Landon. I realised he had stopped and came to a halt. I had no idea what he was talking about. I couldn't put him off forever.

"Yeah," I said.

"Okay. See ya," he said, and he skateboarded away. I stood there for a moment, wondering what to do next.

I looked at where we had stopped and saw two semi-detached houses. They weren't too shabby. I presumed that one of them was Darren's house, but which one? I remembered the key in my pocket, and tried one of the houses.

Thankfully I chose the right one, and I unlocked the door and stepped inside. "Hello!" came a voice from the kitchen. Something smelt delicious.

"Hi," I said, closing the door behind me. "What's for lunch?"

"Curry."

I smiled. I hadn't eaten curry in a while. That was the only problem with having to care for yourself. When Dawn was still with me, she had been a great cook. However, Dakota didn't quite live up to her, and I wasn't exactly a good chef either.

Suddenly I remembered that I had a video to make. I rushed upstairs and searched for Darren's room. It didn't take long to find a room with 'Darren's Den' scribbled on the door. I turned the door handle and stepped inside.

The first thing I noticed was that the walls were absolutely caked with pictures, from tiny doodles to huge drawings. There were guns, cars, things from videogames. I noticed a Mudkip, and a huge Bowser. But largest of all, covering an entire wall, was a Minecraft mural.

As I looked closer, I saw individual details that made me laugh. An enderman, holding a very confused-looking chicken. A wither and an enderdragon, sitting down and having a chat over some tea. The more I looked, the more I was amazed at the talent and effort of this guy.

Then I noticed something that made my eyes widen. I had noticed a squid with a sword stabbed into it, but not who was holding the sword. It was me. SkyDoesMinecraft.

I felt honoured that Darren had included me in this truly epic drawing. I spotted a few of my friends. Jason, Dakota, Ty... I even saw Dawn, which made me smile sadly. I still missed her. I stroked her face with my hand, imagining that the real Dawn was with me right now. She would comfort me, help me out. But it was just a drawing. I stopped thinking about her and remembered what I had come here for.

I found a chunky black laptop, sitting on the desk, but no desktop. I had forgotten that Darren was only a teenager. He wouldn't have enough money to buy two computers.

Oh well. A computer was a computer. The laptop was already open, so I pressed the power button. I was surprised to see that it powered on straight away. I supposed that Darren was one of those kids who left their computer asleep all the time.

Then I saw what was on the screen. The YouTube website told me, 'Upload complete!' None of the other details had been filled in, apart from the title. What I saw made me groan.

Minecraft Survival w\/ PixelPlays! Episode 47, it read. Yet another boring Minecraft playthrough. I minimised Google Chrome and saw some Sticky Notes on the desktop. They were mostly random messages, but one intrigued me.

Video descriptions, it said. It was then followed by a whole stream of social media links. I decided to click on the twitter one, just to see how many followers this guy had. Google Chrome opened up again, loading up twitter.

The account was called @FlyFreeGaming, and the name was simply Fly Free. The description was fairly minimal. Hi! Im Fly and I make videos on youtube. He had five followers and ten tweets.

played some #survivalgames with @Pixel_Plays 2day, check it out, read one. It was followed by a YouTube link. I clicked on the tweet and watched the video.

It started with a short intro, which actually seemed pretty well made. This YouTube channel deserved more views. Then the commentary kicked in.

"Hey guys this is Pixel with some survival games!" Pixel said. There was a lot of background noise added in to the mix, and the terrible microphone quality didn't help. Despite the bad quality, though, I still managed to figure out who Pixel was. Landon. "And today we're here with Fly."

"Hello," Fly said, who I could only guess was Darren. His quality didn't fare any better. However, I stopped critiquing the microphone quality and decided to sit back and watch the video.

Surprisingly, it wasn't that bad. There were several moments that made me chuckle. Although their voices were fairly monotonous, and hardly audible over the background noise, it was still entertaining to watch. I had hardly noticed twenty minutes go by when the video ended.

I went to Pixel's channel and watched another video. However, this one wasn't half as funny. Then I realised why. Fly wasn't in this one.

I went to the top of the page and saw that I was logged in as FlyFreeGaming. On the channel page was a long list of videos. I decided to choose the series that I had hated so much before: episode one of the Minecraft survival playthrough.

Fly's intro wasn't as good as Pixel's. But when it came to the actual content, I was blown away by the sheer potential this guy had. The mic quality didn't matter when it came to these videos. I was genuinely disappointed when I had to go downstairs to have lunch. But as soon as I had shovelled the curry down my throat, I was back to watching Fly's videos.

~o~O~o~

In the middle of episode thirty-two, Skype started ringing. Disgruntled, I picked it up. It was Landon.

"Hey, ready to record?" he asked. "It's nine thirty."

What!? I checked the time, and double-checked. After a third check, the clock still showed nine thirty. Had I really been watching videos for that long?

"Yeah..." I said, finding all the necessary programs on the start menu. Minecraft loaded up, and I quietly swore to myself. I hadn't been watching another guy's videos. I had been watching my own. I hadn't even thought about how I wasn't Adam any more. I had completely forgotten about my current situation again, and completely forgotten to tell my fans.

The account was already logged in. I paused before pressing Play. If I logged in and met Landon with my normal account, he would probably freak out.

But would he freak out anyway if I recorded? I wasn't the same sort of person as Darren. My way of entertaining people was completely different to Darren's. His humour was consistent, whereas mine was spontaneous and depended on what was happening around me. I told myself to stop thinking about everything so much.

I went to the multiplayer list once Minecraft had loaded up, and saw them neatly labelled with things like 'Survival Games', 'Spleef' and even 'SkyDoesMinecraft'. The server I was looking for was clearly named 'Survival with Pixel'.

"Let's record!" Landon said. I smiled. Even if my humour was different to Darren's, it was still humour.

"Okay. Three, two, one..." I counted down, and took a deep breath. "Hey guys, Sk- Fly here and I'm here with another episode of Minecraft survival with Pixel!"

For a moment I thought that Landon was going to tell me to restart, but he just went with the flow. "Hi," he said simply. I grinned. I had missed doing good old vanilla survival. I was ready.
