Chapter 3 - Darren... or Sky?
I opened my eyes and yawned. That had been a good night's rest. I remembered the game in the park, and checked the time. 10:42. I woke up instantly, swearing.
"Mum! Why didn't you wake me up!" I shouted. My voice sounded weird. I hoped I hadn't caught that illness going around school. I didn't want to be sick during the summer. The game was supposed to be at ten o'clock. My friends would probably have long gone by now, but there was still hope.
"Adam, you're not dead!" came a strange voice. I froze. My name wasn't Adam, it was Darren. Who was this strange person? They sounded like Kermit the Frog. Maybe they weren't talking to me, but another intruder! What if there were more people than just the one guy? What were they doing in my house?
"Who are you?" I shouted.
"Adam, did you hit your head or something? I'm Dakota, remember? Your one and only roommate!" the guy replied. "Also known as KermitPlaysMinecraft?"
My mouth dropped open. I couldn't believe it. This famous YouTuber who lived with Sky himself was having a casual conversation with me, as if we were best buds. And he was in my room. "What are you doing here?" I managed to say shakily.
"Um, Adam, are you okay?" said Kermit, giving me a strange look. "You'd better go and see the nurse."
"I'm fine," I said, recovering from the initial shock slightly. "Where's the bathroom?"
"Just along the corridor..." Kermit said, and before he could say anything else, I rushed to the bathroom. When I got there, I saw my face in the mirror and almost did a double take.
"Sky!?" I said, looking at the familiar figure in the mirror. I touched my chin, and Sky did likewise. Somehow overnight I had turned into SkyDoesMinecraft. My roommate was Kermit, my name was now Adam... it didn't make any sense.
But then where was the real Sky? Had I done something crazy last night that I had completely forgotten about? What if I had taken part in some sort of ritual that had swapped our destinies? That would mean that Sky was now in my body! I shook the thoughts out of my head.
I needed to think straight. How did this happen? Why did this happen? I remembered the wish I had made last night, and wondered if that had anything to do with my current situation. When I wished for more subscribers, I was only hoping for one or two more subscribers, not four million. It couldn't be true. Wishes weren't real. However, for now, I had to make do with living in Sky's body. I walked out of the bathroom and into my room again.
"Feeling better?" Kermit asked. I nodded. "Great. Do you want to record some videos? I found a great new minigame last night."
Record? I had completely forgotten about Sky's internet fame. His viewers would know something was up if I didn't upload any videos. I couldn't impersonate Sky. I wasn't half as funny as him. If I tried to make a video, everyone would unsubscribe when they found out how unfunny Sky had become. But now that I actually was Sky, maybe I would be funny.
"Um... sure," I said, sitting down at Sky's desk. The first thing I noticed was that the computer was massive. It took up nearly the entire desk, with wires going everywhere. What did all these wires even do? The tower was under the desk. I switched the power button and it quietly hummed into life, the LED fans lighting up like some sort of future technology from the movie Tron.
I plugged in the earphones that were on the desk, and put them in my ears. The huge monitor lit up with the Windows 7 logo as the powerful beast before me awoke from its slumber. It only took a few seconds for the login screen to appear.
I pressed the familiar Windows key combination and it asked for a password. I hesitated for a moment. I had no idea what Sky's password was. On a whim, I tried my own password, and somehow it was accepted. I was in.
A Skype call came up from a guy called Ryan. Curious, I accepted it and a voice rang through the earphones.
"Yo Adam, feeling less tired now?" Ryan asked.
"Yeah," I replied.
"Are you up for another round of Survival Games?"
Survival Games!? I had never played Survival Games before. I wasn't a big fan of it, and had only watched a couple of videos of it. "Maybe later," I said, "I'm... er... playing a minigame with Kermit right now."
"Okay, sure," said Ryan, and hung up the Skype call.
"You ready?" asked Kermit. Heart pounding, I nodded. I was going to impersonate Sky and release a video of me making a fool of myself. Although I looked like Sky, inside, I was still a fourteen-year-old boy with hardly any experience of YouTube. And now I was releasing a video to over four million people. But they didn't like me. They liked Sky. They didn't want a teenager to take his place. What would they think?
I picked up the Skype call from Kermit. "Let me show you the minigame," he said.
"Okay," I replied, and opened up Minecraft. When it came to logging in, the details were all fortunately filled out. It took a few seconds for the main menu to appear.
"I've already set up a LAN world," Kermit told me, and I clicked on multiplayer. Kermit's world appeared, and I joined to see a small room, littered with signs.
"Read the signs quickly, and we'll get started," he said. It only took me a minute to read everything and work out what the minigame was about.
"Want to play an experimental round?" asked Kermit.
"Sure," I said, and pressed the button marked 'start'. We teleported to a room filled with tightly packed sheep. We had to find the single chicken, and put the raw chicken it dropped into a hopper, which would then give us the win. We had a wooden sword each to help us remove the sheep.
After a couple of rounds, we had both won and lost one. "Ready to record?" Kermit asked.
"Yup," I replied. Thankfully Sky recorded with Fraps, so it was easy for me to navigate the familiar interface. I pressed record.
"Three, two, one..." I said, and took a deep breath. "Hey guys, and welcome to another Minecraft video."
"What was that? You sound like a teenage boy," laughed Kermit. My heart skipped a beat when I heard that. However, it was just his way of making fun of me. He hadn't found out my secret. I remembered Sky's intro, which I knew off by heart. The viewers would definitely think something was wrong if they heard a different intro.
"Yeah," I said, forcing a laugh. "Let's try again."
"Three, two, one," I repeated, trying the intro again. "Hey guys, Sky here, and I'm with Kermit for a cool new minigame!"
"Hi," said Kermit.
"It's called Chicken Hunt, and the rules are as follows," I said, and read out the rules. After I was done, I asked Kermit, "Shall we start?"
"Yeah!" said Kermit, jumping up and pressing the button. We started the hunt.
A few minutes later, Kermit cried, "Found it!" and moments later the chat read 'KermitPlaysMC won the game'.
"Another?" I asked.
"Definitely!" said Kermit, and I pressed the button before he could reach it. We started searching again.
This time, I was the victor. When I saw the chat say, 'SkythekidRS won the game', it reminded me of my current situation again, sending a jolt through my body. I wasn't FlyFreeGaming any more. I was taking the place of Sky and recording a video in his body, using his account. "Wanna play one more?" Kermit asked, pulling me back to the real world. I couldn't say no. We played one last time.
In the end, I managed to defeat Kermit. "Anyway, that was Chicken Hunt!" I said, forcing myself to sound cheerful. I remembered to use Sky's outro. "Check out the minigame in the description below. It's a really fun little minigame and a really cool idea. Kermit's channel will also be in the description. But anyway, I'm Sky, and I'll see you later recruits."
After I closed Fraps, Kermit laughed. "Wow," he said, "That was really fun. Let's play some more!"
"No thanks," I said, "Ryan wants to play some Survival Games with me. We can play later."
"'Kay," Kermit said, and turned off the Skype call. Just then, I felt a vibration in my pocket, and pulled out a Samsung smartphone. I had received a text. Somehow I knew the code to unlock the phone, and I viewed the text.
r u free 2 come over 2moz? It was from a guy called Jason. I remembered Sky's friend MinecraftUniverse, and wondered if this was the same person. I scrolled upwards, looking at the rest of the conversation. I read the earliest texts.
is this skydoesminecraft? Jason had said.
yea, Sky had replied. r u minecraftuniverse?
yup, Jason had answered. I was right. MinecraftUniverse was the one who had sent the text. The phone vibrated again, and I viewed another text from Jason.
r u there? lol, read the text. I typed a quick reply.
soz i was busy, I said. It only took a moment for another text to arrive.
kk lol, it said. so can u come over?
What should I say? I didn't even know where Jason lived, and I couldn't exactly ask him. I knew that Jason was one of Sky's oldest friends, and suddenly forgetting where he lived wasn't exactly what old friends did. Without thinking, I typed a reply.
yeah im free, I said. I realised what I had done and started panicking. What if Jason knew something was up once he saw me in real life? What would he do? But he'd only realise that if I came to his house, which wouldn't happen, because I didn't have the slightest clue as to where Jason lived. And that would make him even more suspicious. Another text appeared.
cool shall i pick u up at 12? Jason asked. I breathed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, I could avoid the dilemma of finding out Jason's location. For now.
ok, I replied.
kk cya, Jason said.
cya, I typed, and put down the phone with a sigh. Hopefully Jason wouldn't realise that anything was wrong tomorrow. I wouldn't get far posing as Sky if I kept on getting this stressed about things. Before I could have a break, though, the computer in front of me displayed a Skype call from Ryan. I put on the headphones again and picked up the call.
"Want to play Survival Games now?" Ryan asked. I smiled, genuinely this time. I had already survived a text conversation with Jason and a whole video with Kermit. I felt much less daunted by the prospect of pretending to be Sky, even though I wasn't really pretending. I actually was Sky now, and I accepted that.
"Sure," I said. I kept on remembering that I didn't have any skill at Survival Games, but it wouldn't matter.
"Jerome and Husky are busy right now, though," Ryan said, "So it'll just be me and you. Still up for it?"
"Of course," I smiled.
"Log on to my server, and I'll meet you at spawn." Those words made me freeze. Which one was his server? Fraps was still open, and so was Minecraft. I browsed through the multiplayer section, searching for anything that had 'Ryan' in the title. No luck.
"Um... which server?" I said, frantically hoping that Ryan had more than one server. Hopefully he wouldn't think anything was wrong. My confidence had vanished. Now I felt like a helpless rabbit caught in the headlights. Ryan would know something was wrong for sure. I heard him laugh and braced myself for the worst.
"GLG Craft, of course!" he said. I waited for more, but that was it. Maybe I was just being too paranoid. Why would anyone be suspicious of me, anyway? They wouldn't know that I wasn't the real Sky. I decided to stop being so fearful and relax a bit.
I found GLG Craft in the server list and logged in. I was instantly greeted by a ton of people at spawn. How was I supposed to know which one was Ryan? I minimized the Minecraft window and did a quick Google search of 'GLG Craft'. It turned out that it was owned by xRpMx13, the 'incredibly good looking gamer'. Another search showed that xRpMx13 had a batman skin. After that, I easily found Ryan.
"All right, s... g... join," Ryan said as he typed. I copied him, typing \/sg join. We quickly joined an arena.
"3... 2... 1... all right, what is up all my good looking gamers! xRpMx13 the incredibly good looking gamer coming at you with another round of Survival Games with Sky!" Ryan spurted.
"Um... hi!" I said, as my snail-paced brain finally realised that Ryan was doing the intro for the round. I gulped as my nerves got the better of me again. Sky's subscribers wouldn't mind if I failed... would they? I had to keep the commentary entertaining, no matter what I did. And if all else failed, I didn't have to upload it. Ryan would probably upload it, though...
"Ready?" Ryan asked, snapping me back to reality.
No, I wasn't ready at all. I never was, and I never would me. I dissolved into a mess of nerves again. I was terrified. I couldn't play Survival Games. I couldn't commentate. Then I remembered the video with Kermit. That hadn't failed, had it? I could do it again. I wouldn't fail this. Even if I didn't get very far before I died, I would still keep on commentating.
"The countdown's started!" Ryan said. I wasn't prepared, but the show had to go on. I saw the countdown in the chat and swallowed my fear as Ryan started explaining his plans to me. I focused on the chests in the middle. I could win this. As soon as the countdown reached zero, I took a deep breath, and ran.
