Chapter 15 - Dawning in the Sky

I can still feel it. That part inside of me that begs for me to hang on to this life a little longer. And I could do it. I could simply sightsee around Bulgaria for a while, and when the time comes to switch, I’ll just run away and catch the next plane back to America. After all, I have the money now.

But I’ve risen above that. I tried to keep it a secret at first, and I could’ve kept it that way. I didn’t have to tell anyone. Yet if I had done that, I know that the heavy secret would have always been lapping at my feet, constantly reminding me that I could never run away from it. And eventually, it would have dragged me under.

Of course, I can’t get rid of the regret fully. It’ll always be there for the rest of my life, even after we switch back. Who could forget something like this? I have everything right there at my fingertips: friends, fame, money. I’ve got the dream life, and I’m just tossing it away.

No. I’m not. It’s not my life, and it’s not being simply tossed away. If I found a wallet, it wouldn’t be right to use the money. It wouldn’t be mine.

This life is the same. It belongs to Adam. I have to return it.

“You okay?” a voice asks softly, and I jump. Ty is looking at me, smiling. “You kinda spaced  out there for a second.”

“I-I’m fine,” I say quickly.

Ty laughs. “You’re blushing,” he tells me, which only makes my cheeks get hotter.

“Where’s Adam?” I ask, changing the subject. Ty points to the window. Adam’s looking out of the window, watching the clouds go by. When I walk up to him, it’s slightly disorientating to be taller than him.

“I’ve been thinking,” Adam says. He turns away from the window, and looks at me. I gasp. “What?”

“It’s just… I never realised…” I say, stumbling over my own words. Adam stares at me with his beautiful eyes – my eyes.

“Tell me.”

“I didn’t know I looked so…”

“Good?”

“Well… yeah. I’ve always hated myself, but now…”

Adam pats my arm, and I trail off. After an awkward pause, I remember something. “Didn’t you have something to say?” I ask him.

Adam smiles. “Yeah. I watched some of your videos.”

I can feel my cheeks reddening again. “Why? I’m just some kid derping around on a video game.”

“Well, I loved them.”

I almost fall over. “But… you’re SkyDoesMinecraft! Why would you, of all people, like my videos… when you make amazing videos yourself?”

Adam laughs. “You’ve got talent, Darren.” His smile widens. “So when this whole mess is sorted out… would you like to record with me?”

This time I actually do fall over. I feel light-headed, dizzy with happiness. “Heck yeah,” I breathe, dazed.

“Man, this still weirds me out, talking to myself,” Adam says. “You already knew my face, but imagine how confused I was when I found out I was someone I didn’t even recognise.”

“I guess so,” I muse. “But imagine how confused I was when I found out I was someone who I actually did recognise, yet never thought I’d ever meet, let alone become.”

Adam shrugs. “Touché.”

“You know… it’s been fun being Sky,” I admit. “I’ve met so many awesome people, even though I never even dreamed I could have them as friends. But in a way, I’m kinda looking forward to being myself again.”

“I know what you mean,” Adam smiles. “I almost forgot how I used to be, doing YouTube for fun and just having fun. Being fourteen again has made me remember that life’s good, no matter which way you look at it.”

And in that moment, I feel a wall between us crumble. I’ve always seen Adam as a distant figure, like some sort of celebrity, someone with money and fame and not a care in the world. But even famous people have troubles, things to worry about. A couple weeks wasn’t long enough for any problems to crop up. Adam’s words had shown me otherwise.

“How long until the plane lands?” Ty whinges, suddenly appearing next to us. I roll my eyes.

“We’re going from America to Bulgaria. Think about where that is on the map. Then think about how long we’ve been on the plane,” I say.

“Yeah, but… it just takes so long…” Ty complains. I punch him gently on the shoulder.

“It’ll be over before you know it,” I assure him. “Why not get some sleep?”

“Come to think of it, I’m getting kinda tired,” Ty says. He stifles a yawn and walks away. “Wake me up when the plane lands.”

“I ain’t tired one bit,” Adam says defiantly, and I laugh.

“What’re you thinking about?” I ask him. His face grows sad, and he turns back to the window.

“Dawn.”

I smile softly. “I’m sure you’ll find another girl someday.”

Adam snorts, and mutters something incomprehensible under his breath. “What was that?” I ask hesitantly.

Adam sighs. “It’s just… I never really told anyone what really happened between me and Dawn.”

I remain silent, but inside, I’m dying to hear the whole story. Adam looks back to me, and I’m startled to see tears in his eyes.

“You know, I’ve always found it funny. My nickname’s Sky. Sometimes people ask me why I chose that name. I tell them it was just a random name, but it’s more than that. I thought of myself like the night sky. Without all the stars – my fans, my friends – I was just an empty, dark void, and nothing more than that. But with my stars, everyone would marvel at me. It sounds soppy, I know, but it’s true. I was originally going to call my fans the stars, but I let Jason have that name.

“Then came my Dawn. She was the light of my life. The darkness faded as she rose higher. But then I realised that as she rose up, my friends faded away, one by one, until they nearly disappeared altogether. I had to choose – the bright day, or starry night.

“I talked to Dawn. I told her how I felt, and I was surprised that she understood. It wasn’t her fault I had grown distant from my friends, but it was inevitable. She couldn’t stop it, and neither could I. So we came to an agreement, and broke up.

“And that’s pretty much the full story. What I said on twitter was true. Every so often I call her on my phone, or text her asking how she’s doing. We’re good friends, but nothing more than that. Dawn has another boyfriend now. She’s happy.”

I don’t really know what to say. Should I be happy for him, or cry? I just stand there awkwardly, shuffling my feet. “Well… you’ll always have your friends. Your fans.” I smile.

“I guess you’re right,” Adam says, and he smiles as well. Then he rushes up to me, and hugs me tightly. “Thanks, Darren.”

I ruffle his hair absent-mindedly. “For what?”

“For showing me that even if I can’t see them, the stars will always keep on shining.”

Sorry for making you wait so long for this chapter, but I love you all so here's the next chappie! It's kind of short... and kind of boring... but after such a long break, it's hard to get back in the story. I can do it, though, I know it!

Seeeeeeyaaaaaaaaaaaaa
