Chapter 12 - It's time to give up.

As I put the phone down, it instantly started ringing again. “What is it?” I sighed exasperatedly.

“So you finally called him up, then?” Landon said.

“Wha… how’d you know?”

“I’ve been trying to call you for ages. When it said you were engaged, I made an educated guess as to what you were doing.”

“How do you know this stuff?”

“I’m in the top set at school for a reason.”

“Wow… I’m not a smart guy myself.”

“We’re getting off track. Did you get his address?”

“Sure.” I read out the details that I had quickly typed into the Minecraft chat. It was a weird place to note it down, I know, but it did the job.

“All right. We’ll take the train there tomorrow,” Landon said.

“What!?”

“It’s not that far. Just get up early, and we’ll have plenty of time to sort everything out.”

“How early is early?”

“Hmm… how does seven thirty sound?”

“…Okay.”

“Great, see you tomorrow!”

With that, Landon hung up the phone. I sat there in silence. Now what? I kept on playing Minecraft, but my heart simply wasn’t in it anymore. Although I had recovered all the items I had lost from the creeper explosion, and I already had a full stack of diamonds, I wasn’t enjoying it. Closing the window, I decided to go onto YouTube and watch some videos.

When it opened, I wondered how my most recent video was doing. Well, Darren’s. It was getting harder and harder to remember who I really was. As I watched, I realised how stupid I sounded. I simply wasn’t entertaining. I scrolled down to read the comments, dejected, and my emotions instantly changed.

‘wheres the next episode?’

‘xD MORE!!!!!!’

‘pls make more’

Even though there were only three of them, all those comments really cheered me up. I may not be SkyDoesMinecraft, but I still had a video to record. Seeing that Landon was online, I skyped him, and he picked up the call almost instantly. “Yeah?”

I smiled. “Let’s record.”

~o~O~o~

I was in high spirits once more as I uploaded the video. Although it was taking forever to upload, I didn’t mind. I decided to watch Sky’s newest video while I waited. I smiled sadly when I saw that it already had half a million views. Having supportive subscribers was great, but it was nothing compared to having four million. I recognised the video as a round of Survival Games that I had recorded the day before we switched. For some reason, it felt like I was more entertaining when I was in my own body. I was getting slightly weirded out now, so I closed the video and went on another website. Wattpad.

Wattpad had always been one of my favourite websites. There were some really talented writers out there. I had an account myself, but I didn’t tell anyone who I really was. I just enjoyed reading fanfiction and giving support to the writers. Although it was slightly strange reading fanfiction about myself, it always warmed my heart.

I checked to see if my favourite fanfiction, Special, had been updated. Sadly it hadn’t, but when I went to pester EnderArrow to update, I saw that I was already logged in. My profile didn’t seem that exciting. The single story I had posted wasn’t very exciting, but I had about twenty followers. Then I noticed the status.

‘damn I’m depressed… someobdy cheer me up pleas…’

Suddenly I remembered something. I ran upstairs quickly, leaving my laptop in the living room. I took another look at the drawings on the walls, and what I saw almost made me want to tear up.

I hadn’t noticed what some of the drawings actually consisted of. Sure, most of them were cheerful video game characters, but some took on a darker tone. Darren’s art simply blew me away. It was amazing how he could create such a masterpiece using just black ink on white wallpaper.

I sighed. My mum had woken up a long time ago, and I could smell lunch cooking. Pushing my thoughts aside, I decided to just enjoy to rest of the day.

~o~O~o~

I slumped on the bed, exhausted. Today had been a long day. After lunch, Landon had called me up and asked me if I wanted to go to a movie with some other friends. Of course, I had said yes, and we had had a fun day out. However, I was completely tired out. We had gone to McDonald’s after that to have some ice cream, after eventually returning just in time for dinner. I was just about ready to go to bed. After all, I was getting up early tomorrow.

I looked out of the window, just as I had done on that fateful night. The clouds were covering the sky, so I was unable to see any stars, but it was somewhat soothing. I closed my eyes, and smiled.

~o~O~o~

“Ugh… who’s calling?”

“Da- Adam, the train leaves in ten minutes! We need to go!”

“Ugh… fine…”

I changed into a clean set of clothes and walked downstairs lazily, still with Landon shouting at me on the phone. When I opened the door, Landon was standing there. “Why would you call me if you’re right there?” I said, after an awkward pause.

“Don’t question it. Let’s go!”

A few minutes later, we were standing outside Sky’s house. “I’ll be waiting just across the street,” Landon hissed, as I knocked on the door. I was on my own from now on.

The door swung open, and I came to face-to-face with… my face. It was strange, seeing something that I saw every day, yet not being me. However, the Sky in front of me looked somewhat different from his usual self. He seemed very bedraggled, and stared at me, annoyed. “Hello?” he said groggily.

“Um… hi! It’s me, Adam!” I said, forcing a smile.

“Stupid fanboys,” Darren muttered, and my heart skipped a beat.

“I’m not a fanboy! Darren, don’t you remember the body swap?” I cried.

Darren kept on staring, and I gulped. What was wrong with him? Then, for a moment, I thought that there was a glimmer of recognition in his eyes. Finally he said, “Go away.”

I gasped. “But–”

“Goodbye.”

Darren slammed the door shut in my face. I couldn’t believe it. I simply stood there, stunned, waiting for Darren to come back, laughing and saying it was a joke. I would have stayed there for the rest of the day if Landon hadn’t walked up behind me. “Adam, let’s go,” he said softly. “There’s no point in waiting. It’s time to give up.”

Without another word, we walked away.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I got writer's block... but I'm back now! Thanks for reading!
