Chapter 10 - How did you know?

Brring. Brring. There was a horrible ringing noise in my ears. My eyes slowly opened and I realised that I had fallen asleep on the laptop keyboard. I stretched and sat up, yawning. I had played too much Minecraft last night.

Brring. Brring. Ugh. The ringing wouldn’t stop. Suddenly I realised that the ringing wasn’t coming from inside my head. It was my phone. I slapped my hand around on the desk, looking for the phone, when I remembered that I had left on my bed.

Brring Brr- “Hello?” I said into the phone.

“Daz, it’s me, Landon. I’m coming over in a few minutes,” the caller said.

A few minutes!? I couldn’t think up a good excuse in just ‘a few minutes’! “Okay,” I said worriedly. Landon was going to stick to his word and find out my problem. He might be able to help me, but… somehow, I was still concerned.

In a few minutes’ time, I was sitting on the couch downstairs, waiting for Landon to appear. Soon enough, the doorbell rang, and I answered it to see a very anxious-looking Landon. “Hi,” I tried to grin.

“Cut the small talk,” Landon said seriously, walking into the sitting room and falling onto a couch. “I need to know why you’re acting like this.”

Sitting down as well, I stared into his eyes fearfully. He didn’t give away any of his emotions. Telling him was the easy part. It was his reaction that scared me. How exactly could I phrase this? I decided to skip the boring part and just tell him who I was.

“I…” I said hesitantly, “I… I’m not Darren. I’m SkyDoesMinecraft.”

Landon gave me a look that said, ‘My best friend’s gone cuckoo’. I sighed. I’d have to tell him the full story after all.

Skipping the parts about being addicted to Fly’s videos, I told him all about yesterday. Waking up as Darren, failing at football, recording a video… it took longer than expected to tell my tale, and by the time I was done, Landon had a dazed look on his face. It was understandable. My story seemed insane, and the fact that it was all true didn’t help. Landon looked at me.

“So you’re saying that every word you just spoke was the truth?” Landon asked quietly. I nodded. “Prove it.”

What? For a moment I couldn’t think of anything. Then I remembered something. “The real Darren is now SkyDoesMinecraft, right?” I said to Landon.

“According to your words, yes,” he said.

“Well, SkyDoesMinecraft, aka Darren, sent me a PM on YouTube, confirming that he is indeed Darren!” I said confidently, running upstairs to fetch my laptop.

As soon as I got downstairs, I sat down on a couch again and flung the laptop lid open. The words ‘Upload Complete!’ appeared on the screen. I had forgotten about uploading the recording. I prayed that it hadn’t done too badly. However, now was not the time for that. I had to convince Landon that my story was true.

“Here you go,” I said, passing the laptop to Landon after finding the message. He read the text and his eyes grew wide.

“I’m sitting in the same room as a famous YouTuber,” Landon whispered.

“So you believe me?” I smiled. Landon nodded. “Thank you so much!”

There was an awkward silence. “Do you think that by any chance… you could help me?” I asked hopefully.

“I’d love to, but how?” Landon asked. It was a good point. I had no idea how to get back to normal. I shrugged. “Have to talked to Darren yet?”

“We sent a couple of emails, but nothing more than that,” I said. “Maybe he’s replied.”

There was nothing new in my email inbox. Darren probably hadn’t seen my message yet. Or did he just not care? Maybe he had finally realised how good it was to be me. “Nothing,” I said glumly.

“Well… maybe if you meet up, you’ll somehow go back to normal,” Landon suggested.

“Yeah, like that’ll work,” I snorted. “Let’s be honest, Landon. I don’t know how to get back to normal. The chances of being… well, me again, are extremely slim. I can’t exactly just wish that I was Sky again, and some magical fairy will wave her wand and everything will return to the way it was. That’s not the way the world works. I’ll be stuck like this forever!”

As I ranted, my voice grew louder and louder, eventually ending up with me shouting in Landon’s face. He flinched, and I drew back. “I’ll be stuck like this… forever,” I repeated, my voice little more than a whisper.

“There has to be a way…” Landon muttered. His eyes lit up suddenly and he looked at me. “How did your bodies swap in the first place?”

How did they swap? I didn’t have the faintest idea. All I had done the night before I swapped was play Survival Games, have an early night, wonder what to do for my five million subscriber special… hang on a second. I remembered it clearly now. I didn’t want to do the special video, so I had wished for fewer subscribers. But that wasn’t possible. Wishes didn’t just get granted. Magic didn’t exist. So how had this happened?

“I don’t understand,” I whimpered miserably. “I wished for less subscribers, and my wish came true. It doesn’t make sense.”

“It may not make sense, but if that’s what happened, we’ll just have to deal with it,” Landon said. “We need to get in contact with Darren. Do you know your phone number?”

“Strange. I can’t seem to remember,” I said worriedly. “This body is playing tricks on my brain. It’s getting harder and harder for me to remember who I am.”

“Okay. Send another email asking for him to phone you,” Landon ordered. I went to Gmail and started composing another message. After telling Sky my phone number, I asked for him to call me, and sent the message.

“It’s on its way,” I said confidently. “Hopefully we can get in contact soon.”

“Great,” Landon said. “Tell me when you manage to get in contact.”

“Are you leaving already?” I asked, getting to my feet.

“Yeah… why?” he said.

“How did you know something was wrong?” I blurted out. Landon smiled.

“I have my ways,” he said simply. “See you around, Adam.”

“See ya,” I said, confused. I waved goodbye to Landon, and sat down on the couch again. This was my life now, desperately trying to get in contact with famous YouTubers and hoping that I would one day revert to one of the most famous. To take my mind off of things, I decided to play some more Minecraft, but just vanilla survival this time.

It was all going well, until my phone suddenly started ringing in the middle of playing. As I went to answer it, I forgot to pause the game, and a creeper killed me. I quietly swore to myself as I answered the call. “Hello?” I asked irritably. However, when I heard the caller, I instantly forgot all of my troubles.

“Hello,” said the familiar voice of SkyDoesMinecraft.
