Chapter 5

The ball ricocheted off the black jackets of the students and settled on the fresh grass. Laughter and shouts carried the dodgeball game. Hanbyeol bounced on her feet, doing well despite the light in her eyes from the sky. Their class was currently out on the fields behind the school building.

Next to the girls' court, the boys watched intently as the ball constantly shot between Han Seojun and Lee Suho. Back and forth it went, getting stronger every time. With Seojun then getting out, he strolled across the field with light kicks at the dirt until a ball came to stop at his feet.

Jugyeong scurried over to pick it up, her shaking eyes focused on the ground. After promising to return his helmet, she turned away only to trip over her own feet. Seojun chuckled, shaking his head at the sight. The poor girl lay flat like a dead fish, burying her red cheeks in the grass.

Meanwhile, someone accidentally bumped into Hanbyeol and scratched her hand. When Suho noticed the spot of red on her, he immediately stalked to the nurse's office. Like a train stuck to its tracks, he stepped right over Jugyeong, only going straight to his destination.

People gasped. Hanbyeol couldn't figure out this boy – he was a puzzle, a bipolar puzzle. She almost forgot that they had a decent conversation.

"How freakin' rude," Hanbyeol cursed with a frown.

Jugyeong wasn't a rock to step over. Seeing the girl still on the floor, Hanbyeol and the others rushed to her, showering her with comfort.

"Are you okay?" the bright-eyed girl asked as she carefully helped her up.

Jugyeong nodded, brushing the grass off her top and white tracksuit pants. The girl just wanted to disappear again - a common occurrence this school year.

"Yeah, are you okay?" Seojun echoed. "Ignore Suho – he's a prick."

Hanbyeol couldn't tell if he was mocking her or not, but she was glad that they were on the same page. With this show of kindness, the boy was indeed trying to get into Hanbyeol's good books, very into her good books.

When Hanbyeol later returned to their classroom, she found a blue band-aid on her wooden desk. Other students filed in with a crescendo after their chaotic P.E. class, fanning themselves and drinking water. Looking around to find the culprit, everyone seemed to be in their own world, no one noticing Hanbyeol. Suho was not present though, and neither was Seojun.

"Why's this here? Did someone drop this or put it on the wrong table?" Hanbyeol muttered, picking up the band-aid to inspect it as if it was poisonous.

She couldn't imagine anyone putting it there for her; never in her life has somebody done something so nice. The pretty girl treatment was one that was very unfamiliar to her.

The scratch from sharp fingernails on her hand had only produced some blood the size of a ladybug, which was now dried. Although it could have looked worse from afar, there was no pain. Hanbyeol prepared to return the band-aid to the nurse's office when Sua gasped.

"Oh my god! Does someone have a crush on you?" the short-haired girl excitedly grabbed Hanbyeol's hands. "Who do you think it is? Do you know who?"

A laugh couldn't help but escape Hanbyeol's mouth as she shook her head, "No one has a crush on me."

"Stop trying to deny it - so many people have a crush on you. Do you think it was the cute band boy you said 'hi' to in the hallway yesterday?"

"No, Hyuk and I are just friends. I'm serious, no one has a crush on me," Hanbyeol blushed as she waved her hands in front of her with denial.

"You sure about that?" Han Seojun whispered over her shoulder as he suddenly appeared.

Now, the girl was redder than kimchi. His devilishly handsome smirk was too close for comfort, not that she was complaining. Sua's eyes darted between the two as she started to create a story in her mind.

"I'm sure!" Hanbyeol blurted before thrusting the band-aid into Seojun's hands and running off.

The boy chuckled as he played with the object in his hands, his small eyes sparkling. She was cute and quite funny to tease, reminding him of another girl who still owed him his helmet. At that thought, he went to go and find her.

* * * *

Classes rolled by and the students enjoyed their lunch at the cafeteria or out in the spring sunshine. As Hanbyeol walked down the stairs to their room with the other three girls, Sua complained about her boyfriend and how he forgot their anniversary. They consoled her, but Hanbyeol wished that she could experience the same worries.

When they reached their classroom, their eyes widened, and Sua tried to hide her humungous grin. Colourful balloons and hearts covered the entire space while the other students stood on the side as the audience. With the cheers pushing her, Sua followed the flower path to her boyfriend at the front of the room and the pink banner strung across the board. Despite the cheesiness, Hanbyeol dreamed that someone would care about her this much.

Taehoon, Sua's boyfriend, performed a little song, then said his sweet speech in his usual dramatic fashion. With blushing cheeks, Sua was very giddy and her hands fluttered around, purposefully unsure of what to do.

"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" the students chanted, causing the two to talk with their eyes.

As the couple prepared to deliver the command, a tall boy with glasses complained, "It's cringy. Do it in moderation!"

He stepped forward and launched the cake in his hands towards the two, who quickly sprung apart in alarm. They had seen it out the corner of their eyes when their lips were inches from each other's. Unfortunately, the delicious pile of white was headed right to the smiling girl behind them – Jugyeong. Time slowed down as it soared through the air, a round cake topped with a pretty pattern of icing happily flying without knowing its future.

Smack. Everyone was silent. Jugyeong's face looked as if she was enjoying a bubble bath with tons of foam, but she clearly wasn't enjoying it. The frozen girl gulped, her eyes blinking. Hanbyeol covered her mouth.

Then, the frenzied chaos started.

"Oh no!"

"I didn't tell you to throw it!"

"What to do? Let's wipe it first," Sua's eyebrows creased together with worry as she started to wipe Jugyeong's top with a tissue.

"Will a wet tissue be enough? It looks like you'll need to wash your face," another student panicked.

That couldn't happen. Scenarios ran through Jugyeong's head if she washed her face and her makeup was gone. What if they all realised she lied about her looks? What if they hated her and shunned her?

Everyone urged her to go wash her face, tugging her to the door. The girl's heart was beating as loud as them. So many students in every direction; they were a swarm of bees. Her eyes were flitting around as she tried to find an escape route.

"Stop!" Jugyeong shouted with her arms out. "Nobody touch me."

"Are you sure you're okay?" Hanbyeol cautiously asked.

Jugyeong nodded as she grabbed her makeup bag and darted off. There was a pause. Then Sua, Hanbyeol and Soojin ran after her, but the girl was a leopard charging through the yellow hallways. When Han Seojun was crouching on the ground to tie his shoelaces, Jugyeong stepped on his back as if he was a rock. His back dropped from the heavy weight.

"Do you have a death wish?" Seojun cursed.

After leaping over Seojun, Jugyeong had landed like a superhero and simply continued dashing off. Distant shouting grew louder. Suddenly, a hoard of teenagers came from round the corner. It was a stampede with dust shooting from their feet.

"Lim Jugyeong!" the girls cried out after her.

"Lim Jugyeong?" Han Seojun echoed, furrowing his eyebrows and wondering if she was alright.

As the line of students ran past the boy on the floor, Hanbyeol stopped, biting her lip. She held out a hopefully non-sweaty hand to Seojun, who gladly accepted it and stood up. He smoothed out his maroon blazer, although it had accentuated his rebel look.

"Are you alright?" she asked the brown-haired boy who had foolishly tied his shoelaces in the middle of a narrow corridor.

"I'm always fine," Seojun winked at her before flicking his hair with his head.

Giving a small chuckle, Hanbyeol left him and chased after her friends. Jugyeong had already made it to the bathrooms, but both were full of students; she had checked the female and male bathrooms. Her breathing sped up and the hallway seemed to be closing in on her.

"Jugyeong, let's hurry and wipe your face!" Sua shouted when they nearly reached the cake-faced girl.

The students crowded around her, trying to help her clean up. Arms stretched out from everywhere with tissues. She was suffocating, but she blocked people before they could get too close to her white face which was slowly dripping.

Catching up, Hanbyeol understood why Jugyeong was panicking as she remembered her obsession with makeup. The long-haired girl rested her hands on her knees for a second to catch her breath. Before she could step in, a tall and bold boy appeared.

Resembling a main character arriving late, Lee Suho marched over, his eyes sharp with purpose. He swung off his broad blazer in one swift motion and covered Jugyeong with it. In the spotlight, everyone was surprised at his unusual behaviour but they nearly melted at the gesture.

Jugyeong's eyebrows jumped when she felt the soft fabric on her head. Swallowing, she noticed how close they were. Suho's big hands were right by her face as they held her shield, and she felt warm.

When Jugyeong gave him the bag the other day, he finally discovered her secret that she begged him to keep – Jugyeong was the same bare-faced girl who often kept him nice company at the bookstore. Suho was a rude boy who didn't care much for annoying people. But he felt guilty for the way that he had treated this girl, who was already suffering.

The bodyguard guided Jugyeong away from everyone and they all parted like the red sea. The tongue-tied students just stared at the scene, even Seojun who had followed them, desperate to see the outcome. Watching Suho take her friend away, Hanbyeol realised that he wasn't so bad after all.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

What are you guys currently watching? I'm struggling to find something to watch. And now I'm sad cos I bought tickets for The KingDom's concert in December but it just got cancelled, and it was for my birthday too, cries.

Also, I kept this scene for Jugyeong, as it wouldn't work that well if I changed it to Hanbyeol, but some small things will change later.

Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed it~ Please vote and comment :)
