Chapter 4

On a dark and peaceful night, a boy in a black leather jacket roared through the streets on a sleek motorcycle. He swerved between cars, followed by a bunch of other loud bikes.

Jugyeong was unaware that she was approaching the wild beasts. Wiping her tears, she tried to forget the past hour and how she was hardly a metre away from her old bullies. The memories resurfaced – phones and snickering shoved in her face as she was pushed around and her present to her crush was poured over her.

The girl ran to an intersection. A bike screeched. Then it crashed.

Han Seojun groaned in pain. After trying to avoid Jugyeong, he was now lying on the ground next to his black motorbike. Luckily, he simply skidded and aimed for the floor.

"Excuse me, are you okay?" Jugyeong cried as she stumbled over to him.

The brown-haired boy pulled off his helmet, freezing when he saw the beautiful girl. As the gang of bikers charged over, Seojun threw his helmet to Jugyeong and ran off. A thrilling chase ensued in the streets, which turned into a fight.

At the sound of a siren, the crew dispersed, leaving Han Seojun on his own to fix his appearance.

"Are they gone?" Jugyeong snuck out of her hiding place where she found the fake siren.

Turning around, she bumped into Seojun, who stared down at her with his sharp eyes.

"What's with you?" he tilted his head at her.

The girl's heart was pounding as she searched for a way out. After a while, she finally managed to escape, the boy's black helmet still tucked under her arm in her haste. Seojun noticed the familiar school uniform of the cute girl.

"Saebom High School?" he muttered to himself, before his eyes widened at the fading figure. "Wait, my helmet!"

He was already planning on returning to school soon anyways to find that other girl. While he was busy the past few days such as getting things for his mum, he was ready for school now.

The very next day, the sun beamed down on the hundreds of students entering the school grounds, walking alongside the green hedges. A black motorbike shot through the crowds, launching gossip and awe as everyone jumped out of the way. The loud engine disappeared as the vehicle screeched to a halt at the front of the main building. When the helmet was taken off to reveal Han Seojun, two girls were equally shocked.

"He's from our school?" Jugyeong muttered to herself.

"What a show off," Hanbyeol scoffed, hiding her smile.

She wondered why this boy with ear piercings decided to turn up to school like that, and part of her hoped it was because of her. The way that he shook his shiny brown hair and observed his surroundings with his alluring eyes made her heart thump. His sharp jawline was still noticeable from her view, and he wore their maroon blazer over a white t-shirt.

"Han Seojun is back," their friends shook their heads. "Why's he here?"

"Han Seojun?" Hanbyeol echoed.

So that was his name.

In their skirts and blazers, Sua and Soojin looked unimpressed as they stood next to Hanbyeol and Jugyeong. They were a bit more than halfway up the hill, a fair distance away from Han Seojun. As students hiked past them, Sua faced the new girls and clapped her hands, as if she was preparing to tell a childhood story.

"Like how there are the Bermuda Triangle in the Atlantic and black holes in the universe, there are two charming boys at our school, whom if you fall for once, you can never exit and get out," Sua explained with animated hands. "The chic, cold beauty God Lee Suho, and the rough, wild horse God Seojun."

Hanbyeol shivered. It felt as if she was in a K-drama with pink filters and hearts coming from all the girls' eyes.

As the group of friends walked up to the school building, they approached Suho and Seojun, who were shooting daggers at each other. The tension between them was deafening. They were both built and strong, neither one backing down.

"What's with them? They don't get along well?" Jugyeong asked.

"They used to be best friends, but they somehow fell apart," Sua replied, her arms linked through the makeup faced girl. "When they meet, the atmosphere gets so cold."

Later in the classroom, Hanbyeol felt the ice between the two boys. She would have to keep herself from being too curious.

Since Seojun's seat was taken by Jugyeong, he took the only empty seat left in the back of the room, which he quickly made his bed. Spotting Hanbyeol, he recognised her from the convenience store by her bright eyes and beauty spot, although her long hair fell in neat waves and her face was smoother with the help of makeup.

Near the end of class, Hanbyeol noticed Suho staring at Seojun, whose head was still nestled in his arm on his desk. The girl wasn't that clueless; she often felt the boy next to her glance at her while they studied. She also noticed how Suho had to have his pens in a particular order and that he drank his red ginseng drink whenever he finished his page.

Today, however, she found that the rude boy's eyes were softer, and his shoulders were slightly drooping. Hanbyeol furrowed her eyebrows. Shaking the thought out of her head, she focused back on her maths homework as break time rolled around.

When Suho's gaze slowly travelled back to the front, he locked eyes with Jugyeong. The girl gave him a big wink. He shuddered.

Suho thought that he hadn't talked to this girl much, but unbeknownst to him, he had seen her at the comic book store a few nights. The only difference was that she was bare faced like a new person.

"Lee Suho, what are you thinking about?" Soojin asked the handsome boy as she stood next to his desk. "The English teacher wants you to come to the staff room really quickly. Come on."

As Suho wordlessly followed the other girl out, Jugyeong watched him go. She asked Sua if the two students were close, and Hanbyeol overheard her say that they were since their families had known each other for years. Were they perhaps dating? Not that she cared, but she couldn't believe such a nice person like Soojin could stand someone like Suho.

During lunch, the cafeteria filled with students digging into their yellow trays. It was a large space with windows along the wide wall. On the left end of the windows, steel benches served a variety of colourful dishes as teenagers lined up around it. Several long tables beckoned them to eat, including all year levels, which caused a mighty battle of voices on top of one another, but each group could well hear their own.

"Han Seojun is scary," Jugyeong commented from their seats, scooping up some rice.

"He's got that bad boy style," Sua shrugged before leaning closer. "There's a terrible rumour that he beat a student up until he was nearly half-alive, so that's why he took a break from school."

"I don't think he would do something like that," Hanbyeol said absentmindedly, playing with her egg roll with her chopsticks.

She thought back to the boy she saw in the karaoke room with a beautiful voice, and she couldn't imagine him beating anyone up for no reason.

"Why would you say that?" Sua asked.

Hanbyeol's face heated up but she was saved by the rational Soojin. "They say he took a break from school because of things going on at home."

When they were nearly finished eating, Jugyeong snuck over to Suho on the other table and gave him a red ginseng drink.

"What's this?" the boy glared at her.

"You like this," Jugyeong grinned before skipping away.

Suho wasn't sure what prompted her actions, but he wondered if Hanbyeol would like the drink. That hope was evaporated when Taehoon, the loud boy, stole the small bottle and thanked him.

As Suho then went to relax outside and listen to some rock music, he was once again haunted by Jugyeong. The girl came carrying a bag, and when she took his earphone out of his ear, he felt a chill run down his spine.

"Come to the rooftop," Jugyeong whispered to him, her breath travelling to his soul.

Reluctantly, he headed up to meet her, as that was the only way to make her stop bothering him. After lecturing her to quit being an attention seeker, she realised that he didn't recognise her as the bare-faced girl at the bookstore. Jugyeong grabbed the bag back from him while he was going down the stairs. Running off, she wondered what secret he said he would keep.

For their final class of the day, and Hanbyeol's favourite, she found herself in a group with Jugyeong, Suho and three other students. They discussed poets around the big table, and Hanbyeol enthusiastically shared her ideas. While Suho was focused on her, Jugyeong hung her head from the earlier embarrassment.

At the end of class, the students chatted as they gradually left, and Jugyeong was gone in a flash. Hanbyeol was packing up her things when she knocked her pen onto the floor. With a sigh, she bent down to pick it up, her hands brushing Suho's.

The handsome boy was crouching down like her, reaching his arm out for the pen as he met her eyes. Their faces were just a breath apart with the look of getting caught in the act – the act of falling in love and the other none the wiser. A lock of Hanbyeol's hair fell in front of her shoulder and she let it hang there. Now, with both of them touching it, the piece of stationery was the only thing that connected their skin.

"Thanks, but I got it," she snatched her pen and zipped it away in her pencil case once she stood up.

Suho nodded and followed suit, wracking his brain for a way to start a conversation. The seconds down there before felt like minutes, but he wanted it to last longer.

"I like your pen."

It was a plain, blue pen. The back of Suho's neck nearly started to sweat, but he kept his face blank as usual.

Hanbyeol blinked, clutching her books and pencil case to her chest. "Thanks... I like your pen too."

She wished she could erase what she just told him. It was saying 'you too' to a waiter when they tell you to enjoy your meal.

"But I haven't shown you mine yet." The words rolled naturally off Suho's tongue as he tilted his head with a slight frown.

"I'm sure it's good and nice to hold and lasts long," the dark-haired girl stammered before trailing off, not finding anymore words.

As general manners, she felt she had to return a compliment, but for some reason, her brain was lagging. So, she tried to name traits that she liked about her pen. Suho didn't mind though as he nodded. After they gathered their bags, they found themselves walking down the nearly empty hall side by side, their strides moving to the same beat.

"Did you hear the new song by 2U? I saw it the other day and it's really cool," Suho tried again.

"Yes!" Hanbyeol exclaimed before lowering her voice with blushing cheeks. "I've been listening to it on repeat."

They talked about their favourite bands all the way to the school gates at the bottom of the hill, where she excused herself to go home alone. Hanbyeol's eyes were now smiling, and she had let her hands move about while she fangirled over singers. Bidding farewell, Suho felt quite accomplished.
