CHAPTER 44: VANA ILUSION

"This is unacceptable!"

"Calm down Mamita--"

Swiveling around to glare at her daughter with the intense anger she's feeling, she pointed her finger at the girl, teeth clenched. "Billahil azeem Fatimah if you do not stop asking me to calm down zan bata miki rai!" She didn't get how the girl could say that to her.

Her son is there, lying on the bed because of his so called wife. Yet, the girl dares to ask her to calm down? She isn't even sure if her son will be alright. At the moment, only Allah knows his fate so how would she calm down.

Fatimah kept her lips sealed. She, in a way, understood how her mother felt. She had been dreading this since she found out about it yet it happened. Would she lose her brother? Will her Bhai leave her? Will she never see his eyes flicker open again and his lips curl into a smile as he teases her? Will he never get the chance to marry her off as he'd always wanted?

Those questions plagued her mind. And for a moment, she feared the worst.

Didi who sat one of the waiting chairs outside the emergency room exhaled loudly. "This is not the time to be angry. We just have to pray for Suhad's wellbeing" She said, raising her head to look at her co-wife.

For the first time since Mamita and Didi became co-wives, Mamita didn't reply to Malika's words with a comeback. As much as she hated it, she had to agree that the woman is right. They have to pray for Suhad's wellbeing because at the moment, that's all that matters.

So, she exhaled loudly and sat on the chair beside Didi, clenching her eyes as her lips curled open. She supplicated. She prayed to Allah that her son would be safe. She prayed to the point that she had tears streaming down her face.

Didi placed a hand on Mamita's shoulder. This made the woman look up slightly. "He'll survive this in shaa Allah. He'll be okay"

Mamita raised her head fully to stare at Didi. After a couple of seconds, she nodded, offering her a barely visible smile. "Jazakumullah Khair"

Didi, albeit, shocked by her co-wife's reaction and words, smiled back. It was the first time in her life that she and Sa'emah are having a conversation without throwing insults at each other. And she had to admit that it was...nice.

Mamita looked away, and continued to pray for her son's wellbeing.

"Doctor! How's my son" Mamita was quick to be on her feet the minute she spotted the doctor come out of the ER.

The doctor offered her, and the others a small smile. "Your son is stable now ranki dade"

Mamita nodded, sighing in relief.

"Can I speak to you in my office though? It's regarding his condition"

Mmaita nodded immediately, "Sure sure. Let's go" She allowed him to take the lead, while she followed quietly behind him along with Jakadiya who wanted to speak to the doctor first. She wants to make sure he won't say a thing to Mamita but she didn't get the chance to talk to him in private. That being said, she feared Mamita is about to find out the truth about her son's health.

"Please, sit, ranki dade" The doctor gestured to one of the chairs in his office once they were in there.

Mamita hastily sat, before the doctor did the same thing. On other occasions, she would've asked Jakadiya to sit too since the two are close but, she knows the woman will only get in her way.

"Ranki dade I have to be honest with you" The doctor started.

This made Mamita take in a sharp breath. She knows what he'll say but she fears she's not ready for it. The first time she heard about it, she felt as if her world would crash down.

This time around, she's sure it won't be as light as last time. Her son's condition might've gotten worse already.

Jakadiya swallowed hard. She thought of various ways to stop the doctor from speaking. They had a similar conversation before. So, she's sure she can shut him up before he does something they all wouldn't want.

Fortunately for her, the doctor glanced at her, and their eyes met. She narrowed her eyes at him slightly—silently letting him know to zip his mouth.

He moved his gaze back to Mamita, who the exchange between the two didn't go unnoticed by her, Yet, she decided to not say a word about it.

The doctor sighed lowly, "Your son might have to undergo surgery" He stated the dreadful words, eyes briefly flickering over to Jakadiya who has her eyes narrowed at slits at him.

Mamita gasped lowly. She could feel her breathing becoming heavier, and her panic setting in. She scratched her finger with her nail, drawing in blood in the process but she didn't care. She felt the pain, but the pain in her heart hurts the most. "Why?" She knew the answer, but she wanted him to say it first.

His eyes moved to Jakadiya's again for a brief second, then back to Mamita. "Ranki dade I believe it'll be best if you move him to a hospital in Abuja. His condition will be best treated there than here. The earlier you move him, the better"

Mamita blew out a shaky breath, then nodded. "Can we move him today?" It's still early in the morning, and if it's possible, she would want that.

The man nodded. "Yes. I'll make the necessary arrangements for him to be moved in two hours"

"Thank you doctor"

Mamita who had just ended her call with Mai Martaba sighed. Mai Martaba is in Abuja for a meeting when the incident happened, so she had to update him on everything that had happened so far. They came to an agreement that Suhad will be moved to Abuja. If his condition doesn't get better, they'd take him abroad to receive the best medical treatment possible.

Making her way over to Suhad's room, she spotted Daihaah and her husband coming out of the room. As the two looked up, their gazes fell on Suhad's mother who was approaching them. They decided to stop and greet her.

"Ina kwana Mamita"

"Good morning Mamita"

The two greeted simultaneously. Daihaah resisted the urge to roll her eyes at her husband. She wondered when her husband will start at least greeting the elders in Hausa. They had already established the fact that he can speak Hausa better than she can. However, that doesn't mean that he had loosened up on speaking it. The man speaks Arabic more than Hausa. She wonders what he has against Hausa.

"Alhamdullilah" Mamita offered them a small smile. That was all she could muster at the moment. Her gaze rested on Daihaah, "Khadijah, have you heard anything from Jannah"

Daihaah shook her head somberly. "No Mamita. Nothing yet"

Mamita parted her lips to say something, when she stopped midway as she spotted Jakadiya hastily walking towards them. Her brows drew in noting the look on the woman's face. By all account, she has news to deliver. "What is it?" Mamita asked, the minute the woman stood beside her.

Jakadiya heaved lowly, "It's about Jannah..."

"What about her?"

All three heads pivoted to stare at the women expectedly.

Sighing loudly, Jakadiya responded. "She left the country hours ago"

Mamita's brows drew in deeper, her lips curling into a deep frown as her eyes narrowed slightly. "Which country?" She asked.

Sarah hesitated, stopping in her tracks.

Jameel, noting the conflict in her stance turned around to look at her, pulling her towards him slightly with her intertwined hands. He looked at her eyes, his lips curled into a small frown, "You okay?"

Sarah stared at the door in front of them, then moved her gaze back to him. Inhaling lowly, she shook her head. "I'm not" She replied honestly.

Jameel offered her a small smile. Leaning close to her, he pecked for forehead. "You'll be fine. We will be fine, I promise" He pulled back, and flashed her a smile. "Okay?"

She blew out a shaky breath. But, nevertheless, nodded. "She won't hate me, right?"

He shook his head, "She won't"

She glanced at the door again, then nodded.

He took that as her cue, so he stepped forward and opened the door. Once he's in, he tugged her hand and carefully pulled her in. Together, they made their way inside the house where he's sure his mother is in. He had spoken to her earlier, and she had told him that she hasn't left for Abuja along with Mamita and the others. She would go the next day.

The minute they stepped into the living room, his gaze fell on Maleeka—his mother. Didi looked up when she heard footsteps, her lips stretching into a smile the minute she spotted her son. Her smile quickly turned into a frown when she noticed the figure hiding behind him. "Jameel?" She called out, "Who is that?"

Jameel turned his head to look at Sarah who remained rooted behind him. He then placed his hands on her shoulder and pulled her beside him, so his mother could see her. "Didi..." His gaze flickered to his mother, then back to Sarah. "...meet Sarah, my wife"

Didi chocked on air. "Wife?" She stared at the two with eyes wide as saucers. "Wife fa kace Jameel?"

Jameel nodded, "Yes Didi. She's my wife"

Didi slumped in the chair she's sitting on. "Both of you come in and sit. You have an explanation to do"

Kamal walked out with a suitcase in his hand. His team mates walked beside him, all dressed suavely casual. They are bespectacled their faces away from the glaring sun. From a distance, and up close, one couldn't tell that they're secret agents. They blended so well with the commuters. One would mistake them for a group of friends who came over for a vacation. They pulled up the look that good.

Kamal knew that there would be a car waiting for them outside. The higher ups that informed them of that. So, they simply headed out where they'd meet up whoever came to pick them up.

The minute they stepped foot outside the airport's main building, they spotted a man holding a placard that has "Mr. Abdullah" written in bold beside a tinted SUV. That was their driver.

As they made their way over to the car, Kamal's phone rung. So, he brought it out and swiped across the screen. "Saheeb" He spoke the minute he picked the call up.

"Kamal, I see you've arrived"

"Yes. Our flight just landed"

"So I was informed" Saheeb stayed silent for a bit, before he spoke. "Sorry about that, Dad has people keeping a close eye on me. That's why I couldn't make it to pick you up"

"It's okay, we can manage" Kamal said, arriving where their driver stood.

One of his team mates tried to open the front door when the driver stopped him. Kamal rose a brow at this. They all listened as the man informed them that the car is only for Kamal. The man then pointed at an identical car behind his, letting them know that they'll ride in that car.

"I sent someone else to pick you up. Hence the two cars" Saheeb explained. Though he wasn't there, he could tell from Kamal's silence that they had been informed of the car arrangements.

Kamal's team mates glanced at his for his orders. He simply nodded, silently asking them to take the other car, trusting Saheeb's decision—whatever it is. While the others left to the other car, the driver pulled open the back door for Kamal to get in, to which he did without a hesitation. He left the suitcase to the driver who took it from him. "Who did you--" Kamal stopped midway once his gaze fell on the other person in the car.

Judging from the sudden silence that came from Kamal's side, Saheeb knew that Kamal has met the person he's speaking of. So, he chuckled, "Have fun" He said before he ended the call.

Kamal, still stunned remained unable to move his gaze away from the person who sat cross legged beside him. "Bilkisu?" His tone held immense disbelief.

Bilkisu glanced at him, before she moved her gaze away. She picked up her bag which was between them, and shoved her hand into it. She then pulled out an envelope and handed it over to it.

He took it from her, his eyes still unable to tear away his gaze from her.

"Saheeb said to give you that. He said everything you'll need is in there" She stated simply, face void of any emotion.

"What are you doing here?" It was the only thing that could escape his lips. He had so many questions running through his head.

She finally turned around to face him, "I'm here to remind you that if you get yourself killed, I'll follow you to your grave and kill you again"

A grin broke over his face. Lord knows he missed her and her threats. "I don't want to die in your hands" He chuckled.

She smiled. "Then you better come back alive, and in one piece"

Maria wiped her hands, her brows furrowing when she heard the doorbell. For all she knew, she wasn't expecting any guests. She headed out of the kitchen, seeing her husband sitting on one of the sofas in the living room, "Do we have any guests coming today?"

He shook his head, "None that I know of"

"Weird" She muttered, "I'll go check" She made her way over to the door just in time the doorbell went off again. Without wasting another second, she held the door handle and twisted it, then pulled it back. Stepping away to stare at the person at the other end.

Maria felt her breath hitch.

Jannah stared at Maria, eyes widened slightly. "Mom?"
