CHAPTER 41: FAMILIA
"Hey, cut that correctly. You're making the sizes too big"
"Don't tell me you don't know how to hold a knife correctly. See the way you're holding it" Jannah sighed loudly, smacking her hand on her forehead as she watched Suhad trying to get a hold of the knife in his hand.
Daihaah stood beside her with arms folded over her torso, a spatula in her left hand. "Aish!" She muttered in annoyance as she watched Prince cut vegetables the size of her thumb. "You can cook, how is cutting vegetables so hard?" She glared at him.
Prince looked up, brows furrowed, "Cutting vegetables is hard. See, I mistakenly cut my thumb. I can barely move it"
Daihaah hummed, glaring at his thumb that he 'cut'.
Jannah however was at lost for words. She quietly watched Suhad raise the knife up above his head, then tilted his head to the side as he watched the fish in front of him—which his wife expected him to cut.
"You're cooking, not going for war. Why are you holding it like that?" She asked calmly. She had zero energy to argue with him further. They had been on this for twenty minutes now and so far, all the guys did was give them headache.
Suhad dropped his hand immediately after he said that. "But in medical school, we were told—"
"You attended a business school" Jannah cut him off, one of her brows raised slightly silently daring him to continue with his fake story.
Prince nodded, his eyes meeting his friends who was wordlessly asking him for help. He smiled, "But back in our secondary school, Suhad you remember right...."
Suhad nodded furiously, his smile mirroring that of Prince's.
"...During physics class we were told the classification of living things"
"You both attended commercial classes" It was Daihaah's turn to cut her husband, "And classification of living things was in biology"
Prince and Suhad shared a look, before the two nodded furiously.
Suhad chuckled, "Yes. I remember now. Just like Boyar's law was in Biology" He turned to Prince who nodded in agreement.
Prince snapped his fingers together, "That's right. And Gang Monera in Chemistry"
Jannah stared at her husband, then moved her gaze to Prince. She covered her face with her hands, shaking his furiously, "I can't deal with you two" She muttered; unable to hide the chuckle that erupted from her throat.
Daihaah sighed loudly, smacking her spatula on the kitchen counter. It made the three flinch from how loud it was. "Suhad, it's Boyle's law and it was in Chemistry. Carino, it's Kingdom Monera and that was in Biology..." She stated calmly—a bit too calmly. That was short-lived though because she smacked the spatula again, "You two never offered anything science related, most you make references with that?!"
The two men gulped. An angry Daihaah is not a good sight for anyone.
Jannah chuckled slightly when she noticed the fear in the men's eyes. She didn't blame them though, Daihaah looked ready to strangle them both. So, she decided to step in, "How about Daihaah and I handle this, while you two go ahead and interact with others or something?"
"Well, we don't want to leave you do all the work alone..." Prince started, he and his friend sharing a look again.
"But we can't turn back your offer like this. It will hurt you" Suhad finished.
"Yes" Prince nodded, "We also have a 100 percent we do not want to help you today policy, so we'll get going now"
That was all the two said before storming out. The sound of the front doors before banged shut reached the girl's ears. The two turned around and looked at each other, then laughed the next second.
"How did we end up marrying those goofballs?" Jannah asked, shaking her head as she stared at the unfinished work the two men left. She walked around the counter and start to cut the fish that Suhad left while Daihaah finished cutting the vegetables Prince was working on. She had to fix the ones that he cut already as they were not in an eatable size.
Daihaah chuckled, "I don't know honestly. It feels like it was just yesterday you showed me Prince's picture on Instagram"
"Mad" Jannah laughed, reminiscing how time flew. "It's been fine years already. Can you believe it's been that long?" The grin was there plastered on her face. It's funny how long the four came.
Daihaah grinned too, sighing in content as she stares at her friend. "I love seeing you like this, happy. You deserve it Jannah, you just need to give yourself the chance"
Jannah's hands stopped as her smile faltered for a bit, "I love him too much to do this to him"
"I know" Daihaah's grin turned into a sad smile, "Just remember what I said, I'll support you in whatever decision you make"
Jannah didn't say anything. However, the smile and the nod she offered her friend held all the answers Daihaah wanted.
Jannah knew everyone will oppose of her plan so having Daihaah's support was all she needed.
Together, the two finished up the dinner they were preparing. The two couple are having a dinner date in Suhad and Jannah's home in Gombe which was only a couple of feet away from the palace. The two needed their own space as guests had started arriving for the wedding. Apparently, Fatimah had been planning this for long, all she needed was the couple's approval and they were set to go.
They agreed to have the events in the weekend which was only three days away. It would start on Friday and end on Sunday. Frankly speaking, Jannah had no idea what the events were or what she would wear. Daihaah who had been working with Fatimah on it, had Layla pick up everything Jannah would need as they trusted her fashion skills the most.
After all, what more does Jannah wants apart from everything handpicked by the Layla Waziri?
Daihaah and Prince arrived earlier that day. Muhsin and Layla were set to arrive in two days along with Anee and Faruk who wouldn't miss the wedding for the world.
Jannah still finds it a bit creepy seeing Daihaah and Layla together. The twins are really identical. The only difference is in the character. Daihaah is more outgoing while Layla is more on the calm side. That along with the fact that one is a mother and the other is still pregnant is what differentiate them.
Speaking of children, Daihaah and Prince left Rahma with Mami, Prince's mother after much hesitance and tears from Daihaah. She was reluctant to leave her daughter, causing a scene about how the girl would grow up before she comes back which was ridiculous; considering they were only going to be there for a week.
Daihaah and her never-ending drama is something Jannah would miss dearly.
The two couple decided to have the dinner in the living room because it was easier to eat and chat that way. Jannah and Daihaah always talked about having dinner dates back when they were teenagers so the two were glad to finally have one.
Soon enough, laughter filled up the place. Anyone could see the happiness radiating off every one of them. For that minute, they kept aside every problem they had and focused on the good things in life. They wanted to be happy even if it was just for that night alone.
"Wait, I actually have something for you guys. Let me go and get it" Jannah said before she stood up and made her way over to their room. Opening the closet, she rummaged through her clothes, looking for the presents eh wrapped up for them. When she spotted it, she took it with her and headed back to the living room.
She handed it over to Daihaah before she sat beside her husband.
"What is this?" Daihaah asked, glancing at the wrapped up gift then to Jannah.
Jannah grinned, "Open it" She looked to look at her husband, who raised a brow, "Just wait, you'll see" She muttered to him as he too didn't know about the gift.
Daihaah unwrapped the gift hastily. She didn't have that much patience in her when it comes to gifts. When her gaze fell on the gift, her hand flew to cover her mouth, "Oh my God" She muttered, staring at it in awe.
Prince had a grin plastered on his face. He shook his head, chuckling as Daihaah gushed over the gift.
"I missed your anniversary so hope this makes up the late gift. I've always wanted to give it to you but well...things happened" Jannah felt content just by seeing the happiness radiating off the two. "It's not much but---"
"It's beautiful" Daihaah looked up, blinking back her tears. She turned it over for Suhad to see it.
"When was this taken?" He chuckled, "It looks familiar"
"Three years ago" Jannah replied, "Before she left for England, actually that was the day she told me that she was leaving. God knows how many times she begged me to delete the picture but see her gushing at it" She added, gesturing to the picture she had taken of Prince fixing Daihaah's veil three years ago. According to Daihaah back then, it looked like one of Big H's pictures or that of Bella Naija.
How time flies.
Daihaah looked up, playfully glaring at Jannah, "I didn't like him back then"
"But you yourself said—" Daihaah quickly covered Prince's mouth with her hand before he could utter the words that she will regret uttering her whole life.
Jannah laughed at this, throwing her head back making her lean on her husband.
"What did she say?" Suhad asked, whispering in Jannah's ear.
She turned to look at him, eyes widened slightly, "He never told you?"
"Jannah don't you dare..." Daihaah warned.
"She said he's handsome. What was that you said in Hausa seff?" Jannah inched away from Daihaah who looked like she was going to attack.
Suhad pulled her away from Daihaah who was planning on beating his wife to pulp.
"Allah me hallitta! Kai amma fa yanada kyau sosai" Prince who got the chance to escape her hand said, making everyone laugh except Daihaah whose cheeks were beetroot. However, due to her skin tone, they couldn't see it.
Daihaah groaned, hiding her face in between her palms as she shook her head furiously to get rid of the embarrassment.
"Dude she really said that?" Suhad couldn't stop laughing. It was simply too funny. He couldn't believe Daihaah actually said that. She looks like the type that would die before she compliments Aamir back then.
"She thought he couldn't understand Hausa" Jannah said, enjoying embarrassing her best friend.
Daihaah looked up, glaring at each and every one of them, "I hate you all" She said through gritted teeth, mustering up every stoic expression she could build up.
"Don't worry" Prince threw his arms around her shoulders, pulling her close to him, "I love you"
"Iyye" Jannah chuckled, leaning on her husband who leaned down and pecked her forehead. "See love"
"But like seriously, back then I thought you'd kill each other two weeks into your marriage" Suhad said, as he glanced at the two who sat opposite them.
"I know right. What's that Queen Dowager calls you? Tasmanian devils?" Jannah remembered Daihaah telling her something about the old hag as she used to call her. Though they're past those terms now, it was still funny to her.
Daihaah shook her head, rolling her eyes, "That old woman made me suffer"
"Halinku daya ai" Prince scoffed, "Do you remember the things you did when you first met her?"
"What did she do?" Jannah didn't know that part, so she was dying to hear what stunts Daihaah pulled in the early days of their marriage. Her marriage with Suhad is nothing like that of Daihaah and Prince, so hearing about it made her happy.
At least one of them got their happily ever after. She is content with that.
"Don't tell them" Daihaah looked up, narrowing her eyes at Prince but she knew there was no going back. He intended to tell them that's tory and nothing would stop him from doing do.
"So get this..." He started making Daihaah groan. He chuckles and ignored her, "Grandma is really strict on certain stuff, so everyone makes sure to abide by it. And Anee, Faruk and I know how stubborn Daihaah could be so we decided to play a little game on the two. We came up with the ridiculous rules that we had Anee tell Daihaah to follow knowing she wouldn't"
"Wait a damn minute!" Daihaah pushed his arm away and turned around to fully look at him, "Those rules were fake?"
Prince chuckled before he nodded, "Most of them were"
"And it took you a whole damn year to finally tell me?!"
Jannah and Suhad couldn't stop laughing.
"Tell us what happened afterwards please" Jannah said amidst of her laughter.
"She broke every single one of them. It was a struggle for us to keep straight faces throughout"
The three laughed at Daihaah's expense.
"But wait--" Suhad stopped them, "Did your grandmother know about the fake rules?"
Daihaah whipped her head to look at her husband, waiting for his response.
He glanced at Daihaah with a sly grin on his face before he shook his head, "No, the prank was on both of them. Anee even went to the extent of apologizing to her on Daihaah's behalf"
Laughter filled the room up.
Daihaah looked like she's about to explode. Prince looked at her them shrugged, his grin still in contact. She sighed and shook her head. "If I don't love you I would've killed you"
"I know" Prince replied, offering her a goofy grin.
Jannah sighed in her husband's arms. This felt right. Everything at the moment does. The three of them are her family, one she wouldn't trade for anything.
Her familia.
