CHAPTER 26: NERVES
My assistant ashraff_as this is for you!
"Your father?" Jannah asked just to make sure she heard him right. Admittedly, she's actually scared of meeting his father in fear that he's like Suhad's mother. Though Jannah tries to not think of the consequences of being Mamita's daughter in law, she can't help but wonder how it will be like now.
One thing's for sure, it won't end in Jannah's favor.
"Yes" Suhad nodded resting his hands on the counter. "He wants to see you before he leaves for Gombe though he'll be back next week for..." he trailed off.
Jannah didn't need him to finish it though she understood what it meant. He wants to see her before he leaves and return next week for Suhad's wedding with Bilkisu.
So, basically in a week from now she'll be sharing her husband.
Just great.
Jannah exhaled as she opened the first food warmer in sight. She had no energy to deal with jealousy and whatnot. At the moment she had so many issues to deal with she didn't want to add that issue to her problems, "We don't have to talk about that" she said dismissively as she looked at the food.
She heard him sigh.
Before he could say anything, she quickly spoke up, "Did you cook this?" she asked gesturing to the food warmer filled with chips and egg by the side.
He smiled; "Well..." he trailed off.
"You had someone cook it" she finished off the statement again making him shrug.
"I'm not the best cook okay! If you want me to poison you the very same day we get married then keep that aside and I'll cook for you" He offered making her smile slightly.
"No thank you. I'm good" she shook her head as she scooped the potato chips and placed it on the plate Suhad brought out for her. She placed egg just the amount she will like to eat on the plate too. A wide smile then lit up her face, "Baby" she squealed making Suhad look up immediately.
"Yes Jay" he answered, a goofy grin taking over his features.
She looked at him as if he'd grown two heads, the grin on her face turning into a frown, "Miyene kuma kake ce wani yes. I was not talking to you o! I was talking the love my life, Pepsi obviously" she gestured to the Pepsi in her hand as if it's the most obvious thing in the world.
The grin on Suhad's face fell turning into a scowl and if Jannah wasn't looking up closely then she wouldn't see the light tint of pink coating his cheeks. So Suhad blushes too!
"Are you blushing?" she laughed as she reached her hand out to touch his cheek but since they were sitting opposite each other, she couldn't reach him.
"Of course not" Suhad answered quickly as he stood up from the stool he was sitting on and headed towards the refrigerator.
"You so are! You were blushing, admit it" she chuckled as she placed a potato chip in her mouth and much on it ignoring her sulking husband. "Blush guy" she laughed when she voiced it out. She couldn't hold it in.
Suhad the blush guy. It has a nice ring to it doesn't it?
When she didn't hear anything from Suhad, she looked up to see him leaning on the refrigerator with a bottle of Pepsi in his hand while he watched her with a smile on his face. "Eres hermosa"(You're beautiful) he said making her bows furrow because she didn't understand what he said."No puedo evitar enamorame de ti una y otra vez"
Jannah wanted to say something since she didn't understand what he said. All she knew was what he said sounded like Italian or Spanish, probably the later since the guy studied in Spain. "You think you're cute don't you?" she glare at his playfully and pretended to not care about him.
Suhad shrugged, "No creo. Se que soy guapo (I don't think. I know I'm handsome)" he stated smugly but since Jannah doesn't understand Spanish, she groaned and this made him laugh.
However, she felt like her own fun too, "Dois-je vraiment te partager avec une autre femme?" She said more to herself as she watches the man she called her husband laugh. The sigh really was just masha Allah but after the words left her lips, his laughter died down and so did hers.
The guy managed to make her laugh after all the drama going on in her life. Admittedly, the thought hurts no matter how much she tries not to dwell on it. (Do I really have to share you with another woman?)
She didn't know whether Suhad heard her or it was just out of instinct, but she watched him with a gloomy expression as he walked towards her and pulled her in for a hug though she's sitting while he's standing. He rested his chin on her head while he run his hand on her shoulder to calm her down, "If I could do something so as not to marry her I swear I will in a heartbeat Jay" he muttered which only confirmed her thoughts that he understands French.
"I know. It's not your fault, I did ask you to marry her" she mumbled as she rested her head on his torso while she wrapped her hand over his. She liked being in his embrace, she loved his cologne.
The perfect combination of Crproil essence and incense with Agar wood and cedar wood essence. Definitely Yves Saint Laurent Oud.
She found it soothing.
"Speaking of which. We have to talk about that" he said making her groan slightly.
"Do we have to?" she said in a small voice. She really didn't want to relive that day.
"Jay, we have a lot to talk about but for now. Let's enjoy the peace okay? It's just you and I"
"Just you and I" she repeated. And though she feared what the future with behold, she has no sense of doubt that Suhad won't be there with her. She knows that he will be every step of the way. And that was all she could ever ask for.

"Are you scared?"
"Yes"
"Don't be, he loves you already" Suhad whispered in Jannah's ear as he leaned down and place a kiss on her temple. She gave his hand a small squeeze indicating that she is ready and after flashing her a smile, he pushed the door of the living room open and stepped in with his wife in tow-hand in hand like the newlywed couple they are.
Jannah's gaze fell on a man that looked to be either in his early sixties or late fifties and judging by his dress code she could easily tell that he's Suhad's father. The two looked alike, but not that much. One thing they had in common though was the warm smile both men had on their faces.
That seemed to ease her nerves slightly but still, she was tense.
The two said their salam which Mai Martaba and the two fadawa standing by the door answered. Jannah still didn't get the time to chck the house out but when she stepped into the living room, she didn't couldn't help but feel slightly intimidated because everything was topnotch in the house ranging from the expensive looking furniture to the dazzling chandelier that lit the whole room up.
She didn't want to be judged for checking the house openly like that though it's her house but still, she kept her head down and walked beside her husband.
The two sat on the Sarouk Persian rug a reasonable distance away from Mai Martaba. Suhad still didn't let go of Jannah's hand knowing if he did, the girl will be fiddling with it which will in no way help her nerves.
"Ina wuni Baba" the two said at the same time making the old man smile.
"Lafiya qalau. How are you both?"
"We're fine Alhamdullilah" Suhad replied smiling back at his father whom gave him a knowing smile.
Mai Martaba couldn't help but notice the way his son held his wife's hand protectively in his, that meant that he really did love her as much as he claimed, maybe more. He was just happy that he's the reason the two finally got together, "Jannatul Firdaus, how are you feeling?" he asked staring at his daughter in law who still hasn't raised her head to look at him.
Jannah smiled though he couldn't see it, "I'm much better now Alhamdulillah" she replied.
Suhad had to bite his lower lip to stop him from laughing. Who knew the girl could actually be this shy? She's acting as if she wasn't the one that was planning on how to kill him earlier.
Jannah noticed this though and so, she pinched his hand as hard as she could make his get his hand out of her grip. He turned and glared at her slightly but she just chuckled lowly hoping her father in law didn't notice that.
But the two did that right in front of him how can he not notice it? He found it to be funny though. He enjoyed seeing his son happy. "Masha Allah. Get well soon kinji? And if this son of mine isn't taking good care of you don't hesitate to tell me. I'm your father too and I'll always be on your side"
"In shaa Allah I will" she replied, this time more confident than the last time. Perhaps because it involved reporting Suhad which she would have fun doing. He should just wait and see.
Suhad stared at his father feigning horror, "Baba did you know what you just did? This girl will report me for everything fa"
For the first time Jannah looked up and glared at him, she pinched his arm that was close to her, "Shut up" she muttered.
"How can I shut up when you're pinching me in front of my own father?"
"You're a child" Jannah rolled her eyes shaking her head at his childishness.
"Baba you see ko?" Suhad points at his wife who looked like her eyes will fall from the glare she kept sending at him.
His father playfully glared at him too, "I didn't see anything other than you disturbing my daughter"
"Ikon Allah" Suhad looked between his father and his now laughing wife, "You've stole my father"
She scoffed, "How is my fault that he loves me more than you?"
"And you're confidentially saying it?"
"Do you want me to cry while saying it?" She retorted.
Mai Martaba just watched the two in wonders as they bickered like kids. However, he will be lying if he says that he wasn't happy seeing the two like that. After everything Jannah went through, he knew she needed every bit of distraction she could get and that was what Suhad was doing with the childish bickering an all.
After a while, Suhad left the two alone to answer call he received from work. He was hesitant to leave the two alone in case Jannah would feel nervous but it seemed like the girl had warmed up to Mai Martaba pretty quickly so he has nothing to worry about.
Once he was out, Jannah looked at her father in law and smiled.
Mai Martaba sighed, "Your father will be proud of you if he were here with us today" he said making her smile on her face drop. He didn't want to bring up the topic and change her mood but he had to talk about this.
Jannah looked down and fiddled with her fingers. Sincerely she had forgotten about all that for just the few minutes she was with these people since they got her mind off but now, everything just came crashing back.
Did she really think that lowly of her parents that she forgotten them that easily.
She really is a bad daughter.
"I didn't tell you that to make you feel bad but it is true Jannatul Firdaus. Your father always wanted to see this day but since he could not, he asked me to give this to you" Mai Martaba said as he pulled out an envelope from his pocket and handed it to his daughter in law whom collected it cautiously. "Just take a minute and read that. He left that for you. He said to let you know that everything will fall in place at the right time, for now, you just have to be patient okay?"
She nodded and sniffed back the tears that were threatening to fall.
"And about Suhad...give my son a chance please. I know you're going through a lot so I can't judge you if you want to take time but do give him a chance. It is times like this that you need people close to you to be with you through every step of the way. Suhad sacrificed a lot for the marriage, including his relationship with his mother. I'm not telling you this because I'm his father but because I'm both your father. I'm your father too and no father will like to see his daughter in pain so try and be happy Jannatul Firdaus. You deserve it"
She looked up and her teary eyes met that of her father in law's, "Thank you so much for everything" she said genuinely.
He smiled and just then Suhad walked back I making Jannah look down and wiped the tears so that he wouldn't see it but he did. He sat beside her just like he did earlier and placed his hand over her shoulder, "Jay, what happened?"
Before she could answer, Mai Martaba did knowing she'd have a hard time giving him a convincing answer, "I told her that I'd get her another husband if you disturb her and as you can see, she's crying out of happiness so you better not upset her else she'll have no problem leaving you and I'd have no problem helping her" he said making the two chuckle as Jnanah hid the letter.
Suhad knew that wasn't it but he couldn't say anything since it's father.
Mai Martaba checked the time on his wrist watch, "I have to leave now since I don't want to miss my flight" he said standing up and the two stood up along with him. "Jannatul Firdaus, don't forget what I said" he reminded her making her smile.
"In shaa Allah" she replied.
The two escorted him outside and waited till he left before they went back in. Jannah couldn't wait to read the content of the letter.
