CHAPTER 14: A KING
"Thank you for inviting me Mamitah"
Suhad watched the girl return the hug Mamitah gave her with a passive look on his face. Once she pulled out of the hug, the girl then turned to Suhad whom plastered a fake wide smile on his face.
"Did you two have a good time?" Mamitah asked looking between the two whom exchanged looks amongst themselves.
The girl nodded shyly looking down before raising her head to look at Suhad again, "Yes we did. Suhad was very caring" she replied making Mamitah nod whom had a big smile plastered on her face.
"Well, I'm glad you two got along. Bilkisu, join us for lunch" Mamitah said taking the girl's hand and dragging her to the dinning before Bilkisu can reject it.
The minute the two were out of sight the smile on Suhad's face fell and he released a sigh he didn't know he was holding. He licked his chapped lips unknowingly as his shoulder staggers. As the two disappeared into the dinning, he looked up and his gaze met that of Fatimah whom watched him with a look he knew very well. The same look she gives him every time this happens.
"Fatimah don't" he said as his younger sister walked down the stairs.
"Don't what? Tell you the truth?" she asked in a tone that she's mad at him but she didn't show it as much. She had always been good at hiding her emotions.
"Don't start that with me right now, I've had a long day" he ran his fingers through his head as he walked towards the couch and slumped on one.
"Who's daughter is this one this time?"
"A Minister"
Fatimah hummed glancing at the dining's direction before turning to her brother, "She seems nice" she commented crossing her hands over her torso.
"That's because she is nice" He muttered hiding his face in his palms.
"Huh" she said gaining his attention, "What was that?" she asked referring to what he said though she heard him.
"Nothing" he said not looking up.
"That's a first"
"What is?" he finally looked up to look at his sister whose face remained passive.
"You never said any of the other girl were nice" she stated as a matter of fact because they both know it's true.
"That's because they weren't" he replied leaning back on the couch and closing his eyes.
Fatimah hummed again, "So what makes her so different from them? She's Mamitah's choice after all"
"I don't know Fatimah okay? I don't know!" he raised his voice slightly but she didn't flinch because she was expecting him to react like this. He exhaled slowly trying to gain back his calm, "All I know is that she's nothing like them"
"So you're going to marry her?" she asked.
He kept quiet.
Her face morphed into that of disbelief, "Are you?" she didn't bother to hide the distaste and disgust in her tone. For some reason she doesn't believe that a girl that Mamitah chose can be different from the ones she had set up him up with. And all those other times, he only made rude remarks about them but for the first time he's actually trying to defend the girl.
What the hell is going on?! Fatimah thought.
"Well are you?" she asked for the third time.
"I don't know"
"You're an idiot you know that right" she said making his eyes shot up to look at her, she could see that he was slowly getting angry from the way his eyes narrowed and the veins on his forehead began to pop out. But, she didn't stop, "And what about Jannah huh? Are you just going to leave her?" If one doesn't know her, the person will say that Fatimah's about to cry from the way her voice sounded but she wasn't.
"I can't and will never leave her you of all people should know that!" he defended himself.
"Oh so it's okay for you to go around hugging other women while you care about her? Bhai do you even love her?" Before she did believe that her Bhai loved Jannah but now she's not sure anymore. When it comes to their mother she can never be too sure about him.
"Of course I love her!"
She shook her head, "No you don't. Because if you did you wouldn't go around with that...whore!"
"Okay watch your language and don't go around insulting people you don't know!" he didn't know he was defending her but perhaps it might've been the fact that Bilkisu is different from those other girls, he could tell because he's the one going out with them and not her. "Mamitah likes her..."
"So what? Mamitah liked all the other girls but guess what she got over it didn't she?!"
"Don't raise your voice at me, and don't try to act like you know everything because you don't. You know nothing"
Fatimah raised her hand to say something as her lips part but instead decided against it. She huffed lowly before shaking her head whilst still maintains eye contact with him. She waited to see if he'll elaborate or take back what he said but it never came. Instead, came a deafening silence and a stare off that none was willing to give up. She gulped turning around and walked away leaving him there alone with his thoughts.
She didn't want to stay back there and argue with him over something he clearly won't listen. If she didn't know any better then she'd say that he has been charmed but if he's being charmed by anything then it's his mother. She knew that, he knew that, they all knew so there was no point of trying to get him goes against her.
Suhad stayed in the living room alone until a maid came and told him that lunch has been served. He nodded and thanked her before heading to the dinning where the three sat waiting for him.
Mamitah left the head of the table for him as usual except when his father is around while she sat by his left leaving Bilkisu to sit by his right. Fatimah sat quietly beside Mamitah eating her food not paying attention to them as if they aren't even there.
Suhad sat down and Mamitah served him his food; again, as usual-he wasn't complaining though.
"I was just speaking with Bilkisu here when she told me that she finished her university this year" Mamitah said after a few minutes of silence. The only sound heard before she spoke up was the clank of spoons on plates.
"Yeah" Suhad nodded forcing a small smile on his face for his mother.
"She's also staying here for a week more, don't you think you two have enough time to go out again?" Mmaitah asked.
"I have work throughout"
"Nonsense!" Mamitah waved it off with a small laugh. She turned to Bilkisu, "He's always working, you should definitely think of what to do with his work after you get married. You can't have him working all the time right?"
"Yeah" Bilkisu laughed too, "But that's what makes him a hard working man"
"I guess so" Mamitah agreed grinning suddenly proud of how her son works. "So...does that mean I should start thinking of planning a wedding soon?" she asked the two looking at them with a hopeful smile on her face.
Suhad and Bilkisu looked at each other as Bilkisu smiled slightly, "It actually all depends on Suhad"
"Well..."Mmaitah turned to Suhad.
"Mamitah don't you think it's a little too early to start thinking about a wedding?" he asked in atone that's supposed to hint Mamitah that he doesn't plan on marrying the girl no matter how perfect she is. She just isn't the one that he loves.
"That's ridiculous! If..."
"I kind of agree with him" Bilkisu spoke up cutting Mamitah midway making Mamitah move her gaze from her son to her soon to be daughter in law.
"What?" Mamitah asked taken aback.
"I think he and I need to get to know each other better first. We can't just jump into things like this" She replied in a polite tone but she clearly meant what she said about needing to know each other first.
Mamitah exhaled slowly looking at the girl whom maintained eye contact with her. In all honestly she liked the girl's polite character but there was something about her that screams she can be assertive if she wants to and that she isn't the one to be messed with. Another reason she thinks the girl will be good for her son, "If you say so. At the end of the day, both your opinions matter"
Bilkisu nodded with a smile gracing her lips, "Thank you Mamitah" She then turned to Suhad who's looking at her with an expression she can't decipher and smiled at him making him smile back.
They finished their food while having small conversations about other topics apart from the potential wedding between the latest couple in town. After lunch, Bilkisu announced that she's leaving as her driver had came to pick her up already. So, she bid them farewell and walked outside with Suhad escorting her.
"Well I guess I'll see you soon?" She said as they stopped in front of her face.
"Yeah..."Suhad trailed off, "Bilkisu listen, you're nice and all but-"
"You like someone else" she finished his sentence for him. He looked at her with a shocked expression wondering how she knew that. She nodded, "Yeah I know. It wasn't that hard to tell"
Suhad didn't understand, "If you know then why did you still agree to go out with me?"
"Because..." she stepped closer to him, "I like you Alamin Suhad Sagir. I really do so I don't care if you like another girl"
"Why don't you care?" He knew women can be confusing but the more he socializes with them the more he believe that he's more complicated that he thought.
The breeze blew making a few tendrils from her bun fall slightly on her face. She pushed it back behind her ear as she replies, "Does it really matter? Your mom clearly likes me and since I'm here why not give it a chance?"
Suhad stepped back creating space between them, "You can't stop me from seeing her because I love her, with all my heart"
"And I'm not stopping you although I have to admit it, it hurts to hear you admit that" she smiled though it wasn't really that of happiness, "But I'm serious when I said I want us to get to know each other better first. I won't ask you to leave her, just give us a chance"
He didn't say anything.
"Think about it. Call me when you've made your decision" She flashed him one last smile before turning and entering the backseat of her car. He watched the car drove out of the parking lot before he headed back inside straight to his mother's room.
He knocked and waited for her to give him the go ahead before walking in and closing the door behind him. He met her sitting on her bed with a book in her hand; no doubt a cookbook.
"Mamitah can we talk?" he asked seeing that she hasn't looked up.
"It depends, what we are talking about" was her reply.
"It's about Bilkisu" he said finally gaining her attention.
She looked at him for minutes longer than necessary before asking him to sit down, "What about her?"
"Why do you want me to marry her Mamitah? Why not just let me choose the woman I want to marry myself?"
"And what? So that you'll leave me like your brother did?" she asked raising a brow through her glasses.
"That will never happen Mamitah you know that"
She hummed looking back at her book, "That's the exact same thing he said but look now, where is he?"
Suhad sighed, "You made him do it. You should've just let him marry her from the beginning"
Mamitah shrugged, "He's a Prince, I don't care who he marries anymore but you my son, I need to make sure that you marry a strong woman to rule by your side" she placed the book away and removed her glasses setting them on the book, "I can't let you ruin your life like he ruined his"
"Why?" his voice came out low but she heard him.
"Why?" she asked as if she didn't believe he asked her that, "Because you are a King"
"Not yet" he shook his head looking down.
"But you will be, and that means you have to be selfless. You're marrying a strong and reliable woman for the sake of your people because that's what a good king does. You give up everything for the sake of your people because they depend on you, they trust you so you have to go beyond any length to please them"
Suhad raised his head up and maintained eye contact with her, "Even if it's at the cost of my happiness?"
"Yes, even at the cost of your happiness because that's what a good king does. And you are a king"
~*~
It's a double update! Yay!
I can't believe it too because just today in the morning I had this bad writer's block.
Anyways you found out who the girl is. Those whom thought it wasn't Suhad or that she's his sister, you're wrong! That's too cliché.
I like the girl though.
So I guess that's it.
Love, Jannah.
