Chapter Thirteen
The next morning, Newt awoke with a goofy grin on his face. However, the smile soon evaporated as he realized this was the day he had to leave to go back home.
But was England really home? He had no family members there. All he had there was a lonely apartment with a suitcase full of beasts. The beasts weren't allowed in New York anymore, Seraphina Piquery had made that very clear, but Newt really didn't want to leave Tina.
Newt got dressed, stuffed his worn pairs of clothes into the suitcase, and tidied up the guest room. Taking one last look around, Newt grabbed his suitcase and hurried downstairs.
In the kitchen, Jacob handed Newt a breakfast pastry, which Newt gratefully ate. But even the warm, buttery goodness couldn't put a smile onto Newt's face.
As Newt wiped his hands with a napkin, Tina walked into the kitchen. She was wearing a beautiful floral dress under a soft blue overcoat. Her hat had the rose Newt had given her tucked into the band.
"You look very pretty," Newt breathed. "Thank you," Tina said, her cheeks turning as red as the rose. You could see Queenie struggling to keep in a squeal.
At last, it was time to go. Newt gave Queenie and Jacob a hug, thanking them for everything. "Promise you'll come soon?" Queenie asked, her eyes watering. "Of course," Newt replied. "Jacob, thank you so much. If it weren't for you stopping me, right now I'd be back in my apartment in England, depressed and wishing I had made things right with Tina. I owe you." "It's no problem, man," Jacob beamed.
With that, Newt and Tina walked to the nearest alleyway and disapparated.
Once at the station, Newt handed his ticket to the ticket master, who checked and gave Newt the okay.
The next part was Newt's least favorite. Saying goodbye to Tina. He had been dreading it.
"Well, I guess this is goodbye," Tina said, her voice wavering. "It's not goodbye, we'll see each other again, not too long."
Tina nodded. "Please write!" "Don't worry, I will," Newt assured her.
Newt picked up his suitcase. That farewell had seemed anti-climatic.
"I love you."
The words had burst out of Newt's mouth before he could control them, like birds being set free from a cage. He couldn't take them back now. He didn't want to, anyway.
"I love you too," Tina said, hugging him tightly.
For the two of them, fireworks seemed to explode in the air. To bystanders, they were just any other couple hugging. In reality, they were so much more.
