Chapter Fourteen

A few months later

It had been a while.

That was all Newt could think. He needed to visit Tina, but he was never a particularly wealthy person. He couldn't afford the ticket right now.

Newt finished writing a letter to Tina and went to upstairs to the attic, or owlery of his apartment building.

He chose his usual owl, a small brown one and tied the letter to his foot. "To Tina Goldstein," Newt said. The owl did not need to be told twice. Since Newt always used that same owl, he had grown used to delivering a lot of letters to New York.

As his owl hopped off the ledge and soared into the skies, a beautiful white, fluffy, official-looking owl came in with a letter. It dropped the letter into the post box and went over to the drinking bowl.

Newt rummaged through the box. Surprisingly, the letter that the official-looking owl had just dropped was addressed to him. Curious, Newt picked it up and examined it. What he saw nearly made him drop it.

It was from Hogwarts! The letter had the Hogwarts crest on it! But why would Hogwarts want to write to me? It's unusual for Hogwarts to write to any graduated students, especially me...

Hands trembling, Newt tore open the letter. As he read, his jaw slowly fell open in shock.

Dear Mr. Newton Scamander,

It is I, Professor Albus Dumbledore. How have you been lately? Very well, I presume. Congratulations on becoming an author! Your book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is quite amazing. I am still head of the Transfiguration department, however, I was doing a bit of research to find suitable textbooks for some other subjects. Our old books are becoming quite outdated.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would be an excellent choice for a Care of Magical Creatures textbook. It has a wide variety of information on loads of creatures, enough for a basic understanding of a first year or the more advanced knowledge of a seventh year.

I do hope that you'd let us use this brilliant resource of yours. If you write back and give me the okay, I'll contact your publishing company to get many more copies printed. You'll get most of the payment of course, minus the amount paid to the publishing company for the printing.

If all goes well, we'll send you your pay very shortly. Thank you for considering this option, and I hope you make the right choice for the education of future Hogwarts students.

Cordially,

Professor Albus Dumbledore
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Transfiguration Department

They wanted it! His book wasn't terrible! Professor Dumbledore wanted Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Newt certainly didn't need to think about his answer. He picked up a piece of parchment and quickly scribbled a thank-you note and giving the name of his publisher. Once he had finished, he called the white owl back over and tied the letter to his leg. "See you later, hopefully with a paycheck. Then I can buy tickets to visit Tina," Newt said, a dreamy look on his face.

For the next few days, Newt planned. He wasn't going to tell Tina that he was coming. It was going to be a surprise, and a great one at that.

At last, the white owl returned, with a package on its leg. Eagerly, Newt tore open the package and feasted his eyes. He had never seen so many galleons, sickles, and knuts in his life!

Newt put most of the money into a safe place, but put the rest into a cloth bag in his coat pocket. He packed some clothes and other important items neatly into his suitcase, and grabbed his other suitcase full of beasts.

He climbed into bed, jittery with excitement. Tomorrow, he would see Tina again!
