The south cross
Ashley and Scott entered in the small house they had built two years before in Tepotzlan. When they close the door behind them a small black cat walked towards them. Ashley knelt on the floor stretching her hands.
"If you hadn't brought all this stupid stuff we would have succeeded." Said Scott scornful.
"Ehi, it was your idea to go under the rain." She said turning and lifting the cat into her arms.
"My idea? I said there would have been more chance to spot them, not to carry your tools."
"Well, my tools come with me wherever I go." She said giving a kiss to Maxwell.
He hated that and she knew it. The fact she was giving attention to the cat and ignoring him. Scott came out with an angry expression hitting something invisible with the hands.
"I told you hundred times, it's not about me or you, it's about discovering life forms behind comprehension."
"You see Maxwell, your owner is talking nonsense all the time."
"Nonsense?" Scott replied without believing it.
"I'm talking to Maxwell." She said laughing.
Scott took off his wet jacket and hanged close to the door deciding not to talk to her anymore. He sat on his chair and switched on the computer to check the mails. He scratche hi head and then took a cup abandoned on the desk still filled with cold coffee. His eyes fell on a post it.
"Ashley?" He said turning his head.
She was putting some food into Maxwell bowl so she wasn't paying attention.
"Ashley?" He called her one more time.
This time she turned and made an expression confused and tired at the same time, looking like Alice in Wonderland.
"Look at this post it. Your yoga lesson started thirty minutes before."
"What?" She yelled back. "I need to go." She said taking the cup and drinking it. "Yuk, this coffee is cold."
She disappeared in the other room returning back changed and ready to her first class. Scott stood up and walked to the door.
"In this place people are always a little late. Nobody will notice your absence." He said taking the umbrella.
"Where are you going?" Asked the woman.
"Well, we are in this together. I go wherever you go."
She smiled back and in that moment they forgot about the previous argue and they kissed softly. He opened the door and pushed back Maxwell with a foot.
"We'll come back soon." He said.
The cat meowed without understanding and leaned his little head a bit.
Once they arrived to the gym Ashley waved a hello with her hand and a wide smile, while Scott sat in the back of the room with a little notebook and a pen. Everybody cheered when they finally saw their yoga teacher. Her charisma always anticipate her every move. She started the exercises and she put some music on. It was like they all fell in love with her and the passion she had for everything she was saying or doing. Scott looked at her with the corner of his eyes and Ashley did the same. They both smiled silently, inside. It was something they always did since the first time they meet, in the jungle scouting for something they had never found. Since that day they started a relationship that lasted until that day. There had been ups and downs, but eventually they ended up together.
When the lesson was over everybody slowly left the room and she packed her towel the music device. She turned towards Scott who rose up, scribbling while walking in her direction. She took the notebook and kissed him before he could even protest. When they went out they see the dark sky was opening and it wasn't raining.
"Let's go have something to eat. Or to drink. We should celebrate."
"Celebrate?" He asked curious.
"Don't you remember?" She asked crossing her arms.
"Really... no." He said scratching his head.
"Well..." She said walking closer. "We celebrate life on this beautiful planet. We should do it daily." She winked.
He smiled and hugged her.
"Let's go." He said putting an arm over her shoulders.
They entered in a place along the main street called los colorines and they took a table on the second floor close to the huge windows showing the view below. The city was calm, all the shops were closed and the only light that gave life to the streets was coming from the moon. Ashley ordered a salad of nopales while Scott took some rice. Few minutes later they were eating and drinking beer of the best labels of that place, filled up with mysteries and stories that never had the possibility to be heard.
After two more beers and a quantity of time impossible to tell two strange men entered in the restaurant and ordered something to eat. The kitchen was close, so Scott just stood up and wave at them.
"What are you doing?" Asked Ashley surprised.
"Let me be." He answered drunk. "Dos cervezas por mes amigos."
Once the two strangers came closer they noticed they were all wet and dirty of mud. They took two chairs and smiled a little. Once seated at the table the waiter came, he brought the beers and they started talking.
"This is Rob and I'm George."
"This is Ashley and I'm Scott."
They all took their glasses and cheered.
"May I ask you what are you doing here?"
Rob was opening his mouth to talk, but George very fast lifted his hand to impose the silence.
"We are scientists." Said George.
"Amazing. I'm a writer and she is a yoga teacher." Scott replied.
"I'm a photo reporter too." Added Ashley. "Where have you been?"
"We carry confidential information we can't share." Replied Rob.
After few shots of tequila Ashley was able to gently force their minds and understand what they're about to do. They were studying the frequencies from the mountains all around to find higher vibrations. Scott knew it wasn't something you could not understand with the technology, but he was really curious of the results.
"Well, the electromagnetic field in that area is very strong." Said Rob.
"... but we found more actually..." Interrupted George.
"What?" Asked Ashley moving her hand around her long hair and pulling them back.
"Well, a painting... inside a cave, close to..." Continued George.
"Close to none of your business." Finished Rob who remembered he didn't want to reveal his information.
Scott pulled his back forward and look the two men in the eyes.
"Come on, finish the story." He said.
Ashley put her left hand on his knee and smiled to the strangers.
"We won't never find that place anyway... don't you think so?" She said smiling.
George smiled back feeling drunk and attracted to the woman.
"Well, there is a rock... called el dado... It's north west from there."
The woman took the man's hand. Scott looked surprised at the two hands joined together. Rob was falling asleep on the table. George was totally controlled by the alcohol and he was not able to understand what he was doing.
"How far from the rock?" Ashley asked marking her pronunciation on the letter R.
"Well, it's seventy meters more or less."
"Thanks." Said Scott standing up.
Ashley did the same.
"Ehi wait, where are you going..." George asked almost falling from the chair.
"Nowhere..." Replied Ashley winking.
Few minutes later they were home. They quickly opened the door and prepared for the adventure. Maxwell looked at them curious without understanding what they were up to. He sat on the floor and start meowing to draw attention to himself effortlessly. Ashley lifted him from the floor and kissed him on the forehead.
"We won't come back late Maxwell." She said.
The cat meowed back. Scott threw a backpack into Ashley's hands who let the animal fall to grab it.
"Ehi, you could have hurt him." She protested.
"He'll be fine." Scott said approaching and kissing the woman who changed her mood right away.
Few minutes later they were ready, dressed and equipped with everything they needed. They went back in the forest close to the mountains. They walked silently to a house with the lights turned on that was quite creepy and then walked on a path very difficult to follow for the rocks in between and the plants growing everywhere. They lighted up both torches and followed the trail they were blazing.
"Do you think we are going in the right direction?" Asked Ashley.
"I don't know. All we got to do is reaching that rock." He said pointing the light towards a giant block of back stone, el dado.
After half an hour walking they both rested pushing their backs against a tree. She gave him water and he gave her some chocolate. The great rock was just in front of them. They looked up and they saw a light.
"What is it?" Asked Ashley alarmed.
Scott heard stories about that place, his heart started beating faster and his hands started getting wet.
"I don't know. Let's go and check." He said swallowing a lump.
They walking up without the lights following that strange creature before them. Scott knew that the population was a mix between species of this earth and outer space. That could have been the encounter of all his life. He was afraid but he knew that Ashley was beside him and nothing could have gone wrong. Finally they saw the figure and they realized it was a woman. She was quite tall with long hair and a katana by her side.
"Who is she?" Ashley asked. " One of them or one of us?"
She outsmarted him, she was too clever and she understood.
"I don't know." He replied. "We should try not to scare her. Let's follow."
They walked in the dark for an amount of time impossible to tell and then the woman stopped and opened a map. She took out the sword and cut the plant growing all over showing the entrance of a cave.
"The cave..." Said Scott lifting his head from her hideout.
"Who's there?" Said the woman pointing the katana in the dark.
Ashley and Scott came out with their hands up.
"It's the two of us."
"Who are you?"
"Tourists." She replied fast.
"In this moment of the night?" The Japanese woman replied.
"Well, I think we are searching the same thing." Said Scott slowly moving his arms down.
"Are you working for the government?" Asked the girl moving closer the katana.
"No!" They yelled at the same time.
"I trust you." She said and put back the katana.
"We simply heard a story..." Said Ashley.
"Two scientists?" The Japanese woman asked. "It's many days I'm hunting them down."
"What?" Scott asked.
"My name is Kohana, by the way."
They told their names and then shook hands.
"We are here for the paintings." Said Ashley.
There was no need of other words. The three of them entered in the dark cave. They pointed their lamps on the walls and what they saw left them speechless. The paintings showed humans living with extraterrestrial beings and do the daily activities. A spot showed a man too tall to be human with a long head who showed the sky to some children and then spaceships were drawn in the top part of the rock. On the bottom there were pyramids, plants and animals. Kohana kneeled down and opened a box that carried in her backpack and showed a dogu statue of the Japanese empire. She started crying and then she pointed to her index where a being identical to the clay figure was drawn on the stone. In the representation he sat between a circle of people and talking about the sky as shown by the arm lifted up.
Suddenly they all turned and lighted up the end of the cave. They looked at each other, they felt something in the back. They went checking and all they saw was a black geometric stone that was like pulsing and they felt like there was an heartbeat inside.
"Did you see something moving?" Ashley asked.
"The thing wasn't moving." Kohana replied. "We were."
Scott looked at the woman perplexed. They all went out the cave and found themselves on a sandy beach. They couldn't believe their eyes.
"Where are we?" The man asked.
Kohana simply pointed at the sky with her katana. The stars in the sky changed completely. Four of them were brighter then the rest of them all, the cross of the south.
