14- That Time I Flew
The ground shook so much that James and I both fell to the ground and struggled to grab a tree trunk so that we weren't flung into the air. I'd heard of things like this that used to happen on earth before they invented Anti-E. Earthquakes used to happen all the time with our crumbling environnement, but about a century before I was born someone invented a way to keep the earth's crust from shifting.
I didn't know the science too well, just that it had worked and I'd never experienced anything like that. James looked bewildered, his wild black hair flying into the air each time the ground shook. The rock creature didn't look scared, it didn't look anything really.
It was comically bouncing up and down like a child in a trampoline, except for it was sitting and it didn't look amused in the slightest. Smile, I thought sarcastically. The creature seemed to come to like and bared sharp white teeth. My eyes opened widely, there was no way that was purely a coincidence.
"Hold still," James screamed. He added, "This might freak you out a bit."
Suddenly he was rising into the air, abandoning his tree trunk and floating freely upwards. Suddenly I was too, my feet lifting until the tree was the only thing keeping me grounded. I closed my eyes and let go, feeling the adrenaline pulse through my veins.
"YOU SAID YOU'D LEVITATED THINGS, NOT PEOPLE!" I screamed, looking at the forest grow further away.
"I may have under exaggerated," he smiled calmly, taking my hand and pulling me closer. "How did you think I built the treehouse?" I could feel his breath on my ear and squinched my eyes closed again. I couldn't look down, I could not do that.
"You have a microconverter," I pointed out.
"That thing ran out of juice a long time ago, gas isn't exactly common around here." It wasn't commun around earth either, only the ridiculously rich could afford it. Most people had started using other fuels. I wondered if James was one of the people that lived in a giant house with his own pool and everything. We shifted and I yelped.
"I'm going to die," I whispered.
"No, not as long as I'm here." He pulled me closer and hugged me close. "It's alright, I won't drop you."
I looked at the ground again, realizing that we were much higher than I'd expected. The rock creature looked like a tiny block of pink mixed into the trees. I looked at James again and he smiled calmly, he was so calm about everything. It made me feel like I had a false sense of security.
"Why is the ground shaking like that?" I pointed at the shivering trees with a sigh. James turned in the air suddenly, causing my stomach to twist suddenly. He looked out and pointed to the camp of crabs. There was a bright light flashing and the shaking seemed to be strongest there.
"I think it's best if we go to the bunker," he simply responded. I started to protest but he shushed me and moved again in the air. It made me nauseous and I was seriously worried about throwing up. He held me to his chest and suddenly we were flying forward. I guessed that he'd navigated the forest like this hundreds of times.
"Why didn't you show me this earlier?" I whispered into his ear.
"It's best to ease into the craziness of this planet," he said seriously. "You know, finding out that I'm actually a superhero tends to freak the girls around here out."
"Very funny," I gripped his shoulder with my nails in fear.
"That hurts, you're talons are digging into my shoulder."
"Yes well, maybe next time I'll be more prepared," I muttered sarcastically. James chuckled and slowed slightly, lowering us to the ground and setting me down clumsily. We were outside of his bunker I realized. He held the door open and smirked.
"That was a first," he laughed. I rolled my eyes and entered the small compound, even far away the ground still made my feet vibrate with movement. As James closed the door I wondered how long it would be until I saw the outside world again.
