steady character development.
I'm gonna be honest, character development is hard to master. You either end up with a totally static character who is the same person at the beginning of the novel as they are at the end or you end up with a character who did a complete 180 in like two days!
For example, let's take Steve Harrington. He was an arsehole in season one, but you could see flashes of his true personality. It's not like he complteley changed, as someone going from playboy to mom in just a year is literally impossible.
If you want to make a bad character turn good, try to keep their good heart showing even when they are supposed to be bad. Example, when Steve came back to help Nancy even though she just pointed a gun to his head. He had a good central personality, but we didn't see it until season two. Remember these things take time!
But, if you're going good to bad, my friend, it is going to be difficult. There has to be a reason for character development, and if that reason isn't strong enough, it's going to look half assed.
So remember, every now and then, drop hints of the character's true intentions, but don't reveal until the end.
